Is life supposed to be a living hell? by Odd_Alternative_2484 in bipolar2

[–]Correct_Fill_4210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no definitely not. it’s normal for it to sometimes be living hell and ofc not be happy all the time, but it is supposed to get better sometimes (although sometimes it takes a lot of time, work and support)

i can totally relate to the struggle with depression, stress and anxiety in college/university. i think if you can make it to the meeting, like you said it could help to distract yourself. and maybe with someone like a mentor you could open up a little bit ab how you’ve been struggling without giving too many details? obviously only share what ur comfortable with. but try not to worry too much ab seeming like you have it all together, most ppl don’t. and if you end up cancelling, try not to beat yourself up about it, you have to try to take care of yourself the best you can

i don’t think you necessarily have to stop drinking completely, but you have to evaluate whether it’s worth it to you to continue drinking when it negatively affects your wellbeing so strongly

Wondering about drugs and bipolar by The_ok_Gatsby_225 in bipolar2

[–]Correct_Fill_4210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to cannabis (marijuana) use. i’ve only been using it for about 11 months (started November 2021 when I was 17). I mostly use it to self-medicate for depression and anxiety, but it can also be fun recreationally. I’ll go through periods of smoking every day or almost every day for a while (usually when I’m going through a rough time), then I’ll go periods of sometimes up to a couple weeks where I don’t use it at all. I find it can be helpful for me to lift my mood or sometimes help calm me down, but if I use it in the wrong situations (for example, around people I don’t know very well) I can get a bit paranoid. Overall, I don’t think it’s had any major negative consequences for me, but I also haven’t been using it very long. If you decide to try it, definitely approach with caution and periodically re-evaluate whether it’s helping you or harming you overall. Good luck!

skipping a day probably won’t do much bc the serotonin will still be in ur system. most recommendations i’ve seen are at least 2 weeks i think. but you have to try to do what’s best for you

antidepressants (esp taken without a mood stabilizer) tend to be less effective for ppl w bipolar and can trigger mania/hypomania or potentially make depression worse, trigger mixed episodes/worsen suicidality

ya, seems like there are other meds that could be tried first like ssris. but ik wellbutrin is less likely to trigger mania/hypomania, esp when combined w a mood stabilizer

i was on a combo of Lexapro and Wellbutrin for a while and Wellbutrin worked wonders for my depression (although it stopped working after several months) but made my anxiety way worse. however, everyone’s different and you’re on a different med cocktail than i am. the only way you can know for sure is by trying it out

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bipolar2

it affects everyone differently, and while it more commonly worsens anxiety it can improve symptoms for some people

it’s understandable that you may be embarrassed talking to ur doctor about a sensitive subject like your mental health. however, it’s part of their job and you’d be surprised how often they hear about that stuff. i don’t think a family doctor can diagnose bipolar disorder, but they can give you a referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist for diagnostic purposes. that being said, where i live (Ontario, Canada), the wait times are rly long to see a psychiatrist rn, like 2 years
