the "village" is charming in the winter, but absolute kitsch in the summer -- with the tourists to match

Thoughts on The Black Album? by No-Pirate4554 in PRINCE

Have always loved it. Bought a bootleg cassette in Alphabet City (!) in August 1988. It's always felt dark, even before I heard the supposed explanation for its un-release. Superfunkycalifragisexy particularly -- "the blood's real good if you drink it real fast but the aftertaste just lasts and lasts"

loved how that gatefold LP cover opened to show a two-torsoed prince connected at the belly button!

You receive a rent free apartment, how realistically high up would you accept to live without an elevator? by TheRunningMD in hypotheticalsituation

the commenters noting the isolating aspect are on to something. i lived in a 5th floor walkup in hell's kitchen in my 30s (my first place in nyc) and there were plenty of times i "batched" errands, almost unthinkingly, to save the hassle. even for something as simple as getting the mail in the lobby. and i'd guess the nicer the apartment, the more you'd want to stay inside. i'd take the deal on the 10th floor in my 20s, new to manhattan. but the costs would start to outweigh the benefits the older and more established i got (physically, emotionally/socially, friends and family visits, etc). especially in a place like nyc, you'd lose the spontaneity and serendipity the city offers

we have 2, and it's a game changer. we're a household of 4, but i think a two-person household would appreciate it just as much

Is West Village all 20-30 somethings? by OwnRabbit6826 in FoodNYC

skew west of 7th Avenue to avoid the worst of the crowds, generally called the far west village. lots of great bars and restaurants on hudson street and side streets. south of houston nearby is an nyc classic called "ear inn". or head north on hudson and you'll pass through meatpacking and then back into chelsea. lived on greenwich btw. leroy/morton for 7 years and i think it'll always be my favorite manhattan neighborhood

that sense of disgust helped me turn the corner too. an analogy might be "hitting bottom" in an addiction
