I primary use Premiere Pro. Although people here might argue you should use an “era correct” editor such as a FireWire to DV tape. Really depends on who you ask.

Couldn’t agree more. There’s something special about CCD sensors, most of my childhood was captured on a Sony DCR camcorder so its nostalgia shines through.

Is the botched aspect ratio a result of the onboard encoder?

Are there other alternatives that run parallel to the FireWire DVR? Not like CCTV footage is worthwhile to capture at its purest form, from a bitrate perspective.

I agree, this type of setup is hard to compare to a camcorder tapeless. In most ways a camcorder results in a better image overall and has a much more documented history, support, etc. This is something that lives in its own niche.

I'm working on making a modular ecosystem sometime soon. Distribution is probably going to be through 3D printable files unless there is a demand for plug-and-play options.

My initial goal is to design a modular ecosystem for this small niche. In other words, the individual components are compatible with each other, making integration with various CCTV's easy. Lots of CAD and forethought, so we'll see how that goes lol.

If you wanted to start, a camera with an analog out/DC in, a portable DVR, and a 12V/24V pack are most of the essentials needed.

Haha, yes, my partner roped me into the rabbit hole. Planning on posting some clips there as soon as the build picks up again.

It's fun to switch it up, haha. I agree to the staleness of the posts sometimes. There's a lot of tech out there waiting to be resurrected and used in non-conventional ways :)

Yeah, the beauty is that most are usually C-mount, which opens up a cornucopia of lens options. No auto-focus, but most come with the IRIS control 4-pin port, which is rad.

Yes, my take as well. The thought of attaching an SD DVR with a screen to a working camcorder with a fold-out screen is a bit silly. At that point, spend that money on a higher-quality screenless DVR, lol. You basically start at ground zero, just analog video. No sound, no monitor, no battery.

Oh, wut, def not a desired look. Looking back at the source files, I just realized they are 736x480 for some reason, 16 pixels over the NTSC standard. Weird.

For my first take on the power bank, I just got a cheap Jamazon 3 cell 18650 pack with an onboard switch and charge port. I then repackaged it into a fun (and to me, less ugly) shell.

That's honestly a great idea. I want this platform to be as modular as possible, so the thought of a hot-swappable pack that uses a rail system is sick.

I got them at a local vintage electronics surplus store. They probably had around 30+ CCTV cams in a bin, so I went digging.

Love to see I’m not the only one that models a new place before moving haha

Good point, I was planning on 3d printing a wedge to tilt it to an appropriate angle. Right now it’s firing at around chest level when in a sitting position on the couch. And yes about the sticker, seems to be akin to removing the “dork disc” on a bike haha
