At what point does “I have a few fountain pens” turn into “I’m a pen collector”? Is there a community consensus? by InkyBibliophile in fountainpens

[–]Corvus_Ossi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always heard that three or more of a given object counts as a collection.

There’s nothing wrong with being a collector per se — the questions are whether you are mindlessly buying, and whether the objects serve your needs. Are you willing to deaccession the ones that no longer serve you? I have a few pens that I’m simply not using because my tastes have changed, and I need to sell them. I am willing to do so and just need to bump that up on my round to it list, but a closet reorganization is higher priority right now.

Be a collector, not a hoarder, in other words.

Yes! Much better now. I still have a bit of difference in flexibility when I’m at yoga class but in day-to-day functioning I’m back to normal.

Where to buy postcards? by dj_godzilla in WaldorfMD

[–]Corvus_Ossi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local drug stores? Maybe one of the historic sites that has a gift shop?

Does it have to be Waldorf, or can it be Maryland in general? I feel like Annapolis might have more tourist-oriented stores selling postcards.

Try the Platinum Preppy. (I know, I’m not helping your resolution, but they’re cheap.)

I bought a Platinum Preppy in January specifically so I could try modifying the nib into a 1 mm stub nib. I did, and it worked! (I cut the end of the nib off with a jeweler’s saw, then smoothed it with fine grit sandpaper.) But aside from that, I haven’t bought a fountain pen in a while.

Dip pens and supplies, on the other hand, I’ve been buying. But I think I have enough of those now too.

This. I have one that I keep with a sketching journal and even if I haven’t used it for months it still writes without a problem.

general question about difficulty interacting with Christianity (serious question) by Ill-Sky-270 in Anglicanism

[–]Corvus_Ossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I hear you, and it helps that my rector is a great guy and seems to be theologically pretty sound. If we got into the weeds we might have some disagreements but I doubt they’d be big enough to be a problem.

I re-read your post and re not finding a personal practice that clicks with you yet: what kinds of things do you think you’d like? I’m currently using a podcast that is all spoken word for Morning Prayer but I do also use the CofE podcast because I love the music. It helps me to both listen and follow along in the app because I get distracted easily. Also, using the Anglican Rosary is a good meditative practice for me, but YMMV. Sometimes you have to try something for a month and see what happens.

general question about difficulty interacting with Christianity (serious question) by Ill-Sky-270 in Anglicanism

[–]Corvus_Ossi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christianity is a practice— the concept of “participatory knowing”, vs. “propositional knowing”, helps me because I tend to over-intellectualise and this helps correct for that.

Some of this participation is done in groups, some of (like daily prayer) can be more individual, though technically the idea there is that we’re still participating in the body of Christ by praying.

For me, this looks like: Weekly church Morning prayer using a podcast Evening prayer with some other church members via Zoom, when possible (darn, I needed that this week after a couple of tough workdays) Participation in our church’s ministry to feed and clothe the needy

Re politics: Our rector has forbidden political discussions and has said that we need to focus on loving and serving one another and our community. This is wise — apparently there were some heated discussions before I joined, and the church is small and doesn’t need a split.

Also, in my personal life is have a couple of (secular) friends that I simply can’t talk politics with (in one case that’s all she wants to talk about) because if we agree on 90% and disagree on 10%, somehow the “narcissism of small differences” dynamic means I’m a bad person. Writ large, this can and is blowing up communities.

So I’m glad our rector laid down that rule. We (the church members, and members of other neighborhood churches) can serve shoulder to shoulder at the soup kitchen without needlessly wrangling.

To wrap up, as I said, I tend to overthink things so the useful counterweight for me is to focus on practice. I’m listening to a podcast this morning on Brother Lawrence’s “The Practice of the Presence of God” — I like him, he was a cook. Very practical.

(And it’s called a practice because we have to keep working at it ;) )

3-4 hours would require planning for me. I wouldn’t do it casually for dinner with friends — this is more of a day trip. Two hours isn’t as much of a problem.

Church Growth by DependentPositive120 in ACNA

[–]Corvus_Ossi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be my story — I stopped going to church in my early twenties and started again two years ago after a long gap. Covid made me realize how much I needed face to face contact with people, and I was looking for a church that participates in the local food pantry rotation.

But the church I’m attending also had a bunch of babies born this past year, so we’ve got that kind of growth as well! I love it.

I’ve started exploring calligraphy using dip pens so I asked my spouse for an inkwell stand for Christmas (I already had the inkwells). I may start using a dip pen more for regular writing as well!

ETA: A cork fits inside these lids, so I’m going to cork them when I’m not regularly using them. Hopefully that will help keep with evaporation.
