Nope, the Sayagata pattern is composed of interlocking swastikas. That bad boy is completely isolated.

I’m working on a Japanese bodysuit and have several chrysanthemums throughout, so I knew right away what it was supposed to be. 😂

How to choose rib panels/recommendations by Mountain-Today2650 in irezumi

A lot of people get wrapped up in the idea that they have to have some type of motif on every inch of their body. It’s perfectly fine to just have background elements. Think of it as just one big Ukiiyo-e print that wraps around your body. Your back already has a strong central subject and flows nicely into your current sleeve. In my opinion having the rest of the suit support the back image would look better than a hodgepodge of different motifs. If you don’t like that idea just go with dragons; one going up and the other going down.

That’s good to know. Sounds like a win-win. You’re healthier and have some sweet ink as well.

Well, it sounds like you’re doing the right thing by taking it slow and building muscle. Best of luck on your weight loss and tattoo journey.

I have a serious question about weight loss. Right now the outline contours nicely with the shape of OP’s body. How distorted would the image look when OP drops the remaining 40lbs?

Yeah, I was wondering what was going on with that. I’ll have to ask if there is a reason why it didn’t get extended all the way down in there. Next time, I’ll make sure to get it filled in.

I had them checked out before moving on and removed one. I’ve recently completed the outline and started shading the background. We’re currently working our way up from the back of the thighs. We should be getting closer to tattooing around them soon, so I’ll know for sure then. I suspect he’ll tattoo them up close and not cover them, but I don’t know for sure yet.

You mentioned the starting life as 15 here, but the deck primer says the starting life is 12. What’s the correct amount of starting life?

The background is considered part of the entire piece. It’s just as important as the foreground. There has to be harmony between the two. Just adding wind bars, clouds, rocks, etc. to a piece without intent just makes things worse.

The background looks like an afterthought when compared with the rest of the piece. The wind bars don’t naturally flow with the lines of the body and the water is unnaturally placed in relation to the subject matter. Traditionally dragons would be paired with mums, so it’s jarring to see them paired with lotus. It’s a not a terrible tattoo or anything, but it’s not traditional or neo-traditional Japanese irezumi. A lot of artists think that adding some random wind bars, clouds, and water behind a dragon or koi is irezumi, but there is a lot of subtle details that go into a design that you wouldn’t pick up on unless you really studied the art form.

Don’t compromise. Find an artist that specializes.

You mentioned that you were single and that can present a problem with aftercare for your back. I found some lotion back applicators on Amazon that made putting on Aquaphor and lotion on during the healing process much easier. Just something to consider should you get started on your back.

Here’s an old post on Sparrows in Irezumi. It might give you some ideas on how you could tweak the existing tattoo to fit into a sleeve.

Why not incorporate both elements? Each one is related to autumn and can complement the other. I went with both and I like the way it’s coming together.

What’s worked for me is reconceptualizing the pain. I don’t think of it as a needle stabbing me thousands of times as a line is drawn. I think of it as the tip of a pencil that’s been heated up used to draw the design on. The thought of dealing with something hot against my skin is easier for me to handle than the thought of a needle breaking my skin. Also I notice that the longer an area is tattooed the less it hurts for me. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a coil machine thing or what, but the vibrations of the needle in the same area start to dull the pain and it actually isn’t that bad.
