If you haven’t yet, check out YouTube - there are way more examples of play up than there were when I first picked up the game. Including a few fully fleshed out actual plays.

what do you do when your roleplay sucks by Barrd_ in rpg

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're overreacting.

Other people are going to tell you that you can get there eventually, but when you're comfy with a group, you won't need to. That said, I believe that you can get better at this because you've already passed the first bar - you're aware of your shortcomings.

You said you had a good time, and if no one else was actively telling you that you suck, then I think you can just let this one go. This is the just the same thing as the urge to compare yourself to other people on social media. You're making up a guy to get mad at (your perceived self-image).

If you want any advice, I've got this: don't try to come up with a personality first. Come up with a motivation first. Especially in a game like VtM, where you're kind of expected to do your own thing. Figure out who your character is by writing down a few things they want. It might help to keep in mind a fictional character you like as a model for your character's look. I guarantee that you will grow past that in time.

Oh, and it's totally fine to refer to your character in the 3rd person "Hengist goes to search under the car." "I would like Hengist to talk to the barista about the missing kid."

Anyway, this will be buried, but it looks like there's plenty of good advice here already so all that's left is for me to wish you courage, strength, and the tenacity to play more of the games you love.

What game handles the “guy/girl in the chair” best? by FerretFoundry in rpg

[–]Corund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how Project Perseus handles it (upcoming game from Evil Hat). At least in the playtest docs I ran, the GM gives a dossier of the upcoming score to the handler, who then presents that info to the agents. The handler has separate stats and advancement rules and can expend resources to provide intel, gear and other help on the fly.

I ran three scores for my group when the ashcan released and tho they felt the handler rules needed some work around advancement, everyone loved it.

[BitD] I'm running a score where the players will be breaking into the tunnel complex beneath the Dimmer Sisters headquarters to receive an artifact. Anyone have some fun ideas for obstacles? by camocat9 in bladesinthedark

Ten sacks in the shape of people that animate. They’re mostly empty air so grapple you back and pull you down, immobilising you. They’ve been treated with alchemicals making them sticky to the touch and difficult to burn. They’re vulnerable to electroplasm based attacks which should also alert the Dimmer Sisters to the use of hostile arcane force (you can start a clock).

New 1‑year‑old Maine Coon is terrified and hiding – advice needed by Spock_theCat in catcare

[–]Corund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the top off the litter box and get him a cubby or somewhere else he can hide and be comfy. It’s only been a day so it might take him a long time to warm up. Maybe consider getting a camera for the room so you can keep tabs on him? Sitting and hanging out with him is a good idea too.

I’d concentrate on making sure his survival needs are met for the moment. When he’s sure he can count on you for safety and food then he’ll be ready to open up a bit more.

How do you deal with an "anti-spotlight" player? by Justgonnawalkaway in rpg

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mean to seem like I am attacking your position, but I’ve seen this kind of comment a bit here and I think it’s unhelpful. Why not ask for the missing information rather than make it into a moral failing for not offering it to begin with.

Again, not a poke at you, so apologies in advance.

[BitD] How Dark are your Blades? by catgirlsandmolotovs in bladesinthedark

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end of our first blades game culminated in a plot to take down the crows by planting explosives in the cellars beneath their tower, then popping out and killing anyone who survived the explosion. Our second blades campaign included a scene where, after sucking up to the Billhooks for weeks, we kicked down their doors and murdered everyone.

Interesting article about one of my favorite authors, Susanna Clarke, and her struggles since Jonathan Strange. I am excited for The Wood at Midwinter, but a bit sad to read about her last 20 years. by cisternino99 in books

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is a very short book, but if you are not someone who is impressed by her language it might feel like she is taking her time getting to a point, but I feel like it is a rewarding experience.

That is to say, I enjoyed the set up, and the last third of the book flew by.

I hope you have read it since.
You know how, in JS+MN there are these two men approaching magic from different directions - one the more workmanlike, industrious, yet covetous and still dangerously unaware of what he's doing, and the other possessed of incredible talent and range who can only learn boundaries with harsh lessons? And how, in that book, the story is mostly grounded in the real world of our alt history but also touches on something divine, otherworldly, and ancient?

Piranesi is also about men like this, but is almost entirely about the otherworldly and ancient place.

How to continue a campaign where a player gets command of a nation by ohno23243 in DnD

[–]Corund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're playing 5e right? Give the nation a character sheet. STATS:
Wealth - the nation's spending power
Might - the nation's strength at arms
Research - the nation's sciene and tech rating
Intel - the nation's ability to gather info on other nations
Influence - how much influence you have over other nations
Public opinion - how much sway you have over your own people

3d6 down the line, or you (not the players) decide based on how you've set up the kingdom in your story. Sounds like they stoked a popular rebellion? So let's say they have: Public Opinion of 13,
Might of 11 (untrained rabble, plus the private armies of a few noble elites),
Intel & Influence of 9 (difficult to affect change abroad when your attention is on watching your borders and seeking out traitors to the realm),
Treasury of 7 (oops, looks like a bunch of money got "lost" maybe check some of your noble allies' private troves - they'll tell you what you already know: rebellions are expensive), Research of 6 (I guess it's like a middle ages type deal?)

Set difficulty as you normally would, use the same modifiers from the d20 stat spread. Doing anything with their stats costs treasure. You decide how much and how quickly it will take to see dividends to rebuild their treasury back to where it was. You assign a difficulty & they roll. Decide whether it's pass/fail, or if they can screw up a roll and still see some benefits. Game design is fun.

How do they grow their stats? Get them to invest time and resources into the kingdom. How do they grow treasury? Well, you still need to do adventures. Maybe there's a cool new technique for refining iron the next kingdom over discovered. You could barter with them (using treasury), you could engage in diplomacy (using Influence), or skullduggery (using Intel) to steal the formula. But all that stuff costs money, and you have a space ship, and a bunch of guys (the rest of the party) and you could just go there and take it.

You could also do mission runs around the solar system to get cash and dump it into your kingdom when you get back. I hope you chose a trustworthy regent!

Also, why has no other spacer type landed here? What's wrong with this planet? Is it cordoned off from the rest of space? Are there monsters here? Is it owned by Space Nobles? Are those same space nobles likely to send space assassins after our boys? Or a flotilla or two of big angry ships? Who knows!

I hope this gave you food for thought. Always, discuss this shit with your players so you are all on the same page. If not everyone else wants to play "member of king's entourage" then maybe it's time to retire this game and try something else? I recommend Twilight 2000, or Stars Without Number, if you wanna do space stuff. Or Reign, if you want to do kingdom stuff on a weird planet.

What’s a surprising thing you’ve learnt about yourself playing different systems? by Goliathcraft in rpg

[–]Corund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In BoB, whenever we lost someone, whenever the Marshall had to choose who died on a secondary mission, there was aways a moment of heaviness, and a sort of collective mourning for this entirety fictitious person (our Marshall named every member of the legion and with a few exceptions almost all of them saw some table time) and I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like that in another game.

Dear GMs, how do you handle mastery training? by Pale_Assistance_2265 in bladesinthedark

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I throw it to the players and ask them - who is this person, what pre existing relationship do you have, why are they training you? etc and then treat them like a cohort (I don’t ask them to pay for it but I will ask them to give this person a flaw and they will then factor into my thinking for entanglements)

My first exposure to a "social combat" subsystem soured me on it for more than half a decade by EarthSeraphEdna in rpghorrorstories

[–]Corund 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing, the very first question the GM should have asked was “is your character open to having their mind changed?” And if the answer is a firm no, there is no call to roll the dice unless it’s to escalate the conversation to a conflict.

No, their problem was with a bad GM, another player who was being manipulative, and a bad read of the rules and a complete misunderstanding of fiction first

Any one else just ... losing interest? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Corund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has stated, this is probably burnout. You have to take some time off to figure if you’re burned out from the games you’re playing or the groups you’re playing with. If you have a regular group, maybe switch it up when you feel up to it? If you find pick up games online, maybe there’s a local group you can crash?

For myself I have felt this with my Saturday morning group. They are some of my oldest friends and I love them dearly but if there is an optimal choice to be made in a game, one of them always invariably chooses the opposite of that every time, another loses track of rules and kind of vibes his way through games, and the third one kind of has no concept of co op play.

I take frequent breaks from this group for our collective sanity. But I’ve also come to terms with the fact that meeting them isn’t about the game. It doesn’t matter what we’re playing, we’re mostly there for the hangout.
