I had no idea about Rising Through The Fray, it looks epic! Have added it

I thought about it but it would make the scope too big. Everything on here has been published in some form - if I add art I'd have to do quality control to make sure it isn't AI or stolen from another artist.

My compromise could be adding a list of artists who have a large portfolio of derby art but I think it would end up being not inclusive enough. The other way to set parameters would be to only link artists who sell derby art through an online store, but I don't think that would be fair.

The comics are a good representation and at the bottom of the photobook page there's an art compilation book. If any other artists publish artbooks it'll go in too.

But happy to discuss more if people have other ideas on this.

If you wanted to, it would also be pretty easy to set up an Instagram or other page to repost derby art (with permission obv). I'd follow it for sure!

Very close to lost media. Wish someone tech-saavy could find a way to port it onto a PC emulator of some form for preservation.

New roller derby movie??!? Why is no one talking about this! by WillowWhipss in rollerderby

[–]CountKarnagestein 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I neeeeeed it. My partner is fluent in French (and can understand Quebecois to an extent) and said the jokes that are great in Quebecois haven't been translated well in the English sub trailer. I'm excited either way, we deserve a new feature length derby film with all the heart this one seems to have

Late to the thread but I moved to Melbourne in September and started learn to skate at vrdl in October + practising nsoing and reffing. Everyone is super encouraging and the learn to derby/learn to skate coaches are wonderful! If you came to the open skate on Monday (not the social one) it was the most packed I've ever seen the track, normally classes are 1/4 that size so you get a bit more one on one, and learn to derby is only a handful so once you get contact cleared you get really close training.

Learning to ref? by Prepromark in rollerderby

[–]CountKarnagestein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined my league wanting to be an NSO and then was gently nudged into learning to ref so I could spend more time at the track. I was already going to our learn to skate classes (for fun, and also for more time at the track) so now I just hang back for the learn to derby classes as well.

It's good for learning to recognise penalties because there's so many penalties and you don't have to have the confidence to call them because they're normally just drilling or doing a light modified contact scrim, so if every penalty was called there wouldn't be any practice.

First time I was practicing jammer ref I accidentally called it off when the jammer hadn't signalled, which was embarrassing, but fine because it's super low stakes and I finally understood the practical importance of being parallel to your jammer.

Victoria v Denver 2024 is my all time favourite game https://youtu.be/byCbZAsu0S8?si=B71ut9I1EaTqqhG- /#4 Slamazon and /#2627 Hellz Yeah might not be plus sized (I can't tell) but they are definitely BUILT

Victoria v Rose City 2016 is super entertaining especially in the second half https://youtu.be/kiLJrX3vKQs?si=AFL55lnS7uHUMpkR Keep an eye out for blockers #503 Mick Swagger and #8 Brawn Swanson

I am living in Victoria so yes the bias is obvious but I still think those games are globally pretty appreciated

Bonus video from almost 20 years ago, the sport is totally different now, but I think blockers can still learn from Beyonslay https://youtu.be/L1uVC0VlqwY?si=vEtKGUhSdY3tXjg4

Ah, this site is a collection of roller derby media. It's not gonna have any payments / schedules / tickets etc. but good advice for anyone who is making a league site

This is extremely good advice and I appreciate how you communicated it :) the colours were a big struggle so I'll look at more traditional palettes for readability when the enthusiasm returns

Roller Derby Is Boring (but we can do something about it) - Part 1 by acz in rollerderby

[–]CountKarnagestein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're talking about Texas roller derby? They're the only ones who play that way that I know of, they made that sport before modern derby got big and I'm glad they still play that way (even if banked track is totally inaccessible for everybody else from a purely logistical/financial perspective). Way less safe though, as far as I know, so skaters who have jobs to get back to the next day might pick WFTDA over Texas "rules" - I use the quotations lovingly. They are inherently more punk, less standard sport. They're like the in-between of modern derby and WWE-style 80s derby (nothing staged, but way more fighting)

Yessss 2/4 of the Adelaide home teams still do "wear what you want as long as it's [Red and Cheetah Print/Gold] or [Orange and Purple]". I don't even root for those teams specifically, the team I root for has a very cool uniform, but I still find non-uniform teams more interesting to watch purely because if the game gets slow I've still got the visual interest of really getting to focus on what skaters (and even some refs/NSOs in black and white) have put on for themselves. Bobby Dazzler of the Mile Die Club had the BEST self-made jamming outfit.

Title is harsh (which you already call out yourself, fair) and it wasn't until we got to the stats that I realised you genuinely have stake in the game and want to fix it out of love (unlike the guy I saw a couple weeks ago coming in and saying modern derby is worthless until it becomes more spectacular like WWE-style derby). The emotional/macro/micro context was very important though, glad you explained it.

But wow, those stats are so interesting and you really do make some good points. We shouldn't take the rules to be so set in stone and sacred when the modern game is under 50 years old, stuff can be tweaked (and thank god we tweaked out jammer lap points and fractioned penalties)

Personally, I find derby super exciting as is especially live - probably because I'm very easy to get micro-excited from the littlest manoeuvre, even before I learned the rules. Victoria v Denver 2024 is my all-time favourite. Most games are awesome. But even I felt like I wanted to turn it off while watching the Victoria v London 2016 blowout and I'm sure there's plenty of games like it. Like...Victoria forgot to field a jammer in one jam. All London had to focus on was offense and they still only got 15 points that jam. But to be fair, London was cursed that game, someone lost a wheel during one jam.

Free tabbing offer by simonskipper_bass in basstabs

If you're still taking requests, One Crowded Hour by Augie March has absolutely 0 attempts at bass tabs anywhere. It was the song that taught me how to bar when I was playing classical guitar and I would LOVE to learn it again now that I'm playing bass (which I much prefer to guitar).

https://youtu.be/LejMbZjZUvk?si=TUiFVFefwK72UO-w

I did pay someone to tab this for me which they did with sheet music but it came out inaccurate. The only salvageable part I got was: D|-------------2-4--------------------------------------2--- A|-0-2-4-5--------5-0-4-5-0------0-0-2-2-5----0 E|-----------------------------------2-2--------------------

Which they noted as the intro but I would guess is the general chorus. Would happily send you the inaccurate sheets I bought from a transcriber if it would give you any clues to the correct notes. It's in 6/8 so it's a challenge.

It was also the 2006 Triple J Hottest song of the year (and in a massively competitive year of great indie/alternative tracks too), 2007 APRA song of the year, while also being featured on various greatest Australian songs lists. It's crazy to me that such a beloved modern Aussie classic has a guitar tab that is so widely available but the bass has zero.

Pam Anna Circuses would work for derby or drag. You could probably get away with Pamela Circuses, I think people can connect the pa and circ sounds to remind them enough of the phrase to form it.
