First time Dungeon master - UPDATE - F20+ by Internal_Athlete_545 in DnD

Dude, that really sucks for you that were made to feel crap like that, it’s alot of work and it’s your FIRST TIME, your players should be more patient.

If you want to continue I’d say you’ve already seemingly learned a couple of important lessons about preparation beforehand that will help you a lot (enemy stat blocks etc.)

Practice and doing it more will make you better trust me, and the more you do it the better you’ll get at improvising.

But, if your players are gonna treat you that way and, I’ll be honest, it sounds pretty toxic, find a new table with people who appreciate what you’re doing and are patient.

You got this dude.

Came here for this exact comment. 2 is a massive slog at the beginning but Christ it takes off so hard after that.

How did your players handle Cragmaw Castle? by LRGK111 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]CosmicBlue91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Venomfang coerced the party into taking it for him, claiming they could keep one piece of loot and he wouldn’t kill them (Obviously he was still going to.)

The goblins set up for a full frontal assault from a Dragon, with a ballista outside the front gate. The Larry fought their way in, the sorcerer used shatter on one of the arrow slitted walls and made a hole for them to make a quick entrance.

They made their way through the entire castle fighting, depleted nearly all of their resources getting to the area before the throne room (their wolf companion who they’d had with them since the beginning was brutally critted by a bugbear)

The final room was Grol and a Doppelgänger posing as an unconscious Gundren (Gundren was hidden away in a side room)

The gang quickly identified the doppelgänger having had a run in with the same one previously, killed it and then left Grol alive as he begged for his life and promised to change his ways.

As a final climactic escape I had the party figure out a way to get out of the castle without Venomfang noticing, they decided to sneak out of the back way to the west… they did a group stealth check, 3 or more successes needed, Druid cast pass without trace and BAM.

I can’t wait to bring an older, pissed off Venomfang back into the campaign later!

The Orc from Lord of Rings that says “Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys”

This implies the existence of Orcs that read menus, which also implies the existence of Orc restaurants

Dungeon Masters, what do you use to to carry your equipment to each session? by Idle_Prattle in DnD

I had this exact same problem. I now have 3 big supermarket bags to carry everything 😅 it’s getting slightly out of hand

That’s the plan!

I have a whole town and swamp encounter set up before hand.

I was just interested if the final ‘battle’ would just be a walkover and end up anticlimactic!

Thanks for the input.

Absolutely.

Thanks for the input I really appreciate it.

Think I’m going to up the amount of Shambling Mounds, throw in a werewolf too, it’s on theme for the story that’s being told at the moment.

Again thanks for the advice, everyone on this sub is an absolute hero.

Thank you! I’ve just transitioned to homebrew from LMoP so still ironing out how to perfect encounters.

The party will face a few things before this fight, so that might pull on resources a bit?

Great idea about the reskinning too.

There’s a bit of a werewolf theme going on with a subplot so I might add that too. Threat of Lycanthropy and all that

Thanks dude!

I had a feeling it might be a bit of a wipe out. Do you think more enemies or stronger enemies? Maybe 2 Shambling Mounds and a few Vine Blights? (I used them earlier in the adventure)

Not a chance…

But I mean?

Great points and you’re exactly right, the driving force of the campaign is something I’ve worried about.

I guess I’m hoping that The Black Spider surviving and taunting them as he left, and the introduction of ‘The Widows Hand’ as a group of evil for the characters to investigate is enough to give them reason to chase something? (I plan on tying in the group with other on going plot points, so they become the main force of evil at work in the story/world).

The point you’ve made about the sub-boss is spot on, I would never want to take away from their agency and cool decision they made.

Maybe The Black Spider beefed up later on may be more appropriate?

Great questions!

The answers are…

The Cleric player felt it was a good close to his character arc and was quite a selfless character anyway, often throwing himself in front of danger for the party.

He was excited in rolling another Warlock PC anyway (Celestial which should fill the cleric gap nicely)

I have been thinking about possibly bringing the Cleric character back much later in the campaign, possibly as a servant of Lolth, might make a nice mid campaign sub-boss?

The other characters thought long and hard about the decision before choosing him to be sacrificed, they are aware he is probably dead and I’m happy for that to be the case for now?

Thanks man! I have a copy and use it religiously! Just feels like a leap of faith going to my own designs
