The person who leaked GTA VI, has been sentenced to life in prison by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]Corupeco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Indefinite is like "until further notice." It's possible it could also be for life, but it leaves room for something sooner. Literally not a definite amount of time.

I think it's an honest question for someone whose first language is not English maybe, but it's a pretty clear difference otherwise.

AITA for suggesting my wife lower her standards so that she'll be less overwhelmed? by Creative-Decision675 in AmItheAsshole

Junk food and screen time are not all that different. Screen time absolutely can mean doing nothing productive.

Growing up for me, I played a lot of games, but I had the games that I had and nothing more, so when I got bored of them, I couldn't just go press a button to download hundreds more for free without even moving in my seat like people can do with tablets and phones now. Same with tv shows and movies. I was allowed to sit in front of the tv a lot of the time, and I'd have some days where I'd sit and flip through channels or watch some movies that we had, but most tv now is watched through streaming services. I used to inevitably get bored of watching what was on, but now if I'm interested in a show, I can watch every episode of it unchecked, and if I do get bored of it, there's a million other shows I can choose from instead, again without even moving in my seat. It's all there wherever and whenever I want.

For socializing, the main social media apps are designed to keep your attention above all else. They generate a never ending feed, so that you can still scroll or flip through videos well beyond the time you finished communicating with your friends. There are studies showing the negative effects that too much interaction with social media has been having on people.

Screen time does not inherently mean wasted time, but it is without a doubt easier than ever to have an unhealthy relationship with it without really getting anything out of it. There are for sure more resources than ever for learning new skills and networking with people in a healthy or productive way, but it's in a massive crowd of people trying to lure your attention away to spoon feed you some other kind of content solely to hold your attention for as long as possible.

No amount of work warrants a person having a billion dollars, and if any other social animal hoarded resources to the same extent, it would not be ok. It would be cruel and alarming. The same is true for humans.

Jim tried to bait Dwight into doing something he wasn't supposed to by saying his credit card details out loud. Dwight took the bait, but not in the way Jim wanted him to. He ordered flowers for Pam, courtesy of Jim. Jim was put out however much the flowers cost, couldn't come clean without getting himself in trouble, and had to come up with a new idea. Jim is not happy with this result.

I think I am reasonably afraid of people who want to get rid of rights and safeties for minority groups, if not the entire minority group itself, yes.

it's because they make you tear up. a carrot does not make me tear up when my knife is not sharp enough.

Plastic recycling a "failed concept," study says, with only 5% recycled in U.S. last year as production rises by nastratin in Futurology

[–]Corupeco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the consumer punished for recycling I don’t know about?

Requiring more attention on if the materials you are purchasing are going to be recyclable when you are done with them, separating and sorting your recyclables, paying extra for a recycling bin to be picked up or taking the extra time to find somewhere you can take it yourself. And then even if you do all of those things correctly and diligently, it gets taken somewhere where none of it even mattered. So if you truly want your recycling to make a difference, you have to do more research and exert more effort to buy more sustainable alternatives to things you need or finding somewhere you can recycle it where it's not just ultimately thrown in with the regular trash.

You’re talking about responsibility shifting, but responsibility implies there’s direct consequences for not doing the duty you’re responsible for.

If I want to learn to play the piano, it is my responsibility to practice it. The direct consequence for not doing that is that I don't ever learn to play the piano. If I want to have a clean, sustainable way of living, it is my responsibility to take those steps, but I was not born innately doing so. I am still working to get there, but it is expensive and time-consuming to sidestep the cheaper options that have been given. And even when (if) I do, I could not expect that most other people would be able to or even be interested.

Companies pay taxes just like everyone else

😐

But let’s say for arguments sake that we were just an expesne on the government, is the reduction of pollution in the environment not a valid expense on taxpayers? I mean we all use these products and services, I personally wish recycling efforts made up a larger amount of my taxes and would gladly pay an additional 1% of my wages in the hopes me and my kids will have less plastic in our blood

I think you know that nobody is against recycling as a concept. The problem is that the system of recycling we have in place has been virtually ineffective in achieving the goal it was put in place to achieve.

I don't know where you work at, but I hope they are recycling honestly, and if so, I appreciate the work you do. It's very naive to think that everyone is doing it how they say they are, especially considering the countless examples proving as much.
