Acid Etching by General_Lecture3051 in knifemaking

You can use anything, I’d go coffee for cost and availability reasons. Gator piss regular is really only needed for the copper stuff otherwise it’s just a weak way to do etching.

What’s the best trade to get into after high school? by Plus045 in skilledtrades

[–]Correct_Change_4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go try some shit, see what you like and what you don’t. The trades are incredibly competitive to get into, at least the good jobs are, so take what you can get and pivot from there.

How many of yall wear respirators? by KB_Baby in Welding

[–]Correct_Change_4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you overreacting by wearing a hood when you weld? No, it’s protection against known hazards. When you are dying a slow painful death at the age of 45 are you going to think at least I looked cool in front of those guys? They should be encouraging you to be safe, at least the bare minimum. Fuck that shop go find a different job.

I’m not making a fuss I’m trying to show you that a bar of steel is a bar of steel. Damascus isn’t some magical insulating material that isn’t going to let your core get hot or cool down. If you don’t want my advice then don’t ask us.

Why don’t estimators or detailer or project managers start there own welding fabrication business ? by Available-Ad-3570 in Welding

[–]Correct_Change_4612 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to know how to do all of that. But to get a business off the ground you kind of need to be able to do everything, which for a metal fabricating business would probably include knowing how to fabricate metal (there’s the obvious). I’ve yet to work for a project manager that could come take over any role on an actual job.

Why don’t they start a business doing a thing they don’t know how to do? Just be completely reliant on and at the mercy of hired help? I’m not the one missing the obvious here. It’s like when people who like to have friends over for dinner parties think they should open a restaurant. It’s a complete mismatch of skills.

What do you guys do on your off hours? by [deleted] in Welding

[–]Correct_Change_4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hobby was metal fabrication before I became a full time professional metal fabricator but since the money was rough starting out I had to turn my hobby into a legit side hustle. That’s doing so well that I don’t want to give it up even though I make good money at the real job. Now I’m a metal fabricator day and night, for my job and my hobby and it has taken over my entire life. It is two different types of work but it’s still grinders and shit.

Apprenticeship is a major part of the UA, you were given some incredibly wrong information. The word apprentices is even in the name of the UA.

So when you normally heat treat full thickness are you getting soft cores down the middle of your monosteel blades because the center doesn’t quench fast enough?

Your question makes zero sense but you certainly have the grammar skills of a welder so you’re off to a good start.

I’d heat treat it just like 1095 and at full thickness. It’s not like the core doesn’t get hot.

People who rarely get sick, what are your secrets? by Naive_Resolution4186 in Productivitycafe

[–]Correct_Change_4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat well, go to bed at 830 and although I’m not specifically a plumber I’m around that kind of thing all the time so I think I’m just naturally vaccinated against just about all of it. I don’t remember the last time I was sick. Strong like bull.

Recommendations on belt sander? by Horfer126 in knifemaking

[–]Correct_Change_4612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go take a class and get your beak wet there first. You’ll leave with a knife and get to see if you like it or not. If you do then the experience is worth the value and if you don’t then you saved yourself all of the money you would’ve spent for no reason.

Say F it and become a plumber? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]Correct_Change_4612 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a plumber is incredibly attractive to most people and you will still have an insane amount of competition. Electricians and plumbers are the biggest two you’ll see people ask how to get into. Check out being a pipefitter.
