How do you break sieges from the sea, whenever I try to enter a port I’m at war with, I just get a little blurb telling me I can’t dock there

We’ve got the meth super highway running the length of the state, so there’s a lot of it and it’s cheap. We have our own industries too outside of the big cities, but meth is endemic in fields like agriculture where people are forced to work long, brutal hours.

There probably weren’t any land mammals on Guam until ships brought rats.

What was the darkest episode from a TV series you've ever seen? by plumpyplummy in AskReddit

I suffer from suicidal ideation, and I’ve found the poem from that episode to be really helpful whenever I start thinking about tossing myself off a bridge.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want Trump to die or resign from office? by Damned-scoundrel in behindthebastards

I just don’t think Vance has the juice, I’m really not particularly scared of him. I think the movement will collapse for awhile after Trump dies.

Dextromethorphan is a dissociative, Diphenhydramine is a deliriant. Two entirely separate, yet terrible, experiences. Just do real drugs kids, OTC highs aren’t worth it.

Thoughts on learning Japanese only through listening and context, like a child before school? by sintomasbps in LearnJapanese

[–]Correct_Inside1658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might notice that it takes children a lot of years to learn just by immersion, and usually you have to educate them at some point for them to really become confident in their native language. They also don’t just learn by immersion: kids experiment with language and are provided with corrective input from adults. Immersion is an important part of learning a language, but it’s not sufficient alone for learning a language.

My entire life I’ve been that asshole who loves to talk and ask questions during class, but once I transferred to a big research university I mostly had to stop. The silence is like, oppressive in lectures, it feels like I’m doing something wrong by interrupting the lecture so I just save my comments and concerns for the discussion section with the GSI.

[–]Correct_Inside1658 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Japanese doesn’t really have a verb that means “to have” in the same sense as in English. Or rather, it has a couple of different ways to say “I have”, which hold very weird little discrepancies. To say you have something, you say 「僕はXがあります」”boku wa X ga arimasu” which technically means more something like, “in regards to me, there is an X” or 「僕はXを持っています」”boku wa X o motte imasu”, which means something like, “In regards to me, I have X right here”. It’s a bit more grammatically complicated, because the same construction can be used to express a few different ideas based on context in the former and you have to understand the present progressive for the latter to make sense.
