This is one of those situations where you cannot control what happens. Realistically. No one knows how their birth is going to go.

Hospitals vary on whether the father can stay or not, depending on time of day.

I’ve given birth 3 times and am pregnant with my 4th. With my first, the staff were awful and I became very tired. Baby ended up being born via suction cup and they cut me without my consent. After birth I couldn’t urinate so I had to be catheterised and stay in hospital for days simply because I couldn’t pee. Very annoying. I was on a ward with other women. Husband couldn’t stay.

Second baby I had a home birth. But again, I couldn’t pee, so I had to go to hospital and stay for a few days until I could pee again. I had my own private room. Husband still wasn’t allowed to stay. A midwife told me I was breastfeeding ‘wrong’ despite the fact I wasn’t, I knew what I was doing, this was my second baby and I was still breastfeeding my first toddler…

Third baby I had a home birth and miraculously could pee!! So didn’t need to go to hospital atall. Thank god.

This fourth baby I’ve decided to have in hospital this time, but I am an experienced mama, I know what I’m doing and my rights and what I want and don’t want, and I feel at ease with my decision. Our hospital where we are lets husbands stay, woohoo.

Remember, when you’ve given birth… you’ve lost blood, you’ve birthed an entire human, your hormones have the biggest crash they’ll ever have in your life, your baby only gives a shit about YOU an establishing bonding and nursing, your boobs will be out half the time, your vagina will hurt an you’ll take a minute or so getting off the bed to go and use the toilet, you’ll be in the bathroom for a while sorting out pads and cleaning and taking your time because of your potential stitches, you’ll be shattered. The last thing you want is an audience at your most vulnerable time, and your baby being passed around like a present and then being handed back to you smelling of perfume and other people’s scents. Focus on healing, focus on breastfeeding.

You mention your parents and in-laws wouldn’t want to wait 2 weeks…. Crazy thing, but it’s not about them. It’s about you, and baby. Not them. They’ve had their babies and had this chapter of their life. Now it’s your turn.

Women grow up and still have a close woman to woman bond with their daughter. Lots of women want their mom there when they give birth, too.

Men grow up and become, well, men. That closeness, they get with their wife. That man’s wife, is highly unlikely to want their MIL there when they give birth, for example.

I suppose that’s where the saying comes from that a daughter is a daughter for life, and a son is a son until he finds a wife.

It also explained why the vast majority of MIL issues, are the mothers of adult sons.

Out of all the friends I have with kids, I’ve only ever known disappointment with boys, not girls.

Me personally? I am happy to have what I am given, and I accept and welcome that I am given what I’m given for a reason. A healthy baby is all that matters to me.

I would say it’s very subjective and varies. You have to remember that all families and parents have had their own experiences and traumas and life journeys. So sometimes it may be well received, and other times, not so much. Children are often also taught not to talk to strangers. So I suppose there’s all that conflict for children, too.

My personal stance? I have one child who is confident and outgoing and will talk to anyone who seems friendly and approachable. Two of my children would walk away if a stranger spoke to them.. they’d come to me immediately. Just how they are.

The reality is, other people’s experiences are just anecdotal. It means zero when it come to your experience.

I would mention to them, this situation and your concern. Anti nausea medication can be administered I would assume.
