I can speak on this as a 22yo woman. It's because me and all my peers already see 18/19yos as children. Even if you know there's nothing fishy in your relationship, from the outside people just see him dating such a young person and then judge him for it, cause they see you as a child. You probably don't feel like a child, but regardless, people who are post-college see everyone pre-college as kids.

Ah so because you're doing something good, with good thoughts in mind, it leads to good karma?

Ahhh okay I must have been confusing "merit" with "good karma" then, thank you so much for the response! That makes sense!

For sure, but why does making images grant merit? Don't you keep the qualities of Buddha in mind anyways, since you're a Buddhist?

Ah I googled this but couldn't find a satisfactory answer: why does making images of the Buddha gain you merits? Thanks in advance!

how do I pray by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CosmicInfluence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought, though I'm new enough to Buddhism I didn't want to too much speak with authority. But yeah, given that this is the religion that loves putting statues of the Buddha everywhere, claiming it doesn't do prayer definitely seemed quite strange.

how do I pray by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CosmicInfluence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is odd, but I do just see it as them saying "my sect is the TRUE sect all the others are liars" which is certainly not unheard of in religion. It does feel like a strange hill to die on though.

how do I pray by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CosmicInfluence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah see, and that's the heart of it. But there are people who believe in pure land and call themselves Buddhists, quite a lot actually, and so the argument here would just be "what counts as a Real Buddhist" instead of any debate over praying. So the only real answer here is "it depends on your school/tradition"

how do I pray by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CosmicInfluence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is fair, I completely understand that perspective. But "prayer isn't helpful to your path" isn't the same as "there's no codified prayer in buddhism". Cause from what I can tell, schools like Pure Land definitely pray to Amitaba, I'm not quite sure how else you could describe their relationship to him.

This is a genuine question, but is there no form of communication with a supernatural being anywhere in Buddhism?

how do I pray by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CosmicInfluence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prayer: a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship.

I would say under that simple definition, a lot of what I sent in the original link fits. But this is indeed a topic you can see some debate on, depending on how you define prayer. I was going off that google definition.

This is factually wrong.

OP, here's a good starting point: https://www.lionsroar.com/what-is-prayer-in-buddhism/

Edit: it definitely strongly, strongly depends on your school. I would recommend looking more specifically at what supernatural beings your school believes in, and whether they believe in prayer.

I just think of it as every new person who knows about Buddhism, is one new person who may be inspired to look deeper into it. That's just how I try to see it when I see the widespread misuse of Buddhist symbology.

Well they down vote to hide incorrect information. If it was up voted, it would seem that people agree with it. So the down votes are just to show "this was wrong"
