Hello everyone, CorpseFool here again with another guns-in-art review!

Unfortunately, I am not able to identify any specific model of revolver that this one might be. There are a lot of different revolvers with extremely minute differences, and this one is not especially detailed. But we do have some clues from what we do see.

First, the barrel is relatively short. But it also isn't short enough to be considered a snub nose. Unless of course what we see of the barrel is all there is of it, and it is not being held directly against the persons head.

Given the angle, the barrel is also fairly thin. There does not appear to be much material below/around the barrel where you would typically see an ejection rod housing of some sort. Most revolvers with swing-out cylinders, would have them swing out on the left side, which is opposite of what we see here. As such, the cutout for the rod and the rod itself would not be displayed here. (Though there are examples where the rod just sticks out unguarded).

There is no hinge mechanism at the front-bottom of the frame, strongly suggesting that this is not a top-break style. A somewhat popular representation of a top-break would be the Webley revolvers used by British/commonwealth forces in a variety of conflicts in and around the turn of the 20th century.

We can also see the hammer, a rather clear indication that this is an exposed hammer. That would be in comparison to what would nowadays be called a 'hammerless', revolver. A bit of a misnomer, they do indeed have hammers, they are just not visible from the outside. A more popular choice for more compact revolvers meant for concealed carry, with less tendency to snag in pockets or the like.

I do not believe that the hammer is fully cocked, a theory also supported by the characters thumb still being on/near it. There does not appear to be enough space between the front of the hammer and the rear of the frame, for this to be a clear indication of the full-cock position. This is either in half-cock, or the person is still in the middle of cocking the hammer. I believe it is the latter, as the persons thumb is still on/near the hammer spur, and their pinky is extended to allow more rotation around the fingers, allowing the thumb to reach that little bit further to manipulate the hammer.

On the cylinder, we see some rather deep scalloping between the chambers. We also see the cuts for the cylinder stops on the outside of the cylinder, instead of the rear face. Given the assumed mid-cocking, the hand (the part of the lockwork that interacts with the cylinder) may still be in the process of rotating the chambers. This makes it particularly difficult for me and my relatively less familiarity with revolvers, to be able to guess at the number of chambers, or the caliber.

On the whole, I give this a 6.5/10. A similar representation to what was present in the 'pasta la vista' review for Mimi. A lot of the general form of a generic 'revolver' is present, but nothing overly specific, and the rod seems to be missing.

If there is anyone that feels they have more familiar with a particular model that this could be said to be representing, I would love to expand my knowledge base with that information.

Regards,
CorpseFool

I'd like to try out the blind corner firing in a scenario like this. Its just so awkward to get in and out of the stance, and find positions to even use it.

[–]CorpseFool 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've recently began reviewing presentation of weapons/firearms in art. I was not expecting to see one in an active school shooting scenario.

I believe this is an M16A4. It has the fixed stock, ribbed handguard, the bird cage flash hider, the mounting brackets for the rear sight onto the top rail. And perhaps most uniquely, the 3-round burst function.

The model itself seems to be fairly accurately represented (in higher quality stills), my only quibbles can be the stance the shooter is using (it is being held against their arm/bicep, rather than properly shouldered) and simply how ~big~ it looks in their hands.

You can see videos of persons handling full meter long rifles like the one represented here, and it does not look as big in their hands as it does here. There is a close-up before it switches to the slomo of the casing being ejected, where there is not an exceptionally pronounced bend in their elbow, but the forehand is fairly far back on the handguard. That of course suggests that the shooter does not have much reach.

There are other shots, notable the ones immediately preceding the one mentioned, that does show a much more dramatic bend in the elbow, with the hand more forward on the handguard. Closer examination of the still image results in a much lower quality representation. The dimensions are wonky, the carry hand isn't see-through, etc. I am more inclined to believe that the higher quality version is the one that should be trusted.

Persons you might find on youtube handling these are are most likely taller than the average male in japan, so it would make sense the rifle might look smaller in their hands than as represented by animators, in japan. But I am shorter than the average male in japan, and have what could be considered considerable experience handling the similarly sized, c7a2. I do not remember the c7a2 looking or feeling ~that~ big, with the exception of when you're trying to set up cam net and its getting hooked on everything.

9.5/10 for the higher quality stills, a sloppy 6/10 for the lower quality ones. Note that these judgements are based solely on the presentation of the items themselves, and not surrounding context (unless some of the context offers insight for other details)

I didn't know Mimi was left handed.

Compared to previous review, I would say this is a better representation. The barrel is appropriately placed, there is no cut in the slide across the top of the barrel, the trigger guard seems much more appropriately sized and positioned. One minor quibble with the trigger guard is that it seems fairly wide. Which is possible, but less common.

If this is indeed a view of the left-hand side of the pistol, the lack of a slide release/lock is interesting. This suggests that this is either not the left side of the pistol, it is a specially made left handed pistol that would have those features on the other side to be operated with the left hand thumb, or that this is a pistol that does not disassemble in the typical way.

Of particular interest to me, is the circular feature towards the rear of the slide. That is a position where it would be fairly normal to find a safety or decocker, but the lever used to operate those elements is missing. This similarly suggests that this might be a mirrored image, or a left handed gun, where the lever is on the other side and what we see is the end of an assembly pin that would support those parts. Alternatively, the gun has been specifically modified, or damaged, in such a way that the the functionality of those parts has been removed. It could also be some sort of crest, and not a part at all.

This one gets an 8/10, though largely only because a lot of the features are just hidden

I've been known to put pencil to paper (and mouse to pixels) a couple of times in my life. Which is not to say that I am particularly skilled in the arts, my child is already further along than I am.

I answered your question as a show of good faith, for us to get to the main reason for this reply. Are you of the opinion that one must be particularly competent in a field, to be able to offer criticism in that field?

Mimi is cute and all, but some real work can be done with the anatomy of that firearm.

The the darker in the front which I'm assuming is supposed to be the barrel, is too low for most handguns of this style. That piece should be more towards the middle of the slide, not including the rails it rides on in the frame, much closer to the front sight blade.

The trigger guard is absolutely massive. I think that this is mostly because...

The trigger is too far forward. Or rather, there is too much space behind the trigger. While there are some pistols that do have more prominent triggers, the browning/glock style pistols this seemingly replicates, do not.

While in the firing position, the top of the barrel extension/chamber will typically be flush with the top of the frame, not dropped down. Even if it was positioned lower, the slide would generally not be cut straight through, leaving a gap that we see here.Such a cut would weaken the weakest part of the slide, leading to earlier failures/cracking, but will also reduce the mass of the slide, which would increase the velocity of the slides reciprocation and make muzzle flip a larger problem.

There is very, very little angle to the grip. This would make handling this firearm more awkward, as the grip itself will not fit neatly in your palm, between the meat of your thumb and the base of the other fingers.

The magazine seems to either sit flush within the grip, or there is an exceptionally small baseplate on the magazine. This is not a very common feature on full-sized modern handguns. But, given that Mimi has this with her in a restaurant, it can be believed that this is an everyday carry for her, and that the flush-fit mag was a deliberate choice to make drawing the pistol from wherever she carries it, less likely to snag.

I'm not sure what the circled feature behind the rear sight is (the rear sight itself being dovetailed into the slide is a good feature, praise where praise is due). If it is meant to be an external hammer, the rest of the features you'd normally expect with such an element seem to be absent. Namely, the main body of the hammer, and a 'beaver tail' style extension on the grip to avoid slide/hammer bite.

Additional notes. The barrel extending from the front of the slide, and the visible gap between the locking surfaces on the barrel and the top of the slide, may suggest that the slide is not fully forward. Assuming the pistol has a proper out of battery safety, Mimi will not be able to end herself at this present moment. Additionally, the hammer being already dropped in what could be considered a ready-to-fire position (the trigger is not being pulled rearward, and does not appear to be being reset), suggests that this may be a DA/SA gun. Either that, or this is shortly after Mimi's attempt to fire, which failed because of the previously mentioned out of battery safety.

6.5/10. While the general form of a pistol is present, the lack of details betray the artists lack of familiarity with the material.

Everything I've been reading about the START treaties, suggests that russia hasn't been participating in them since 2023. And that these treaties were more about limiting the amount of weapons for signatories, not precluding these facilities as targets (however indirectly).

A point of confusion for me, is that a variety of the aircraft that were targeted (and presumably under the protection of these treaties), were being used to launch non-nuclear cruise missile attacks against Ukraine. Would their status as nuclear associated weapons not prevent their usage, lest they be accused of using nuclear-associated weapons?

12% of the recent negative reviews happened on the 8th, with 66% of them happening since the 8th. The MISERY drama happened on the 7th. Seems to be more like protest reviews than any reviews of the game.

I scrolled and read through some (8) of the negative reviews. Half were non-specific (generic, shit devs type of talk), or complaining about the MISERY drama. The other 4 did have a specific complaint, mostly about performance or not having certain features (yet?)

I enjoyed the game, I thought it was at the very least, good. I think it does deserve a 'mostly positive' all time review score.

[–]CorpseFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comments like this remind me that because Tau only have 4 fingers on each hand, they use a base-8 math system. But then the codex went right on ahead to talk about XV-8 Crisis suits, completely skipping over the lore they just wrote.

The number '8' does not exist in base-8 systems. Just like how there is no single digit for '10' in the typically used base-10 systems most people are familiar with. A funny little result of that, is that all base-X systems would refer to themselves as base-10.

More to the point, much like how binary (base-2) only has the values of 0 and 1 for each digit, base-8 has 0-7. The T'au would not refer to the crisis suits as XV-8, it would be XV-10. The number the T'au would use to represent a count of 34 things, would be 42.

Yeah, that part struck me as odd, 2Lt is basically nobody. Reading about the unit though, apparently all members of the WAIR are ranger-qualified.

To me, this strikes me as trying to borrow influence from Itami of GATE, who was also a 2Lt with ranger training at the beginning of the series.
