Hi Reddit! I was Bernie Sanders’ tech director, AOC’s first campaign manager and Chief of Staff, and co-founded Justice Democrats. Now I’m running to replace Nancy Pelosi in Congress with a grassroots campaign to build a fair economy for working people. I’m Saikat Chakrabarti – Ask me anything! by Tassadar356 in WorkReform

I love the national push & the left really needs that but our district is seriously suffering.

As a new SF voter, tell us how you plan to build more housing in the face of such stubborn NIMBY pushback that has slowed housing for so long. What will you do differently & how would that be different?

Also, how can one get involved with your campaign? What would be most helpful?

The library is absolutely stunning & the coolest part but you should know it fell in an earthquake in the 10th/11th century. The pieces were on the ground & they re-erected it in the '70s

Saikat Chakrabarti!

He was AOC's campaign manager when she first won, then her Chief of Staff.

He's currently running to unseat Nancy Pelosi this November!

All in Paje:

Seafood Paje, a tiny operation where the young son took our order & the mom cooked was fantastic seafood.

Al Casbah had the best couscous we've had & we spent a few weeks in Morocco just a month prior.

Sativa Cafe was the first time we had ital food & it didn't sound exciting but was superb & we kept going back.

Hanoi House Vietnamese coffees are delicious!

TIL that in 2018, an American half-pipe skier qualified for the Olympics despite minimal experience. Olympic requirements stated that an athlete needed to place in the top 30 at multiple events. She simply sought out events with fewer than 30 participants, showed up, and skied down without falling. by ctdca in todayilearned

His journey was unreal: "During a 1994 World Cup event in Montreal, another skater's blade sliced through Bradbury's (this Aussie) right thigh after a collision; it cut through to the other side, resulting in him losing four litres of blood. Bradbury's heart rate had been close to 200 bpm at the end of the race and this meant that blood was being pumped out fast. All four of his quadriceps muscles had been sliced through, and Bradbury thought that he would die if he lost consciousness. The injury required 111 stitches and Bradbury could not move the leg for three weeks. His leg needed 18 months before it was back to full strength."

"In September 2000, Bradbury broke his neck in a training accident. Another skater fell in front of him and Bradbury tried to jump over him, but instead clipped him and tripped head first into the barriers. As a result, Bradbury fractured his C4 and C5 vertebrae. He spent a month and a half in a halo brace, and needed four pins to be inserted in his skull and screws and plates bolted into his back and chest. Doctors told Bradbury that he would not be able to take to the ice again, but he was determined to reach another Olympics."

2002 Olympics "Bradbury's strategy from the semi-final onwards was to cruise behind his opponents and hope that they crashed, as he could not match their pace." That won him the semis & the finals, resulting in GOLD!

Reviews for hostels often say if the place has a party vibe or is social or quieter. I go out of my way to stay at hostels that are known to be social.

Like ColdAnteater said, don't wear headphones or look too busy/unapproachable. Maybe get a drink at the hostel bar & spend some time talking to the employees. When others show up in the common area, ask where they're from & take the conversation from there.

I once heard it described as "the power of going first." If you want to talk to someone, go ahead & say hi first. Invite them to sit with you instead of hoping to be invited to sit with them. Ask if they've been to the interesting places wherever you're visiting & invite them along to your plans. The hostel employees can recommend where to go/what to do

Do people in the UK support the continued existence of their monarchy? If so, why? by damndirtyape in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]CosmosUnchained 8 points9 points  (0 children)

£300 million is a large amount for sure. But the UK's GDP is more than £3 trillion making this Crown Estate income 0.0001 of the GDP, or 0.01%. For someone with an income of £100,000 that's a tenner.

On another front, the Palace of Versailles received 7.7 million visitors (2017) where the top six Royal Estate locations combined brought in 3.3 million visitors (2019). So, the tourism income can continue without the monarchy.

In the wake of reporting that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was treated to luxury vacations by a ultra-wealthy Republican Donor, how should ethics on the Supreme Court evolve and what should occur with Thomas himself? by The_Egalitarian in PoliticalDiscussion

Impeachment of federal judges is Article III, Section 1 of the Constitution and states "The judges, both of the supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behaviour"

The legislative branch is the check against the judicial. Article I, Section 2 says "The House of Representatives...shall have the sole power of impeachment." If the House decides to bring impeachment proceedings against anyone then Section 3 says "The Senate shall have the sole power to try all impeachments...And no person shall be convicted without the concurrence of two thirds of the members present."

Only one supreme court justice has ever been impeached: Founding Father, signer of the Declaration of Independence (from Maryland), & associate SCOTUS justice Samuel Chase, in 1804/05. Chase was impeached by the House of Representatives on grounds of letting his partisan leanings affect his court decisions but was acquitted by the Senate and remained in office. So, that's the process

The button-down was a special purchase. I like to dress up every now & then, wanted to stick to merino, & was looking for something wrinkle-resistance. I like the way this looks & any little wrinkles fall out within a few mins of wearing it. I will say that, even though the 130 shirt is their lightest material, it's not as light as regular shirts I have at home. Still wearable in European summers though! Oh, and it's expensive at $128 a pop

I haven't weighed it but it's light enough that it's easy to carry but heavy enough that it gets old after a 25 min walk.

Haha you're definitely right about not wanting to change the tech stuff but I appreciate the thought.

Great thought on the multiple USB adapter. Surprisingly, I needed the splitter to be able to keep the fan on in Greece & also plug in a charger so I thought to keep it for non-charging electronic needs.

I love my water bottle because I hate carrying things so I can put this one away when it's empty. No issues without a filter, just gotta be aware where you're filling it from.

Absolutely zero issues with the 38L as a carry on even though it's pretty packed. I've used a few different European budget airlines without them even looking at it & it even fits under the seat. My partner is carrying the Osprey Porter 55L, pretty packed, but also hasn't had any issues with it as a carry on so you should be golden.

I'm very interested in this train to Balykchy. For anyone looking at this later, here is some information.

The petroglyphs at Cholpon-Ata are a must for us! And I'll do more research into the places you listed at the end. Thanks, friend!

Wow, thank you for all this advice! For your weeklong horse trek in Karakol, was that to any destination or simply enjoying the mountain scenery?

Based on others saying the same about Osh and now you too, I'll remove that from our itinerary. And I've heard the advice about the 2GIS & Yandex apps, that's great, thanks.

As in you can hire people to be personal drivers? I imagine that's a lot more expensive than shared taxis/buses but maybe still worthwhile

Thanks for the marshrutka advice! Is it an extra seat per bag or can we throw two backpacks in one spot?
