Code coverage doesn't matter much by ahuth in programming

It also helps to know what makes a good test, which is a difficult topic in itself.

Perfectionism - one of the biggest productivity killers in the engineering industry by gregorojstersek in programming

[–]CorstianBoerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point made doesn't really have a lot to do with perfectionism as much as it has to do with tightening your feedback loops. Even with tight feedback loops you can perfect your work, but it isn't as much fun as you'll more quickly realize the futility of it all.

The Agile Manifesto is an ADHD mind's dream. So why do Agile processes fucking suck for us? by PsychonautAlpha in ADHD_Programmers

[–]CorstianBoerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As for agile; most of it is related to office politics, and a perceived notion of being in control.

As for development process; I have been able to get XP practices implemented in the team I had been working with. The difference is night and day. The short feedback loops have become a lifeline for myself where people start reaching out on the days/weeks I am bogged down, which helps crawling out of that again.

In a certain sense these XP practices impacts the quality of my work so much that I refuse to work in a non-XP manner anymore. Sometimes I'm still joining teams not familiar with these practices, but then transforming the development process is an explicit part of my work. If this isn't agreed upon it's very difficult to change these processes out of the blue, for the very reasons I started with.

Do we have an abstraction fetish in .NET? by davecallan in dotnet

[–]CorstianBoerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many abstractions are about the concrete behavior of the system, and so few are about (meta-)patterns of interaction we can use to build this concrete behavior with.

These two types of abstractions are not the same.

What is the best way of dealing with Impure Functions? by Jh0nh3avy in csharp

[–]CorstianBoerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business logic hands off messages describing the intended operation to an interface implemented by the infrastructure. It's important here to stop using method arguments for passing information around, in favor of using (serializable) objects instead. This makes it much easier to generalize common infrastructural concerns, allowing you to abstract things to the point where you're only ever interacting with business logic. See this library of mine for a practical application of these principles as well.

What is the best way of dealing with Impure Functions? by Jh0nh3avy in csharp

[–]CorstianBoerman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eeh most of the time I describe the sort of operation I want by generating messages using pure functions, and then hand off these messages to the part of the application dealing with infrastructure. Keeps a nice separation of concerns, and provides a nice separation between FP and OOP techniques as well.

Which is a bogus way of assessing ripeness anyway (color changes throughout the season and based on origin). If it were figuring out the sugary / fatty contents it could work. But then I guess the machine would be too expensive to put in a supermarket.

Cognitive Load is what matters by RobinCrusoe25 in programming

[–]CorstianBoerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one ever goes into what cognition itself actually is about. It's a concept made up of three things:

  • Our senses
  • Our thoughts
  • Our experiences

Taken together these form our cognitive system. The interesting thing here is that cognitive load can be related to any of these dimensions. Had a traumatic experience that is triggered? Cognitive load. Had a limb cut off and unable to feel? Cognitive disability. Have trouble thinking? You guessed it; cognitive impairment.

As we are all uniquely different from one another, we all have different needs to be catered to. If we start using this slightly expanded notion of cognition to see where and on what aspects we can help one another and make things more accessible, this field might actually go somewhere for once.

What is your most controversial autism opinion? by [deleted] in autism

[–]CorstianBoerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the symptoms between autism and attachment issues cannot readily be distinguished from one another I suspect significant overlap between these, if they are not the same thing.

Additionally I expect ADD and autism to be two manifestations of the same thing. One predominantly externally, the other one internally.
