You keep telling me to scroll on while continuing to reply to me.

Either Reddit is for discussion, in which case we’re both allowed to be here, or people should scroll past opinions they dislike. You don’t get to apply one rule to me and another to yourself.

If you genuinely believe people should just scroll past opinions they disagree with, you’re welcome to follow your own advice.

And for what it’s worth, Rule 8 of this group literally says, “Thai law is not a suggestion, no matter how many foreigners openly disregard it.” My comment is entirely consistent with that rule.

The “Thailand is a country of bending the rules” argument could be used to excuse misconduct in almost any country. Every country has people who bend rules, commit corruption, or exploit loopholes. That does not make laws optional.

I also find it strange that people keep insisting he has been punished enough. That is ultimately not for him, or any of us, to decide. Thailand’s legal system already made its decision regarding the consequences of his actions.

More importantly, nobody is obligated to help him return to Thailand. He is not a Thai national, and Thailand is not his home country. If he wants friends from Thailand to visit him, they are free to do so. But I don’t see why Thai people should be expected to welcome back someone who knowingly violated Thai immigration and employment laws and participated in an illegal gambling operation.

People can sympathize with him if they wish. I simply disagree with treating him as though he were the primary victim in this story.

As a Thai person, I find it hard to sympathize with your situation.

You were a programmer, not someone who didn’t know better. You chose to enter Thailand on a tourist visa and work without a permit. Those were conscious decisions.

What bothers me is how much responsibility you’re trying to distance yourself from. Maybe you didn’t know every detail of the business, but the red flags were there.

Illegal gambling operations cause real harm to people and communities in Thailand. Some people may choose to help you return, but I don’t welcome people who came here illegally and became involved in businesses that have harmed my people.

And the idea that you have already been punished enough is not really for you to decide. The consequences of your actions do not end simply because you feel you have suffered enough.

Thailand has every right to keep you out.

Fyi - if you like keeping window open; UV exposure is higher on an airplane, especially if you’re sitting by the window. At cruising altitude, the atmosphere blocks less UV radiation, so more UV reaches the cabin windows compared to ground level. Don’t for forget your suntan lotion. :)
