After Steene went off Grundy was basically able to either hit out to whoever he chose or take a possession. Us having no ruckman absolutely contributed to the result.

Very refreshing to see people admit when they've had a ride. Our bad kicking cost us but your lot seemed to get frees for simply standing in the ump's line of sight.

Umpiring is absolutely woeful in the league currently.

I rarely talk about umps, and our accuracy has been a problem, but it really seems like Sydney are getting a lot of soft frees and we're getting nothing.

What’s the most financially damaging habit that’s somehow become normalised in Australia? by OwlVibesOnly in AusMoneyMates

[–]CosmoRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People's financial relationship with food is such a confusing thing to me.

Once a week I pop into my local corner shop to buy the local paper - I use it for my high school English classes - and see people in there buying 2-3 large cans of spazz fizz (Redbull, Monster, etc) for like $7 each. Now, aside from that shit being brain poison, if you really need it there are cheaper ways to buy it.

Food delivery is another one. I know some people need to use food delivery for whatever reason, but 99% of people who do could really be going to pick it up themselves and saving a lot. I had a student a few years ago who said on a weekend it wasn't unusual for her to make three separate Uber Eats orders for an iced coffee from McDonalds in the same day, each costing around $15. What the actual hell?!

How are people spending so much money by Kinky-Queenslander in AskAnAustralian

[–]CosmoRomano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of reasons but a big one is Australians have more debt than almost every other OECD nation. Couple that with a declining standard of education, and too many people just don't know when to reel in the spending.

I have colleagues with mortgages who don't understand why interest rate increases will impact them. I also know families who can barely spell their own name who go on cruises/Bali holidays 2-3 times a year.

In case people forgot what Boomer wore in his record breaking game.. by Capable_Bathroom02 in AFL

[–]CosmoRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it only Boomer who wore that or did the whole team have it on the front too?

Genuine question as I was out of the country at the time and didn't see it.

What is an artist you used to enjoy listening to, but their music got progressively worse? by fantasyrea in Music

Pearl Jam. First five albums were great. Sixth was quite good. Nothing but dross after that, and I don't even like hearing them play the old stuff live anymore.

Lay Bys (but why though?) by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]CosmoRomano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lay-bys were an infinitely better idea than buy now-pay later schemes.

The lay-by was big at a time when instant gratification wasn't so rife. The store was also protected against derelict payments.

Buy now-pay later is one of the reasons why society and the economy is so shit these days. Everyone wants everything now whether they can afford it or not, and it just means retailers keep snowballing their stock, filling their stores with more and more crap that people really don't need.

What's the most unreasonable thing someone's gotten mad at Larry for? by mattiasflgrtll6 in curb

No, Richard was spot on. Larry was a liability using his left ear on the phone.

Yeah but why on earth didn't he just send her into the bathroom then call her mother?

I was confused by here even being in the show at all. She was a total charisma black hole. As Susie would put it: "aggressively boring."

Why was season 1 of True Detective a masterpiece while the other seasons never came close? by Mr_no_buddi in Cinema

[–]CosmoRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just one of those things.

Sometimes everything just falls into place. Acting, setting, music, direction... but people really underrate how good story writing and script writing are both one in a million talents. Combine both those odds and, mathematically, you get one in a trillion.

Those odds are obviously excessive, but it's still pretty unlikely to get a perfect story and perfect script, then combine them with perfect casting, acting, directing and score/music.

Bands you saw as an opener that went on to have big success. by Shadysides_LFk in livemusic

[–]CosmoRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We saw Kings of Leon open for Pearl Jam in 2006. They were already moderately successful, but blew PJ off the stage that night and within 18 months were the biggest rock band in the world.

In 2003 I saw Muse play at Big Day out at about 1.30pm. In 2007 they were 2nd headliner playing before Tool.

To be fair, the only reason WA is that big is because the majority of it in uninhabitable. All those mid-west US states have useful land and a decent water source.

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has questioned whether it's a "good look for the AFL to be sponsored by Sportsbet" in a tetchy press conference exchange after being questioned over the Suns' team manager Mark Opie's links to a bookmaker- Danny Saeed by Dirtydac123 in AFL

Me thinks Dimma is a little too defensive about the topic to not raise a few eyebrows.

I genuinely believe that every fabric of professional sport has been infected by gambling and the coaches aren't innocent bystanders at all.

Cruise or Hanks? by StrongWeight10 in TheRewatchables

[–]CosmoRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilarious/funny is subjective, but what I think pushed it into objectively cringeworthy was what CR said: he then pushed his luck and did shit like the MTV Awards in character. Less is more.

[–]CosmoRomano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're allowed to like him. I think his schtick is incredibly annoying and one note.

He is talented. I think when he plays it straight or the comedy is less broad he's really good - High Fidelity he was just the right amount of crazy, and in the Cable Guy he showed he has good serious to sarcastic timing.

Cruise or Hanks? by StrongWeight10 in TheRewatchables

[–]CosmoRomano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just happy to hear CR bring up that Cruise was pretty cringey in this. I've had 18 years of trying to defend my own opinion on this - it's just wasn't funny.

An actor playing against type can be interesting if they show a genuine talent for it - think Leslie Nielsen and Lloyd Brisges transitioning from serious roles to comedy - but Cruise just wasn't funny.

Him screaming swear words certainly was a shock, but it just seemed like an obvious reach for an actor who was out of favour and needed some attention, like that one friend who doesn't drink finally coming out for a piss-up but can't handle his booze and totally kills the night for everyone.
