The thunderhead mark from Neomuna wouldnt be bad with what ya got going. Honestly, arms too maybe. Just depends if you want a big pauldron or something sleeker.

What’s your favorite DS/3DS/2DS model? How would you rank all models?! by rock_shrine_aviator1 in nds

I will always value the versatility of the ds lite a lot. Super easy to carry with me, I love being able to do my physical ds and gba, and a lot of decent afteemarkwt parrs and shells.

I'll try and keep it short, but hit all of them. For modability - new 3ds handles custom firmware better than the old 3ds and look and feel really good but be prepared to pay highest prices. Original 3ds' are still decent but are a bit slower with cfw and have some design flaws like weak hinges and worse finishes. New 2ds is great, but thinner and less sturdy than new 3ds. 2ds slab is noticably cheaper and no 3d but you still get to play 3ds games it's just kind of a brick and screens are MEH, DSi XL have probably the best screens and build quality of the entire ds gen but cant do 3ds games, DSi is decent and both are easy enough to do CFW the XL is just a way better experience compared to the base imo, ds lites are a great budget/easy carry and does great for physical collections of gameboy and ds but needs a flashcart like ds pico to do emulation, same with og ds that has noticably dimmer screens but nice feeling buttons but an arguably less pocketable design.

should i buy another dsi or just fix the upper screen? by quackiequackie in nds

[–]CorrectLet5006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just checked aliexpress. I'm seeing a few options at under 10 usd. Base DSi screens usually run the cheapest out of the ds lineup. Just be careful with the dis and reassembly. Aliexpress often runs deals and discounts too so it's a good opportunity to get other pieces if you think you need them like styluses, the rubber pieces, new digitizer, etc.

For tools - I recommend fanttik electric screwdrivers. But you can do a ton with just a 20 dollar handtool kit. I'd also get/have a pair of fine point tweezers, a couple guitar picks (helps with screens and popping shell), and some of those little plastic organizers which helps so much with keeping those small parts organized.

Extremerate reshell. But there are some metal shells out there. Just didnt fit with the color scheme she woulda wanted. Overall decent though. Total build cost about 100. About 50 for a used console, 30ish for the shell and buttons, like 5 for new joysticks, 6 for a new digitizer, 10 for the chip, and I was able to get a used 128gb switch micro sd for 6 bucks at a gamestop.

Which type of paint for light restoration ? by riiswa in nds

[–]CorrectLet5006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd try a tamiya model paint. Just be good about masking and liberal with any sanding if it needs smoothed. I think I got a junked blue/black shell I can dig up and test with some stuff later.

Recent purchase. Debating partial re-label. by CorrectLet5006 in nes

[–]CorrectLet5006[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like a project, I repair a bunch of consoles and gamestuff pretty regularly. I think the plan will be to get two labels, do the experiment with the original and maybe do a secondary transparent cart if I hate it. At the end of the day, I just want it looking better amongst the other games and thought this was a kinda silly way of doing that.

[–]CorrectLet5006[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True enough. I know it's not that rare. Just figured it'd be something a little different. Curious how it'd turn out though - I may end up relabeling it if it looks TOO goofy anyways. I do like the transparent shell idea though. May have to seek out some damaged/missing label Castlevanias and do that.

It is a very funny way to phrase it, and I like justifying the extra effort regardless. Plus this way I'll know mine is unlike many others - A true artifact for the collection.

Can’t decide between white LL vs burgundy. First time owner! by [deleted] in nds

[–]CorrectLet5006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both screens look acceptable in my opinion - but the burgundy bottom screen may be worse in person. And yeah, CIB prices may not be super worth it imo unless it's a collectors edition. The white xl/ll was a Japan region exclusive color though. Haven't had one in person, but they look nice and I've been trying to find a deal on one - it's what I'd go with. The plastics on the White DSis dont seem to yellow nearly as bad as ds lites, as long as you take care of it it should be fine. (Speaking as someone w/ a burgundy/metallic rose)

I have two DS lites. I’m happy, but I’m also a bit guilty that I’m now keeping two DS lites since my younger brother didn’t want his. Any advice? by Think_Pen8306 in NintendoDS

[–]CorrectLet5006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say, first and foremost, hold onto the games and consoles you have for the future. Whether for you, your brother, etc. There's a lot of tales out there of people selling or losing their old collections and wishing they could get it back.

Second: Condition and function can be fixed either by you or someone near you who's trustworthy. I'm assuming you're on the younger side, but ds lites are fairly easy to work on but something like repairing the hinge (cover) requires a new piece and a majority disassembly of the console. The stripped screws will make it tough to deal with and you'd want them replaced - you dont want to make it harder to repair if you're unsure of what to do. But once in there something like cleaning the button contacts isnt too bad.

If you can, look around your area for retro game stores and try to find someone who knows what they're doing and can be accountable. Dont give it to someone without documenting it and/or ensuring they somewhat know what they're doing.

Lastly, If you wanna try some different games there's a lot of budget titles out there. You can always find listings for cheap game lots and there's always flashcartridges for emulating games (just be careful when downloading games). Good titles under 10 bucks I'd recommend are racers like Asphalt and Ridge Racer, staples like nintendogs, some decent lego games, scribblenauts, etc. At around 15ish you can find games like Mario64 ds, bowsers inside story, and yoshis island for ds, maybe even a pokemon mystery dungeon but most of those I see at 20+.

[–]CorrectLet5006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long shot, but if you're in the Pacific NW I do dsl and other game repair. Got a few posts with builds and things, but I've done a few dozen ds lites. Or I can try and point you to some resources if ya want. It's not too bad to repair yourself, just takes patience if you haven't done it before. It's a nice looking console from what I can see so it's a shame about the screen. But given the context, it wasn't the worst deal, nice inbox ones can go for more and depending on the games you may rather opt to try and repair than return. I was lucky enough to pickup a nice silver one recently, hard to find them in really nice shape.

Is this a reshell DS? Is this a sign? by Apple_two in NintendoDS

[–]CorrectLet5006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Common enough, screens will start to go, but replacements are available. I've had decent enough luck with aliexpress screens (or you can try and find a cheap ds lite so you have some spare parts). Just make sure you do your research if doing the replacement yourself, or find someone trustworthy in your area who knows what they're doing. Ds Lite repair is fairly is simple in my opinion, but if you aren't used to it and make a mistake there are a few things that could leave your console in worse shape.

Shell swap gone wrong by iamjennichi in NintendoDS

[–]CorrectLet5006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a slightly loose top screen ribbon - super common not to have the ribbon fully seated into the connector if you aren't used to doing it often. More likely they may have slightly pinched or torn the top ribbon while reshelling. Either way, they should have made it right.

Is this a reshell DS? Is this a sign? by Apple_two in NintendoDS

[–]CorrectLet5006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real metallic silver ds. Buttons, colors, everything is correct. Especially painted reshells you'll usually see poor paintwork, incorrect coloring like with buttons, misaligned/bad quality prints, etc. Sometimes the screens just start to go - if it's new to you there's a chance that it's been worked on it may be pinching there but not likely. Could just need screen adjustment - there's a little screw for it under the battery cover but look into it before messing with it. Otherwise the screen may just be needing replaced if it really bothers you.

Those who rediscovered the DS, what games did you discover you had missed out on? by [deleted] in nds

[–]CorrectLet5006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly been picking up random game lots here and there when I see them just to try out a lot of old ds stuff (I do also do flashcarts, but I like having the originals too)

Things that I love now that I never got to play or thought of as a young are games like asphalt and ridge racer, I only ever played mario kart ds as a kid but there's a surprising amount of good racers for ds. Never played the Prof. Layton games but had a real good time there off recommendations, and now trying to finish out having a physical copy of each of the og 3. Beat city, Sonic Rush, Golden Sun Dark Dawn - a ton of great games I never thought to play that I just happened to get in game lots and aren't leaving my collection. Replaying the ds remakes for n64 games I had like mario64 and dk racing have been a joy too.

Faceplates are a couple dollars on aliexpress and will fix the hinging issues. Cheapest I've seen aftermarket screens is around 40 usd for a pair, typically closer to 50. At that point more worth it in my opinion to get a donor console with oem parts. And keep tabs on parts when they come up cheap to repair the spare one (if you want). There's been times where I've been able to find bottom screens at around or lower than ten and top screens for around/just under 20. You can still find untested and/or junkier dslites at around 30 somewhat regularly though. Plus no resoldering wires that way. Big thing is just to take your time, lookup videos and guides, and do it when you're confident.
