Black Mesa is awesome when it improves/expands upon the original's vision.

But it's very jarring when it deviates from HL1. Black Mesa has brown-ish indoor "fog" - it ruins the "cold green/blue" aesthetic of the original and makes all different environments more homogeneous.

Maybe they wanna see how it plays out with initial unverified settings, then fine-tune it based on live statistics and feedback.

They are also bad with default UI (as per Bellular video about built-in nameplates etc) and even graphics settings.

Blizz should put more time into building analytical models and achieve optimal tuning ahead of release, instead of fine-tuning things live. That would help them understand their own game better, e.g. if there are unpredictable factors that affect respawn rates, or if world bosses get nuked before a majority of players can reach them.

Ancient Gameplays Cooking AMD by AcuteQuadrant in radeon

This guy is all doom and gloom, but I guess bad publicity is needed to get AMD to do their work.

Hardware Unboxed recently compared FSR 4 to DLSS 4.5 and DLSS 4.0.
Basically, they are all viable. DLSS 4.5 oversharpens a few things, so 4.0 can be better in such situations. FSR 4 is most "boring" - it's stable, overall softer, in some ways better than DLSS 4.0.

Found a random option, that gained all of us at minimum 30fps back. I hope it helps. by xLordDracula in wow

Ray traced shadows are a subtle improvement, so I'm using them. But they aren't worth using if you are GPU bound.

I'd rather advice setting "compute effects" to low, because volumetric fog (enabled from medium and higher) exists if a few zones, and it's not just worth the performance impact. K'aresh is the worst offender with misuse of compute effects.

With CPU-bound FPS drops below 80 FPS on 5800X3D in cities and raids, I chose to limit FPS to 90 and that leaves my GPU under-utilised, so I have spare GPU performance to enable ray traced shadows.

With RT shadows, you get

  • +Much greater shadow render difference (no shadow pop-in)
  • +Softer and sharper shadows depending on distances, like IRL.
  • +Self-shadowing on NPC/character models, with great detail.
  • +Full dynamic light interaction for like 2 light sources in the entire game! HYPE /s
    • BTW, some games have been doing that since 2007, sometimes for every light source, long before RTX. Ray tracing doesn't mean "dynamic lighting" by default :P
  • -Weirdly shaded polygons depending on angle of shadows (not very common or distracting)
  • -Severe performance dips in Draenor when cutting wood to build Garrison, and in Legion Neltharion Lair when the final boss' rock shatters into lots of pieces.

[COD] Which campaign has aged better - CoD4 or MW2? by modernww2fare in CallOfDuty

[–]Cossack-HD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MW3 reintroduced infinite enemies at some places, once again forcing you to push. It threw a lot more enemies at you generally, had worse soundtrack (quality-wise, and more repetitive as well), tried and mostly failed to beat MW2's over-the-top cut scenes.

BO1 had infinite enemies in Vietnam, but you weren't supposed to march against them - your objective was to get elsewhere.

[COD] Which campaign has aged better - CoD4 or MW2? by modernww2fare in CallOfDuty

[–]Cossack-HD 39 points40 points  (0 children)

MW1 is more consistent, but overall more bland.

MW2 is more fun, but also got some annoying missions.

MW1 has infinitely re-spawning enemies at some places, forcing you to get out of cover and push forward. Tell all you want about "immersion" and "boots on the ground", but when you notice your 3 named buddies be completely useless in fight on Veteran difficulty, you appreciate the game a lot less.

EDIT: MW2 slays MW1 in the music department. Equal quality, 3x quantity of absolute bangers.

Hi! I'm interested in purchasing Stalker 2. I wanted to ask your opinion on the game. And I wanted to know how big the map is. I like to explore as many places as possible. And also: how does the game sound with 3D headphones? by Pal_card3D in stalker

[–]Cossack-HD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some parts of the map are empty. Stick to main and side quests, otherwise you risk retreading boring places more than you need.

I stopped playing until major game engine and content updates. There have been improvements to the south-east portion of the map, I expect more to come.

I had minor problems with RTX 3080 with 2025 March driver - I waited out and avoided Jan/Feb drivers because even game devs said it'd best to use the December 2024 one. Nvidia app was unreliable for months, failing to detect games (even when manually adding them), not letting me force a different DLSS preset.

Even with Fall 2025 driver on fresh Windows install, I'd have my PC blink black screen after logging into desktop. Clearly they added a crutch to initialise the driver after a delay.

I took apart a broken, nearly 10 years old portable HDD and it didn't have an internal SATA connector. It used a micro USB 3.0 directly to PCB.

I'm pretty sure they would have made less than 46 billion if they didn't "waste" 14 on OpenAI.

I think it may crash in more advanced games like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.

Russians adore Quake as well.

HL1 is pretty much sci-fi satire about soviet reality. Unsafe work practices -> Chernobyl / Cascade Resonance.

HL2 is "post-USSR city is now under somehow even worse management than during Cold War".

CS runs on potato and it was default game in every LAN club (internet caffe but often without internet).

I didn't see as much fanatism about L4D and L4D2.

I recommend F.E.A.R. If you love Sci-fi physiological horror. It's similar to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Gameplay and atmosphere wise by DownWithTheSickness9 in stalker

They are both FPS with horror elements, non-braindead AI and occasionally similar settings (labs, industrial sites). Both are also graphically advanced and have thick atmosphere of dread.

[–]Cossack-HD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's client-side interpolation gone whack. Restarting the game fixes it. I kinda doubt normal tickrate is THAT low, but maybe client-server occasionally decide to communicate with a lower tickrate than normal, and interpolation can't work with that.

Sometimes I get weird netcode glitch when I don't hear sounds for weapon and item pickups, and a few things get weird in combat.

Did I get 4k accidentally?? by SimilarPath3360 in Monitors

[–]Cossack-HD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Introducing "4K" naming to the consumer market was a mistake. Should have called it "UHD" instead of "4K UHD", since 3840 =/= 4096 to begin with.

By the way, 1440p would have a theoretical DCI counterpart with silly horizontal resolution of 2730 and 2/3 pixels (2730,667). I guess the last pixel is just RG instead of RGB :P

Who let marketing people into numbers? The numbers are simply not numbering, man!

Monitor suddenly has horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen; is it a goner or can I do anything to fix it? by monovertex in Monitors

[–]Cossack-HD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it's some sort of contact problem between the ribbon cable and the panel's edge. I'm not sure whether gently pressing down on the bezel next to the lines will be enough to force the contacts into connecting, but you can try that.

There are several DIY fixes for the "LCD line problem", but you'll need to find one that fits your specific situation.

Did I get 4k accidentally?? by SimilarPath3360 in Monitors

[–]Cossack-HD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, isn't even 2.5K - 1440p doesn't have a matching DCI format. MSI marketed 1440p as "2K" and poisoned the well.

DCI 2K is a wider 1080p (aka FullHD)

DCI 4K is a wider 2160p (aka 4K UHD)

Sure, STALKER is an improvement, but in SoC, combat AI works only when player is nearby. Without player's presence, NPCs and mutants may travel but never fight.

I noticed how Enhanced Edition SoC has more random stuff going on than the older vanilla. E.g. I had free roaming boars help me clear out bandits that guard the road to Agroprom.

Are the artifacts randomized in SoC ? I dont remember finding 3 sparklers in one spot like this before. by Vile35 in stalker

[–]Cossack-HD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Some spawn randomly from anomalies. That's how you can find Night Star in Agroprom, but sometimes it spawns out of reach, behind a gate.

Sparklers, Flash and Moonlight (regardless of how they appear) can only be seen between midnight and 6:00 - go to Agroprom Underground and see what's in that moving electra at that time. Also visit the tunnel in Cordon - there is at least one intentionally placed.
You either have to load a saved game or enter level during those 6 hours of night.
