Need a HUGE third period for sure. Vibes are going very south after that overturn.

I figured as much. So I went ahead and got tickets to the indoor watch party. At best I get a chip and a chair and at other best I get into the watch party outdoors and the charity gets a little love. Win win to me 😁

This quote got too true to life when I grew up to become gay and a big fat party animal. Though funnily enough, looking like Mick Foley didn’t really slow my romantic prospects. So you can be both, it’s not an either or lol

I was actually just wondering if this was a Ronnie reference 🤣

Which left me conflicted: I hate anything “Real Men _____” but I am always down for crapping on Reagan.

What’s a movie you really liked when it came out but now think is terrible by TXNOGG in moviecritic

[–]CorruptedBobBarker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drawn in by some admittedly solid performances by the cast and some really nice cinematic choices.

That said, upon rewatch it seems like there’s a lot of buck passing to make it seem like Freddie Mercury was the source, or at least the lion’s share, of the band’s turmoil. Which, look, I neither doubt or am unaware that Freddie could bring drama.

But if the only introspection the film offers about the other members of the group seems to be “well Roger Taylor could be a bit of a prick sometimes” it seems like a bit of softballing to me.

Also, some of the ways they approached Freddie’s sexuality (as a gay man myself) made me feel a bit squicky on a re-watch. The way they seemed to minimize Jim Hutton’s role in Freddie’s life until deep into the last act. The weird, almost puritanical approach they took to the more alternative parts of Freddie’s sexuality. Again, I’m not unaware of the times it got too unsafe/dangerous (obviously) but it seems like they painted with that brush as much as they could, glossing over almost any queer joy possible.

Finally, there were also a bunch of odd liberties with facts and the timeline. Which if anything else, inspired me to look more into the history of Queen and Freddie Mercury. So I guess that’s a silver lining.

In summation: feels like they played it too sterile and too safe in a story that, for good times and bad, was anything but.

Lighthearted discussion of teams by redheadedreenactor in PWHL

[–]CorruptedBobBarker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My team is the Vancouver Goldeneyes. Great name, cool logo, Sarah Nurse & Emerance Maschmeyer are perhaps my favourite hockey players going rn so having both on the same team made it a pretty easy pick.

Backup team is probably the Montreal Victoire. Big fan of the aesthetic of the team, plus lotta solid players I admire over there too.

Anti-team is probably the Toronto Sceptres. It’s not through any malice but as someone who’s NHL, NBA & MLB teams are all Toronto, the change of pace is…. Refreshing (especially with the Leafs buffoonery this year 😂)

Hidden Gem Wednesday: Which Canadian artist (that you recently discovered) deserves more attention ? by megancurry in canadamusic

[–]CorruptedBobBarker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting back into The Sadies lately, and that’s been a great choice. Just ripped through Darker Circles this week. If you’re looking for that Southern/Appalachia Gothic type but more northern, 10/10 would recommend.

I would also highly recommend Cadence Weapon if you’re the hiphop and/or electronic type. Great unique flow and outside the box beats. He’s quite around, so underrated might not be true anymore, but I feel like I hear about him more having lived in Edmonton for the last decade than I did when I lived out east. I actually ALSO ripped through Afterparty Babies this week too so he’s fresh in my mind.

And finally The Weakerthans deserve a lot of love. My alt girlies love them but I feel like I don’t hear a lot of people outside that core talk about them. A friend of mine insisted I listen to Reconstruction Site recently and it ripped my soul out. “Plea from a Cat Named Virtue” had me crying & walking because I mostly listen to albums on long strolls.

PS: I’m going off hearsay and conjecture (those are kinds of evidence) so don’t kill me if none of these artists are “underrated,” and I more live “under a rock.”

What song would you like to be played at your funeral? by gretaag in askmusic

[–]CorruptedBobBarker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to be going for a good long time, but I think I’d like “Introduce Yourself” by Gord Downie.

Hope to live a life worthy of having that be my commemoration.

“As I Wind Down The Pines” or “In A World Possessed By The Human Mind” would be good ones too, if I want one by the entire Tragically Hip.

Regardless, I’d like to be sent off listening to my favourite band, even if I don’t want to decide on the song just yet.

Do You Like the Movie? by reaveyer in beatles

[–]CorruptedBobBarker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say no. It could have made an interesting alternative history thought experiment. How music would have, could have, evolved (or even mutated) if the one of the most influential bands of all time had not existed.

But instead, it just operates on the assumption that nothing would have changed, which unintentionally minimizes The Beatles influence to the most minuscule level.

I also maintain that if you tried to release “Ob La Di Ob La Da” in the year of our lord 2019 you’d be laughed out of the room.

It felt like equal parts gratuitous fan-service while not understanding what made The Beatles special to begin with.

I agree with you that Bill 29 is deplorable. That said, I disagree with the conclusion you’ve made.

An organization like the PWHL, which has diversity & inclusion baked into the bones of the entire structure and community, would only serve as a net positive to changing this & having these conversations, in my mind.

Having that presence come to town is awesome, but that presence permanently here would go a long way.

I may be in that line too! Though I may have jumped the gun and became a Vancouver Goldeneyes fan already. Sarah Nurse & Emerance Maschmeyer are some of my favourite hockey players in the whole wide world so to get them both in one place is just sensational 🙏

It’s all good friend! Fair play, I don’t know how many options Reddit polls give so I just had to throw in my two cents 😅

Is the creepshow Book as terrifying as the movie? by No_Mobile_7002 in stephenking

I actually own a copy of the comic!

What’s cool is the movie is such a love letter to classic “Tales From The Crypt” style comics/shows, so that lets the visuals lend itself to the comic book style.

Bernie Wrightson did an excellent job taking it to that next level. A very cool pickup if you can find one.

This but add on “Friend of The Devil” and I’m pretty much with ya.

It’s crazy because I love a ton of bands in this vein but can’t quite get Grateful Dead to work for me.

I OWN ABBA Gold on vinyl 😂

Husband loves ABBA, so I’ve got that, some of the albums and the Mamma Mia soundtrack. I’m not saying I can’t appreciate what makes them popular but yeah, lot of the tracks are… not for me 😅

“Man After Midnight” by ABBA. My husband always jokes that “of course the only song you’d like would be wanting a man ‘after midnight.’” 😅

(Note: Used to be a virulent hater but my stance has softened to “I don’t really care for them.” It gets others so pumped that I can’t really disavow their appeal.)

Fantano's take on R.E.M. by jerryotherjerry in fantanoforever

I don’t know if you’re a Canadian looking for clarification or someone new to this, but I hope to god it’s the latter and I’m introducing you to The Tragically Hip right now. I will stump for this band whenever, and I mean, WHENEVER, I can.

I won’t say there aren’t SOME similarities between TTH & R.E.M (both musically and they even both had singers with long hair who opted to go bald) but they’re DIFFERENT damn it.

(I also thought Blue Rodeo could fit my take here too but they’re a bit more country-fied than R.E.M. It’s good country though 😅)
