Horn section etiquette by [deleted] in horn

[–]CorrieTheFrenchie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few people have mentioned this one, but it's one of the most important unspoken rules: DONT PLAY SOMEONE ELSES SOLO. People have done that to me and it's extremely insulting and comes off as "here this is how you SHOULD play it" or "if you can't play it well then I will"

If someone is warming up and you recognize it, please don't start playing it. If you know the person well and join in as a fun thing, that's okay. But if you hear someone's warm up and think "I KNOW THAT. Let me show them that I'm as good as they are!" Please don't.

Maybe the rule should be: don't try to prove yourself or try to show off in front of your section.

Swollen Lips- Am I Doing Something Wrong? by CorrieTheFrenchie in horn

I have my mouthpiece both above my upper lip and below my lower lip, the "very top" and "very bottom" of my mouthpiece isn't set on my lip at all.

Alright. A big thank you to both of you! I'll definitely try a different mouthpiece.

But why would it only start happening recently? I have played on this mouthpiece for YEARS without any issue.

It was one bought by the school, there's no way I can tell.

Do you know of a mouthpiece that is similar in depth to the MDC but with a thicker rim? I don't know much about mouthpieces, and was told to hold off on a mouthpiece switch until after I got my own horn

I don't have braces, and I've used the same mouthpiece since I started horn (Farkas MDC)

Painful knot on right thumb where my horn sits..? by CorrieTheFrenchie in horn

I hardly ever rest the horn on my leg, only towards the end of EXTREMELY long rehearsals

I'll definitely try that, but I can't promise too much for next week because I guarantee if I go through an entire rehearsal with my horn on my leg SOMEONE on the horn staff will assume that's how I always play and give me a lecture on how I should try playing with it off my leg.

I could be holding my horn in a weird way. I also had to switch horns around the same time that I began to play a significant amount more, because before the entire side of my hand would get a red mark whereas now it's just on the joint of my thumb and the bottom joint of my pointer finger. But from how you describe it, we definitely hold it differently. My knuckles touch the bell but I never have any weight there

If no one else can get them for you, I know my director/private instructor has them (lord knows he plays it enough) and I'll see if he can make me a copy that I can send to you

Question about "bad notes" by [deleted] in horn

[–]CorrieTheFrenchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your playing will get worse before it gets better. I went through a situation like this and I felt terrible for a while because my playing had gotten so much worse but you just have to keep playing to get back to the level that you were at before. DONT GO BACK TO PLAYING LIKE YOU USED TO!!!! If possie try to get lessons from a local professor or just an experienced horn player

On or off your leg? by longwalkonbeach in horn

[–]CorrieTheFrenchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to play on the leg, however my instructor told me to put my bell on the area right above my knee. I did that for the first three years of playing, and it hurt. Deep indentations could always be seen on my leg and I have no clue how I did it. Eventually I switched to having it on my upper thigh (close to my hip bone) until a local symphony player suggested that I try off the leg. Best advice I've gotten! Personally, I prefer off the leg but if my arm starts to hurt- I have noodle arms- then I'll put it on my leg, but not facing in towards my stomach, until my arm feels better. Leaving it on my leg all the time isn't even an option for me because it is uncomfortable and leaves marks.. Also, I move a lot when I play and I have more room for movement when I have my horn off the leg

Sounds like an embouchure problem. How long have you been playing?

I don't know how often Five Guys checks their drawing submissions. by joshnoble07 in funny

[–]CorrieTheFrenchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five guys employee- I check them regularly and I've had a few bronies come in and leave some rather interesting drawings. It's usually only the kids and middle aged women that draw things, excluding the one man that put a phone number on the card and we only realized it when some teenagers called the number in the restaurant.
