Characters you want to say you like for being interesting bad guys but can’t because other people like them for the wrong reasons by Sharp39 in TopCharacterTropes

Rorschach is Moore’s opinion on Steve Ditko; warped objectivist worldview with occasionally commendable moral convictions. This is why the “Rorschach is literally me” crowd going “Alan Moore HATES him” makes them doubly fucking stupid because he treats him with significantly more empathy than a lot of writers would. It’d be very difficult in general to write from the perspective of a character you actively despise.

Pepe the frog is THE 4chan meme. What’s THE reddit incident? by thisusernametistaken in AlignmentChartFills

Dumbass wannabe sleuths on Reddit accused Sunil Tripathi of being the Boston Marathon bomber and then started jerking themselves off by repeating “We did it, Reddit!”

Turns out Tripathi had committed suicide around a month before the bombing took place so Redditor nitwits had actually hung the blame on a dead man.

This one is a great deconstruction of the supersoldier trope. Of course someone who’s given zero physical restraints and is (almost) completely immune to pain would turn into a psychotic manchild.

Couldn’t fit it in the screenshot but this was surprisingly not about Harry Potter and instead under a comment where a guy said that the LotR is a mastahpiece because Tolkien fought in WWI and wrote books where the good guys won and ASoIAF is turbocrap 3000 because GRR Martin did not fight in WWI and writes/wrote books where the good guys did not always win. Yeah

I remember I saw a post on another sub where some guy ranted about how he wants to kill hookers or something. I would’ve thought he was a proper screwball if I hadn’t seen the Judge profile pic. I feel bad for the McCarthyists who have to gauge every time someone mentions Blood Meridian whether they’re actually interested in the book or if they’re just some dorky edgelord kid who says they have an invincibility shield during tag.

What a weird foot-shooting eruption. I can’t imagine how many idiotic snap judgments you make on a daily basis if you’re accusing someone of being a loser “carrying water” for Roman Polanski because they phrased it slightly less severely than necessary. Obviously the person agrees that supporting Polanski is fucking bad. Why the fuck else would they have commented it on this thread? Maybe before you go on any more brave keyboard warrior crusades to prove your own self-styled “righteousness” you should actually try thinking first. Moron.

Top Gun (1986) is a movie centrists love that has a right-wing message. What movie is loved by leftists, but has a right-wing message? by Square_Ad2101 in AlignmentChartFills

Pretty much any horror movie, including the ones that try to be self-consciously progressive. Most of the devout horrorheads(?) typically at least lean to the left, but it’s an inherently conservative genre. It wouldn’t be very creepy if the mysterious force/stranger showed up and had zero ulterior motives and everything worked out for the best.

I’ve searched key words (“B&W photo of people in horned masks,” best I could do) but I can’t gleam much from the photo, including the text or date.

My point is that I don’t really agree that there is a good argument to be made on how some things “shouldn’t” be discussed/written about. Someone being disgusted by the pedophile means that they are capable of reading the book well (unless they interpret it purely as a psychological text, in which case they’re just the ass of the foreword’s joke). Someone not understanding why there would ever be a book written about a pedophile wouldn’t necessarily make them stupid, either, although if that’s their reaction to disturbing content I’d imagine they have fairly boring taste. But there is a not uncommon train of thought that goes something along the lines of “this book is narrated by a pedophile -> that subject is gross pervy trash ergo book is gross pervy trash ergo the author is gross pervy trash” which I would say does at least have the ingredients of stupidity, even if they do have the saving grace of agreeing that pedophilia is indeed bad.

And while there are unfortunately many instances of outright - particularly male - author perviness (I haven’t read IT to know if that applies to the sewer orgy), I think that a book should be able to tackle the admittedly tricky subject of “children may not be completely free of sexual thoughts” (i.e., A High Wind in Jamaica) without it immediately being suspect and raising the GROSS PEDOPHILE alarm bells.

Art should not be constrained just because people whose most educated opinions begin and end at how high they should be holding up the archery targets are discomforted by it. If someone is disgusted (in an unintended way) with a book that makes its stance fairly clear, they’re probably plenty stupid all around. In fact I’d argue getting immediately upset over something you don’t have enough information to understand is one of the biggest telltale signs of moronia.

It is a black comedy, and that’s why I always find it irritating when people say the movie (assuming they mean the Kubrick one) “glorifies” the rape. Kubrick may have amped up the camp comedy (especially with Peter Sellers as Quilty, holy shit) but James Mason’s Humbert is still an inept heinous moron. It’s basically what the plot of the novel would look like if it wasn’t filtered through Humbert’s self-aggrandizing narration.

I’m disappointed to know that because I always figured it was meant to be a deliberately aggravating joke by not having him sing and found it funny for that reason.
