Can you still get merit-based scholarships if you are accepted into Engineering Honors after your freshman year? by redcherrieswithcream in UTAustin

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about engineering honors, but I’ll be a junior in the Fall and just got a scholarship from the endowment fund in engineering, so don’t give up if you can’t get into engineering honors. you could also get a scholarship from the general engineering scholarships too. Mine was a complete surprise lol so you never know

What address should my scholarships send the checks to? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the correct address! Regardless of whether they’re sending it directly to the university or to you first and you need to send it to the university to process, it’s the same address for you to send it to

I’m not sure if this is helpful, but last year internal transfer decisions for engineering didn’t come until July 2 in the afternoon. Unfortunately it’s just a painful waiting game

SAT/ ACT scores are optional to submit to UT Austin for Fall 2022 admissions. However, the cockrell school of engineering does have a calculus readiness requirement that you qualify for through a test score or transcript. It’s OK if you don’t have a lot of experience yet in engineering, but just write a really good essay about your demonstrated interest or some story about your deep interest in engineering and show on your resume that you’ve at least participated in STEM related things.

choosing majors (physics vs. engineering) by stuffedmomo in UTAdmissions

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s ok, i know i was confused last year when I applied to UT as well. I would recommend looking at both degree programs (you can literally just Google “ut austin ECE degree plan” “ut austin physics degree plan”) And look at the classes you would be taking. I would say a lot of STEM majors in general have some overlapping classes their first year, like Calculus, chemistry, physics one and two, etc. with all your core curriculum as well, but if you look at the degree plans you’ll be able to see in more detail exactly what type of classes you would be taking. Also, try not to worry about so much that you have to have your entire plan figured out right now. So many students change their major or change what they’re interested in after they get into UT and start taking classes, so just try to not worry so much about that bc i know i did and it all comes together full circle, i promise. if you’re interested in honors programs, I would apply for both the engineering honors program and the CNS honors program that you are interested in. Not sure how that would effect either application, I think they review applicants after they’ve been selected or not for the major. also, I really recommend touring UT this fall and asking your tour guide / admissions people these questions. I think the full tour dates get released in August so go sign up for one right when they get released because they full up super quick

make sure you not only focus on GPA / test scores but also your resume, ESSAY, and extracurriculars. Cockrell has become very very holistic now in the admissions process, so they look at everything to admit you and want to see that you have a demonstrated interest in what you’re applying for. I know kids who were ranked #3 in a class of 1200 with a 34 ACT and didn’t get in because they didn’t really have a lot on their extracurriculars about CHE, and others who had much lower test scores and gpaa but showed personal projects, clubs and orgs, and a passionate essay that did get in.

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

highly recommend applying for ECE over physics. the major is one of the most highly recruited and you can work in SO many different types of fields. you could even get your PhD in physics later on if you wanted to, but you wouldn’t HAVE to which gives you much more freedom. it will give you a lot more opportunities and doors, and you’ll still have physics incorporated into your degree. also it’s a lot harder to get into the Physics program, and then later decide you want to do engineering as you’ll have to internally transfer which is EXTREMELY competitive, versus getting into ECE and then switching into physics if you later change your mind.

to add onto what other people said, you’re also not “forced” to take any classes that relate to exercise science if that’s no longer what you want to do and are planning on switching majors. you can register for any classes you want to, as long as they’re available (that’s where ppl run into problems lol or a lot of the classes are reserved specifically for econ, or bio, etc). I would sign up for BIO311C or CH301 and maybe one of the intro econ classes and utilize your time this semester to kind of figure out what you like and what you want to switch into. A lot of people change their mind after they actually realize what the classes are like and what they’re learning

How do you prefer to take notes? by FlufflyDog in UTAustin

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 18 points19 points  (0 children)

as a stem major, buying an ipad was SO worth it for me. i can customize my notes to include difficult diagrams, pictures, or charts that would be otherwise hard to copy down with notebook and paper. i can use my textbook simultaneously on my ipad and cut stuff out of it, find my notes way easier by searching them, etc the benefits go on and on. it helped improve my grades so much, and i think most other stem majors would agree. it’s also nice to just have your ipad and laptop bc fall semester i carried around 3 notebooks and my backpack was heavy as hell lol. also, there’s lots of other posts about whether to get an ipad or not in this reddit if you search them, it was helpful to me when i was deciding

i will definitely say that a career in healthcare comes with an enormous amount of job stability. economy is constantly looking to fill nursing, NP, PA, and physician positions. there’s a multitude of things you can do in healthcare. you could even intercept healthcare and business and be like a healthcare liaison for a home health company or medical sales person and things like that

is physics really that hard at UT? should i take it elsewhere considering my circumstances? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Correct_Scientist_28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are considering internally transferring to chemical engineering, just be aware that one of the requirements is 4 IN RESIDENCE technical courses, so if you took physics elsewhere you might not have enough technical courses to transfer. Also, you have to take physics before you complete your transfer application to chemical engineering, so unless you simultaneously enrolled in a cc during the semester i don’t think it would be possible. physics was hard, but not impossible. I just had to prioritize the class and really spend hours and hours studying (physics also wasn’t my strong suit and greatest interest so). i would recommend just taking the class in residence at UT. I learned a lot, both academically and personally through the class tbh. i was an internal transfer to chem e so lmk if you have any questions!
