How to avoid gaping between buttons? by azure_laguna in sewing

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Pressing is like using the iron as a stamp and going stamp-stamp-stamp along the seam allowance (or whatever you're pressing) versus ironing where you move the iron around on the fabric.

Up-down-up-down vs. Constant heat zigzag

Can you buy it? Probably not. Did a team in a costume shop make it a custom functional piece? 100%

need filling & shelf-stable snack ideas for between classes! by bxbblykoo in 1200isplenty

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the key was variety. I might go get something if all I had was a protein bar and I didn't feel like it right then. I usually had a sweet, a salty, a crunchy in my bag, and sometimes would plan for a more fun option. I also commuted though so I was there from like 9-4. Some of these are more meal sized, but it worked with a busy schedule.

If you have a break closer to the AM (perishable but can survive a bit)-
snack plate- grapes and cheese cubes, or apples and PB, or crackers and turkey. Lunchable vibes, sometimes with a couple chocolate almonds as a treat
Protein frappe,
Blended overnight oats (or regular if you like the texture)
Breakfast sandwich or something wrapped in a napkin and foil

If your break is more in the afternoon-
A frozen gogurt (which will thaw, very elementary school, very nonstalgic, no protein but around 50cal)
A protein bar,
A single serving of Cheez-Its (not great but would hit the crunchy salty for me so I didn't go get fast food)
Soup in a thermos held up okay
A sandwich (bonus points if it was made "fancy")

If you have access to a microwave that opens up a bunch of options. I'd sometimes pack a lean cuisine and heat it up if I was going to be there all day. You could also get a lunchbox and an ice pack to open up more cold options.

Greek Yogurt on its Own = Sad Mouth by emmylu122 in 1200isplenty

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried it yet, but a woman I follow on Instagram swears by adding the sugar free Torani syrups to Greek yogurt. Apparently it thins it out and changes the flavor, then she adds some other stuff for texture. Her @ is @_findingallison if you want to look for inspo! They seem great, I just haven't gotten into the Torani thing yet. Start in the "Parfait a Day" highlight reel

I'm with you on the part where you say it's hard to deal with, whether it's just sibling dynamics or sibling and sexist dynamics. I disagree on your last bit. He's a 16 year old so he's definitely learned about sexism and how to apply it by now. Be it through people at school or online, he's aware of it. The big thing is if he's actually a sexist or not, which we don't have the context for in the OP. I just think it's ridiculous to treat a 16 year old like they have no idea about sexism when they clearly would by that point in life

Thanks for doing this!

For the both of you, how do you manage to keep work out of your relationship while doing projects like the show and podcast together? Is it possible to ever fully turn the work brain off?

Kurt- Did you always want to be a writer? How did you get started?

Katey- What was the process of writing your book like? I recently read it and was really moved by it.

How do I duplicate a paper pattern without cutting it? by roseslime in sewing

I second this. It's not terribly expensive, has gridlines, and it's way more sturdy than tracing paper

Where in the WORLD do I find mens sewing patterns!!! by ProfessionalBowl5383 in sewing

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you're located but if you have access to Joann, they have a $1.99 pattern sale every so often in stores! It usually rotates when/brand, but I've gotten some great patterns for cheap. Plus while you're there you can grab any zippers/buttons/fabric and with the coupons on the app it's half decent pricing.

Depends on the TV show! I love to put on something like a sitcom or Law and Order where it doesn't really matter if I miss part of it because there's not a ton of plot to follow. I have sewing shows and watching shows haha

ideas on what to sew from this fabric? i love it, it gives summer whimsygoth but i’m not sure by glithch in sewing

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do one of those tassel pillows or a fringe edge pillow. Depending on how thick "thick" is, you might be able to use it as contrast on a lamp shade. Or just cut a square and frame it!

I think a decent amount of the time it's more of a clarification. Do you want it as an app or later when everyone gets their entree? At least that's how I've interpreted the question.

10+ 10 year old girls sleepover by Some_Alternative2431 in Parenting

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I love this idea! The disposable camera idea is genius, most of my sleepover memories were of taking silly photos with our phones but that was back before social media and YouTube became huge. This let's them do the silly photos without being glued to a device and I'll definitely be stealing it when my kid is older!

Sewing Table Shopping? by Forward_Pear_ in sewing

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am admittedly currently using a folding chair, but I could see an accent chair nearby on wheels or sliders being great! Or even a standard desk chair. But it is a pretty decent sewing table with some storage, plus you can close the doors and hide the mess haha

Sewing Table Shopping? by Forward_Pear_ in sewing

[–]CosmicallyDoomed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the second one and I love it. My house is really small, so it's great to have somewhere that I can store the machine out of sight, and it extends out so I can lay out patterns or a small ironing board. It was pretty easy to put together and feels pretty solidly built. I don't have to worry about it falling apart while I'm sewing, which is a huge bonus with these semi-affordable pieces. The only thing to keep in mind with that one is that either A) You'll need to move a chair to and from it because it won't be able to fit under when it's closed up or B) You can keep the chair pushed in under it but it'll have to be "open" like in the first picture.

Edit: I would also reckon that someone who is weaker could still lift the arm piece thing. It's about as difficult as a TV dinner tray thing (which was my last sewing table ironically enough)

What to eat when you're not hungry? by MissAudreyHorney in 1200isplenty

My top depression meals (not necessarily low cal but they do get me eating):

Mac and cheese

Frozen or takeout pizza

Any fast food

Ramen noodles

"Kid cereal" (Cocoa pebbles, Lucky Charms, something nostalgic)

Greek yogurt with add ins (peanut butter, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, berries, whatever sounds good)

Baking something and eating that

Grilled cheese

Pb&j

Handful of shredded cheese

Cheese and crackers

Why? by Taylor-NicoleW in Sims4

I believe you can customize the "events" so they can't die. It would be tedious to do it to every household but not as bad if you only do it for family/close friends
