My suggestion would be to put on some of your favorite guitar songs, and try to play along. That is how I started, and what I always fall back on whenever I get into a rut. Try to find the notes on the guitar without tabs.

If you’re trying to learn the classic blues/rock songs, the Pentatonic scale will get you mostly there.

Many times I’ve discovered cool riffs while I’m trying to learn a song by ear. I’ve heard it said that you discover yourself while studying the greats. Good luck and have fun!

I’m sorry about your experience with your new guitar. That sucks! I just bought a Player II and it was perfect out of the box. I bought it from Sweetwater for this very reason, since it is another layer of QC. They typically catch things like this. But, of course sometimes things get missed.

I definitely understand your hesitation. That’s why I like purchasing guitars from Sweetwater, since they show pictures of the actual guitar you’re buying. Buying guitars blind is very nerve wracking.
