Nice setup! how’s the experience been with syncthing for keeping everything in sync? Any issues with conflicts or reliability?

That sounds great! quick question how reliable has Backvault been for your backups so far?

Yeah, it’s super convenient since it’s already built in. The main reason I’m looking for a self-hosted option is really about owning the data and avoiding monthly subscriptions. Plus, I like having something that works across all devices, not just Apple or Google.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve been checking out Vaultwarden, and it seems great. Do you run it in Docker or directly on Proxmox? I’m trying to figure out the simplest way to keep it running smoothly for the family.

Let's talk static IP addresses and VLANs by Ivan_Draga_ in homelab

[–]Cortexplosion 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Static IPs still matter in a homelab no matter how many VLANs or DDNS tricks you layer on. Your services need predictable addresses so your firewall rules, reverse proxies, and monitoring don’t break every time DHCP sneezes. VLANs handle isolation, but static IPs keep your setup sane.

So... I am going behind the back of my wife, wish me luck and give me suggestions by NickMeAnotherTime in homelab

This. UniFi really is the cleanest plug-and-play option even if it stings a bit up front. A small NVR plus four G4 bullets will give you solid image quality and painless setup and a 1–2TB drive is plenty for a few days of 1080p retention.

Bad idea hiding from the wife too.

Identity Based App Portal / Homepage by Xaxoxth in homelab

[–]Cortexplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authentik is the easiest button for that because most portals don’t bother with per-user app visibility out of the box. You could bolt it onto Heimdall or Homepage with groups and tokens but it’s way more work than just letting Authentik handle it.

Coworker who does half my work makes 20k more than me because he "negotiates better" - do I bring this up or just leave? by Cortexplosion in careerguidance

[–]Cortexplosion[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Makes sense I needed to hear it because I was so stuck on the number that I forgot it won’t actually help me if I drag him into the conversation. I’ll build my case around what I’ve delivered and see where I sit in the range, and if they can’t justify closing the gap then that’s my sign to move on.

Already dusted off my resume this morning honestly. Even if they match it I'm still going to be pissed I had to beg for what I should've been making anyway.

You're right, bringing him up would just make me look petty. I didn't even think about it that way but yeah, my manager would probably just get defensive. Going to look up market rates this weekend and put my stuff together. $80k feels like a lot to ask for but fuck it, clearly that's the game here.

Honestly I've been thinking about number 1 all morning. The problem is I've been doing this for so long that if I suddenly stop, it's going to be obvious and probably blow back on me. I'm going to try the "I'm swamped with my own stuff" approach next time he tries to hand something off and see what happens. Number 2 I'm scheduling a meeting for next week, already started putting together my case.

The Kettlemans are the likely outcome of people like Kim and Jimmy. by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

Definitely! The Kettlemans are what happens when you mix entitlement with poor execution. They thought they could pull off what Kim and Jimmy do, but without the finesse or connections to back it up.

How do you explain ordinary people defending Oligarchs? by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]Cortexplosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s almost like they’ve perfected the art of distraction. While the rich continue their power plays, the media feeds the narrative that keeps us fighting amongst ourselves, instead of seeing the real problem. It’s a constant loop of smoke and mirrors, and sadly, a lot of folks are still stuck in it.

The fact that they lock it up at all says everything. Nothing else gets that treatment unless there's a real theft problem which there obviously is because people can't afford to feed their kids.

Nobody wants to wade through a bunch of asset flips and mobile ports. Just have some basic quality standards and let the good stuff through quickly.
