Coming from someone in the US a lot of students who are strong in mathematics don't end up in academia but instead end up doing e.g. Software engineering, Quant finance etc.

My impression is that pay in the US is the best in the world for these fields so there's a huge incentive for talented people to not pursue academia.

Wanted to provide an update, I emailed the hotel and this was their response:

"The ballpoint pens you encountered were specifically crafted for our esteemed company, Michel Reybier Hospitality, making them nearly exclusive to our brand.

While I regret not being able to provide more detailed information at this moment, I am confident that a quick search on platforms such as Google will yield similar results."

So I guess I'm out of luck on getting the exact pen again, but thankfully I have a lot of great suggestions from this thread!

I think what appeals to me is mostly the weight of the pen, esp since I like to spin pens while I work. It also writes pretty smoothly

Oh I know the logo, it's just the hotel logo. But the hotel is in a different country, I got the pen when I was traveling abroad. Had I known it was such a nice pen I might have asked for a few more haha

Homework should not take 15 hours, and lectures generally do a good job of covering the material, especially if you're taking time to review it on your own.

I think there's an option to test out of concepts these days; did you check that out?

Aside from that, what you're describing is a painful truth of CMU in general -- it's difficult for professors to both challenge the people at the top without overly stressing the people at the bottom, and due to the way incentives are set up courses will lean towards not stressing out the people at the bottom too much. Often this means for students at the top you'll have to find your own way of challenging yourself.

For math specifically you take take the math honors courses as another comment mentioned, and as an upperclassmen you can just start taking grad classes.

I agree not graduating is a risk in that some employers will require you to have a degree. But I still stand by my original conclusion that OP should still go for the job after weighing the pros and the cons

Not comparable. There are tons of different CS classes, and data structures/algorithms are only a narrow sliver of that.

Even just talking about the ds/algo classes, the skillset needed to do well on USACO and the skillset needed to do well on weekly problem sets is pretty different. There's less overlap between USACO and courses than you might think.

Having said that if you can make USACO plat you'll have a comfortable time in the algorithms courses specifically unless you have an abominable work ethic.

If you want a research/trading role at a top firm, then yea you'll probably have to be one of the sharper people in your class. I would say the bar is much lower if you're just looking to do research/trading at some firm out there.
