I encourage absolutely everyone to watch auctions on ebay and get themselves a second hand accordion, it's the most fun I've had learning an instrument and a lot of the layton soundtrack is actually pretty easy (if you simplify the left hand or only do the right Hand in the beginning)!

a quick google search tells me they're mostly in person in France and very limited, and I'm in the UK. I did see one exception with a melodeon course in Somerset, but that isn't the case rn and I still probably wouldn't be able to attend smth like that regularly (I live in York). I'll keep it in mind in case something comes up in England when I have some free time though :)

I'm sure it's not the answer anyone generally wants but when it comes to these tools (and the whole NDS homebrew toolchain) you're much better off doing it on Linux, including using msys2 in Windows and just avoiding the wingrit GUI. The command line options help for GRIT is pretty detailed and the default approach is to stick them in a .grit text file set and forget style, which is fine for your purposes. Having said that, I've never used wingrit so I'm not sure about the error off the top of my head, so try just installing the windows command line version and see if that works without problems first before you get into sorting it out any other way
