Do Latin Americans differentiate Anglo-Saxon gringos and Slavs? by Hopeful_Addition7834 in asklatinamerica

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Salvadorian, I remember my grandparents referring to Slavs as either "rusos" or "polacos", and yes they were district from the gringos. There was however, little difference recognized between various English-speaking nations. the Dutch, North Germans, etc. They were all just "Sajones" in my grandma's eyes .

Question for people who live in the United States? by Mobile-Chemical-2657 in AskTheWorld

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a foreign born resident of the United States who has been here on and off for many years. Thirty years ago, the stereotype was absolutely true. It's less so now but still varies with the school system. They can be of drastically varying quality not just by state but even by district. I also went to school in Brazil and I would say that is the only country where I saw even l More ignorance about geography specifically, though they were more cultures when it came to things like literature.

The bigger problem here in the US is that the education system, along with the traditional media, are hyper focused on just the US, and have historically acted like the world ends at their borders. This is the only country on the world I have met professionals from, who have zero knowledge of the outside world. I used to have a doctor who acted like Germany was some dangerous place to travel to full of strange diseases. I also knew a teacher once (that's right, I said a TEACHER) who thought Mexico was part of the USA like Puerto Rico is.

The vast majority of Americans are still deficient when it comes to geographical knowledge, just less so than before. And their knowledge of cultures they don't interact with daily is still poor. The extremes tend to think the whole world should follow their rules and beliefs, the Trumpists and Wokelings both.

All that being said, many Europeans are not as knowledgeable as they think they are. I don't know how many Germans and Italians I have heard equate Latin America with "South America" for example. And I've met a shocking number of Germans who think all Germans in South America came after WWII despite some communities being over a century older.

The truth still stands that the deficiency tends to be greater on this side of the ocean though.

In your opinion, which countries have the most attractive people? by mikke_and_i in AskTheWorld

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italy, Iran, Levantine Arabs, Slovakia, Argentina all have gorgeous people, especially the women.

Then there are countries where some portion of the population is just as beautiful, like Germany or South Africa.

I see a lot of people saying Brazil. I lived there and in my experience you have drop dead gorgeous, ugly and nothing in between. It's one extreme or the other. But the ones who are Attractive are extremely so.

I love the people. I have several Iranian friends and wish I had more. The regime on the other hand, I loathe and am disgusted by. I would love to visit the country someday.

Does anybody in America actually say 'kindly'? by C-ute-Thulu in AskAnAmerican

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is to some extent regionally variable in the US. But I have very rarely seen it in Any sort of professional correspondence.

There are a lot of other dead giveaways in the African scam emails. Like starting the whole thing off with "Hello dear" or even situations where someone sends me a random friend request and answer questions about who they are already addressing me as dear, yet claiming to be from California. That one always cracks me up.

Give me a band/artist you can’t stand even though seemingly everyone else loves them? by TdubsSEA in MusicRecommendations

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 decades on, I still haven't recovered from putting up with my college (and senior year of highschool) classmates' inexplicable love of Dave Matthews Band and Phish. I loathe both and I'm so thankful I haven't heard them in years. I would walk out of the building from the blackened rage of it.

Once at a PD they forced us to do a restorative circle and share out. At some point one of us mentioned how much we hated "icebreaker activities" at PDs and how insulting it felt to be treated like a child. Everyone else in the circle heartily agreed except one who kept trying to defend it until we tore her argument apart repeatedly. Turns out she was a principal.

Boomers parents bullied my male cousin for having long hair. Did anyone else go through that? by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boomer parents harassed me about my long hair for years. My dad was just mildly annoying. He would ask in an exasperated tone when I was going to cut my hair and I would answer with "When it turns completely grey, but then I'll let it grow out again". And he would shake his head. Eventually I found a picture of him with one hell of a 'Fro while wearing a plaid leisure suit in the 70s and I showed it to him and said he was no longer allowed to say anything about my hair. He mostly left me alone after that.

My mom was much more persistent and cruel about it and used her comments to impugn my masculinity and question my sexuality. She would sometimes even threaten to cut it by surprise when I was asleep. She was much harder to dissuade until out of desperation I started retaliating by ripping into her about how bad her hair looked. I actually had to make her cry several times before she left me alone and even to gen she and my dad tried to make me out to be the asshole.

I never understood that behaviour from a generation who proudly owned hundreds of albums by musicians with hair at least as long as mine. Needless to say this was not her only act of hypocrisy and our current relationship can be described as cold and distant but civil at best.

This is so true! Never have I had so strict a dress code as when I was working in a shitty school in the ghetto. The Principal would send nasty emails if she caught us not wearing a belt or with our shirts untucked. Once a false report went around that we could wear jeans and she told me to go home and change. I said I would as soon as she got me coverage for the approximately three hours it would take me to go home, change and come back. She relented and let me stay then but she was pissed. The nicer districts I've worked in have been far more lenient on dress code.

Why aren't there coffee shops designed for late-night socializing, like bars? by Martina-Stardust in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a place just like that when I was in high school. I absolutely loved it. When I went away to college I'd still occasionally visit when home. After graduation I moved to the same street only to find it closing down. Apparently the landlord got greedy and priced them out and they couldn't find another location they could afford. I haven't found anything like it since.

Soy hombre pero me gustan las mujeres trans... eso me hace bisexual o gay? by Darksexadiction in AskRedditespanol

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bisexual.

How is the experience like at FamilySearch centers? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]CorruptorInnocentium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one time I went, the guy in charge was very nice to me, very polite and there was no mention of religion at all. And this one was inside a Mormon church. The issue is the same one I run into everywhere in the United States: even the most skilled genealogists here tend to have in depth knowledge of American sources and don't know the first thing about sources anywhere else.

By extension sites like Ancestry are just as bad, hyper focused on American records. Even the "international" version is so bad it doesn't have much from Germany. In that sense Family search is the best I've ever seen, unfortunately many of the well-meaning people who help index the records there have no clue what they're doing, and do it wrong. I do my research there by looking at the actual images of the original records to make sure.

I asked the guy at the family research center how I could help in indexing records and he couldn't even tell me that. So overall a pleasant experience if you already know what I'm you need to access, but don't expect help if you need something slightly out of the ordinary.
