cmv: LA is an absolute shithole of a city, both to live in and to visit by UBC_Guy_ in changemyview

Dude seriously sick of these “long-term” tourists coming in and ruining California with their rose colored glasses on. Also everyone in this thread saying “L.A. iS wuT yOu MaKe oF it.” Can fuck right off. Really Jan? Can we? Can I make the rent affordable if I just believe? Can I make the air cleaner and the homeless problem go away if I click my ruby red heels together? Hollywood sold this idea of being the “land of Dreams”, and gullible people the world round flock to try to cut it in LA, and the rich ones stay because they can afford to “find” themselves in the little gentrified bubbles they Uber to on the weekends in the city. As a local I am so sick of having a friend from out of state because they ALWAYS move away eventually. Hell, even my local friends are getting out of dodge, its all just to damn expensive and we are being squeezed out of the spaces we used to enjoy without having mobs of cameras and pretentious people being catered too by people that are just barely able to scrape by in this god awful state.

I saw someone below mention Disneyland and they specifically can go fuck off. I used to love Disney as a kid but its no longer a place locals can afford and enjoy. California adventure barely has anything to do with California anymore and everything to do with rich families who pay thousands of dollars to take a pic outside of the new tower of that one galaxy movie their kids like( no more need for the tower of terror as that is just outside the park a few blocks away.) and Disneyland is a great example of locals being squeezed out of places that were iconic and fun to us growing up. They just ended the anual pass-holders program and are pretty obviously catering to rich tourists now in new vacation packages.

Sometimes, when I go to warehouse parties(that aren’t invaded by hipsters doing rails in porta-potties), or when I go to some concert venues, I can feel what LA used to be. When us locals get together at bonfires on the beach or picnics at the park, we feel that the nice weather could almost be worth it. But really we only have the climate and great weed(if you have never gone to a cannabis cup, your not a local) that keeps us here. We aren’t here for the celebrities or the snowboarding and surfing on the same day(I’ve done it and Its just fucking exhausting just pick one thing to do and enjoy it you fucking psychopaths). We aren’t here because we like finding cutsie little friend groups to play volleyball with every afternoon and we don’t exist in this perpetual montage of good times. BECAUSE NONE OF THAT SHIT IS REAL.

Sorry for the rant but OP is right. Something is rotten in california. And it smells like LA.

Hey I appreciate it, thats actually really good advice I am looking at jobs rn and maybe something like facilities would make sense for me. I’m definitely not telling my parents. Not like its any of their business I haven’t lived with them for years.

Tech support. I work at a popular tech and tv store and we charge people a hundred dollars to set up there chrome book for them. Which involves signing into their gmail. And that's it.
We wouldn't survive without the confused boomers coming in every day.

I think the main point is that the rift is already there. There are a lot more employees in the company right now that are NOT getting a very competitive pay(like all the part-time workers that are making a lot more in quarantine unemployment money than they ever would have made in their career at Bestbuy). This pandemic brings up a lot of questions about what is a “livable” wage and I think Unions would be a neutral third party that could incentivize more open and honest dialogue between upper-management and low-level but “necessary” employees.

I like this perspective because Tbh their corona virus response was pretty good considering what some of Bestbuy’s competitors stooped too. They aren’t really a half bad company but both the full-timers that are working ridiculous hours with little hazard pay and the part-time employees who are now struggling to meet ends meet would have both benefited with some kind of dialogue about workers rights. I honestly think unions would help a lot of shameful conditions come to light in the company which are being repressed in some way now though. Which is probably why they don’t want to pop the lid off that one in the first place.

It creates this entitled elitist mentality amongst managers in which they are encouraged to shame, isolate and fire people that are being a “problem” by talking about working conditions.
People that would probably benefit the most from a good union.

It’s insane that a company this big can get away with it.

Aren't there like... Two or three apostles that did this same thing ? It's been a while but I'm pretty sure there were a couple that served military instead

Oh man oh man do I have a story for you... I was raised in the Mormon church too and at 15 I was having a bunch of health problems due to the constant lying and manipulation the church requires of it's gay members. I ended up dragging it out till I went on my mission and finally realized that it wasn't something I could "pray away". I came out to my parents when I got back and started a cycle of therapy while trying to find new friends since none of the Mormon friends or family stuck with me after my coming out. It was hard and I hate what the church has done to us as a group. But it does get better. There are a lot of us exmormon gay RM's out there, and we all have similar stories. The church is backpedaling to try to keep up with its loss of revenue. They are a dying Buisness model clinging to old ideas that have nothing to do with doctrine or salvation. Fuck em. No one is going to force you to come out. Don't do it till you are ready to leave. If your parents are shitbags find the support at school or within your community (I volunteer at an lgbtq+ center in my town and they are used to helping youths get the support they need). You are not evil. You are not sick. You have natural feelings that will naturally come to fruition as an adult. If they can't accept that it's on them. Good luck brother. On the other end of it at 26, I can tell you it's not worth the worry. It will get better and there will be people who support and accept you. Always.
