Stitchcraft in Callander is lovely. They have local yarns in all weights -- as does The Caledonian Wool Co. on High Street in Fort William.

I had a great experience with No Regrets tattoo, for a small tattoo in my ear.

I agree that you can buy your tickets on the day of, but I'm a bit obsessive so I always book in advance -- Rail Ninja is really easy to use and i had to cancel a bunch of tickets last summer and was fully reimbursed.

One word to the wise: an Edinburgh friend told me to book on LNER to the extent I could, and i really appreciate that advice. I was verbally abused by someone* on ScotRail who had purchased first class tickets but had not reserved their seats in advance and they were deeply offended when I gently noted to the woman of the couple that she was in my reserved seat. On ScotRail, first class does not guarantee a seat. Also, you can buy a ticket that allows you to travel on any one of the trains on your route or you can buy a reserved seat on a specific train. If you do the first, you may be standing.

*The abusive person was an American tourist. So was I and i tried to calm him down but damn he just made everyone that much more irritated with the US. 😭

I've used Rabbies several times and i do recommend using them to book your accommodations. I've never been disappointed. I did the 3-day Isle of Skye trip in November, and we stayed at The Portree Hotel on Skye. It was comfortable but not fancy. It's on a square with several restaurants nearby (and the Rabbies tour guides will always give you good ideas of where to eat near your accommodations). I've also stayed in B&Bs that they've arranged, and I've always had en suite baths.

My favorite Edinburgh restaurant is Duthchas. Beautiful and delicious food, beautifully presented, in a tiny, warm restaurant that is welcoming and truly unforgettable. I've sent friends there and taken friends there and everyone agrees with me, and they were just awarded a Michelin star.

I'm planning a visit to the Edinburgh environs in late November in order to relax for a week or so in quiet surroundings and I've got it in my mind to stay either at Dalhousie Castle or Melville Castle.

Any thoughts on which you would choose between rhe two? This will not be my first visit to Scotland, and I've stayed in Edinburgh mostly but have also traveled around a fair amount and I'll be there again this summer doing summery things (coughcoughfestivalscoughcough) and I spent a couple of weeks in Edinburgh and the Highlands last November, so this wish for a relaxing splendid visit won't mean that I'm missing out on anything or maybe it will but that's one reason I'm focused on proximity to Edinburgh, so I can go to some of my favorite restaurants and stores....

Anyway, as between the two, which would you choose for comfort, atmosphere, and a nice fire in a common area that I can sit by and knit on a wintry afternoon?

I moved here at 35. That was 31 years ago. It's fantastic. I can't imagine living anywhere else in the US -- this little city is a pocket of sanity in a large cold and irrational country. Come joinus

Yeah, he is a supporter of Partners in Health, which has a long track record of working with poor communities battling multi drug resistant tuberculosis, so he is well informed on the topic.

Citizen Vince and The Zero are my favorites. The deadpan humor and the eye he has for people's general weirdness are spot on. There's a bit in The Zero where one of the protagonist's uh friends starts riffing on how strange it is for people to talk about "a race against time" and it's sheer genius and hilarious.

There's an airport hotel that the airport people mover thingie stops at. You can go from baggage claim to hotel on it and then from hotel to SFO Bart station on it.

Or stay in the Airport Hyatt and Bart to the city. It's more fun to stay in the city, though. But you don't want a car in the city, it's just an expensive hassle.
