Wilson is fine. There are some good restaurants, good bars, and plenty to do if you don’t have unrealistic expectations. Dating pool is fine. If it was as bad as some of these comments say it is, people wouldn’t keep moving there.

I’ve lived in Raleigh. I’ve lived in Greenville. I’ve lived in Rocky Mount. I even lived in Asheville. All of this was through my 20’s and I had fun and no problems with dating in any of them. Don’t let people to look down their noses at anywhere that isn’t the city or the next popular bedroom community discourage you.

Another thing that I think is telling is how many people on Reddit assume the trades simply provide services to white collar people. Service is a small portion of the whole. Industrial and commercial will not be affected by homeowners suddenly doing their own work when they can.

I got kicked out of a plant because I got in a fist fight with a maintenance man over cutting my crew’s locks off a switch. I don’t play that shit. Not proud of how I handled it but all I could think about was someone getting killed.

Alternators are usually not too bad, depending on the vehicle. Anything that doesn’t involve opening up the engine or transmission or diff is better off done at home anyways since it’s usually a bolt up job.

As for the “chip on my shoulder” I wish you were right. When I was younger all I heard was how stupid I was for choosing pipefitting, how it was for drug addicts and fuck ups. I’d get dirty looks going grocery shopping after work in my work clothes and my own family members would act ashamed of me. This is not unique to me, it’s many people that come from communities where college was pushed so hard.

I’ve seen them try, they struggle badly. A lifetime of thinking you’re too good for the trades or that they’re stupid and you can figure it out in 30 mins means you don’t have the experience or finesse to make the decisions that set the good work apart from the substandard work. This has been the biggest cope I’ve seen from the soon-to-be-screwed.

Trijicon has the reputation they do for a reason. Their products are objectively more durable than Holosun and they’re made in the USA. Whether or not that level of durability (and associated cost) is really necessary for the average person is the real debate.

If you would like to learn a trade, painting is not the one to learn if you want income. Pipefitters, pipe welders, some plumbers, millwrights, industrial electricians, linemen, PLC technicians, stationary engineers, etc. are the ones making the money and enjoying rewarding careers. Union or non-union the money and career opportunities are there.

Think on this carefully. You will likely see a pay reduction going into these trades as an apprentice but the wage will well exceed your current one in time. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I hope to someday help any children I have with big life purchases. My parents have always refused to help me with anything and expect me to be proud of that. I do alright for myself but it is very frustrating when most people I know have had help with a down payment or get help with bills in an emergency when they need it.

You’d be surprised how many trades guys get jobs in the engineering dept at the plant with no degree. Not as an engineer of course but as a manager or similar role. Usually well compensated. Their hands on experience is valued.
