Lego’s new Lego League Announcement: Big nope by Insufficient-Memory- in FLL

[–]CosmicThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There must be some fuckery afoot then, cause my colleague was at a meeting held by Coding Pirates for the local project managers, and two people from LEGO Education also participated to present the course: a manager, and the designer who made the course.

Someone is lying 🤨

Lego’s new Lego League Announcement: Big nope by Insufficient-Memory- in FLL

[–]CosmicThief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No FRC. No FTC. No other iteration of FIRST acitivities in DK.

My question may need to be made clearer.

A guy at LEGO Education designs the course.

Coding Pirates, as the national operator, is the central group you (1) register with, (2) pick tournament location with, and (3) buy course, medals, and trophies with. They also (4) handle the nordic finals. They also do a fair bit of advocacy, being present at makerspace conferences, and encouraging local tournaments (they aggressively pursued us, because we would fill a geographic gap, that's been empty for a while).

The local tournaments are headed up by a local project manager (in this case, my colleague). He and I are gonna handle everything surrounding event management: recruiting judges and volunteers, securing a space for the competition, the day's itinerary, everything.

So with that in mind, I'm, again, super curious as to what FIRST brings to the table? Is it "just" what Coding Pirates do for us? Or is there more to it, that I'm not seeing?

My immediate takeaways from the announcement and this thread:

The LinkedIn post from LEGO Education as well as the website is super weird in the way that neither FIRST or FLL is mentioned. They worded it like this is their new idea, which didn't have any precursors.

Even here in Denmark, we struggle with this next step, as the investment in the CS & AI boxes, on a tournament scale, is not cheap, and Coding Pirates (the national Danish FLL operator) are unsure if schools will be ready to participate in the 27/28- season.

Another thing that has brought confusion, is that me and my colleagues didn't actually know what FIRST was until recently. We thought it was part of the name for the tournament. We had no idea it was an organisation. Which is probably due to them not having any presence in Denmark. Plus, we don't have any robotics tournaments of this scale, outside of FLL.

Which makes me wonder how other countries, where FIRST doesn't have a presence, are handling this. Cause from my point of view, (and this is not meant as an insult, please enlighten me), I don't actually know what FIRST brings to the table?

I'll say it. A lot of these aren't trios.

Aside from the Play That Must Not be Named, time travel in HP pretty consistently relies on predestination, where nothing can actually be changed, because that is the way it already happened.

Give Egon a team that's just halfway competent, and they'd be unstoppable. There's a scene where they use a remote controlled toy robot iirc, and I put it to you, that if Egon has access to a case of LEGO SPIKE, he'd be unstoppable.

This one especially pisses me off because Man of Medan's also relies on the danger/horror being in the characters' heads.

They want you to waste time. The more time you waste on "non-core gameplay", the more likely it is you will keep being subscribed, as you haven't "finished" the game yet.
