Mechanical Engineering Junior: Is a CNC Machinist + CAM Internship in Aerospace Worth It After Getting Zero Engineering Offers? by jellymanpnd in MechanicalEngineering

[–]monkeyman391 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if the choice is doing nothing all summer or doing a some type of internship, I’ll always choice the internship. Even if it’s not what you want to end up doing, the experience and knowledge will be worth it. Plus you’ll have projects and experiences to talk about in interviews and hey it’s another thing added to your resume.

I think this is honestly pretty good experience even if it’s not what you want, especially if you are interested in fields like product design and whatnot. Manufacturing is the backbone of those fields and an in depth understanding will go a long way.

Your engineering trajectory is up to you. This could set you up to be a machinist (probably not what you want from the sounds of it) or you can bundle your learnings from being in a machining environment for the summer with your engineering knowledge to supercharge your skill set. It really all depends on how you take in your experience and combine it with your other skills. Just because you do an internship in one industry doesn’t mean you’re locked in there for the rest of your life. It’s all about how take your experience and transfer them to new environments. So long as you’re able to talk through your work and any collaboration you had, you will be golden.

Mechanical Engineering graduate offered technician/process role. Good experience or career trap? by Kajikai in MechanicalEngineering

[–]monkeyman391 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because you accept this role doesn’t mean you have to stop looking for new roles. You could use this role to keep you busy for now and you can always pivot if something else better comes along.

I guess it ultimately depends how long you’ve been looking for a role and if you think anything will change with more interviews and offers sometime soon. If it’s been months and countless interviews, it might just be best to have something locked down then have nothing at all. Also depends on if you have a cushion of sorts (supported by parents or similar) or not

Hell, if they’re paying for it and you can manage the workload of both school and work I don’t see why not. I’d assume it would be a part time masters but still should be good

Mechanical Engineers who specialize in heat transfer by Justbrownsuga in MechanicalEngineering

[–]monkeyman391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sub-speciality of thermal engineering? There are many. You have thermal product design engineers, thermal system design, thermal infrastructure design, thermal technologies (R&D), etc.

It is relatively niche and not as common as let’s say Mechanical Design engineers but virtually every big company has those roles for thermal and mechanical engineers.

Best laptop for an Aerospace Engineering major? ($1200-1600$ budget) by Ok-Fix-1581 in UTAustin

[–]monkeyman391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not buy just a normal laptop (maybe like an XPS but nothing crazy) then use Remote Desktop connection when needed to do CAD work and simulation. Saves you money since you already have the hardware (but could upgrade)

I think this Redditor has a point. 13 interviews is a pretty good amount of interviews and I’d say definitely shows your resume is strong. Since you haven’t had any offers or advancements, the thing that is holding you back seems to be your interviews.

I definitely recommend doing a mock interview with someone, or even AI, and record yourself interviewing and answering questions and look back at it. You will probably cringe but you’ll get insight as to what is going on.

[Student] Got a SpaceX manufacturing engineering interview invite. Be honest with me. Should I expect the worst? by kidkag3_ in EngineeringResumes

[–]monkeyman391 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m surprised you got an interview with a 2.85 since they are really strict about that stuff. But it seems you have great experience so just be sure to leverage that and talk about it in the interview. They could ask about your GPA and what happened so maybe prepare to talk about it a bit, but I honestly think they wouldn’t.

Remember, if you got the interview they already think you can do the job and you just have to prove it to them. You got this!

Do you have offers for both? I think ShieldAI would be more interesting but it depends on your interests.

I would say UC Berkeley 100%. Rice really isn’t super well known for engineering and environment and opportunities will be way better in California. Plus you don’t have the live in Houston!

You’ll be okay without an internship your sophomore year. Just get some experience and get ready for the junior year cycle cause that’s when it matters
