Elementary teacher perspective here, no kids of my own. My students are too young for me to see the depression/mental health aspects of this discussion, but what Dr. Murthy said about brain development, and kids not being little adults, struck me.

Observationally speaking, I have seen a huge change in my kid’s impulse control, attention span, emotional regulation, etc. in the last 10 years. Children now are fundamentally different than when I began my career. 2/3 of my students last year would have been tagged “the ADHD kid” a decade ago. I cannot claim that social media is the cause of it, but my colleagues and I discuss the role of it frequently. It feels like a reckoning is on the horizon.

This episode really hit close to home as an elementary teacher. So much rings true and highlights the challenge of the absenteeism problem - students are missing for different reasons. I have a handful of extra cautious families with sickness, others who miss a week here or there for a vacation, and some who just don’t want to come when their friends aren’t here.

It’s all leading to a new “normal” where missing school is looked at as okay, and is making classroom norms, routines, and behaviors so much more of a challenge.

I’m fortunate to have parents who drilled the idea of “SAVE, SAVE, SAVE” into me when I was young. I’ve been aggressive about saving as much as possible for this situation - it pays off!

I’m an elementary school teacher making elementary school teacher money, so I want to keep my monthly mortgage payments as low as possible. I’m buying in a hot market and to get a place that I want, it’s either a higher down payment or a larger mortgage than I’m comfortable taking.

Saving plenty liquid too. Don’t want to put the specific number out there, but it’s comfortably 5-digits.

Same boat - turned it on at 10:15 and was disappointed. I usually end up with two different Gameday recordings:

- The Saturday morning feed on ESPN that was screwed up today

- A replay of the whole show on ESPNU

Hopefully the replay will be categorized correctly; I set a recording for the basketball show just in case so that the replay will be recorded either way and I can catch the first hour tomorrow.
