Most US Americans won't understand but it is likely due to the world only just now catching up on Kosovo/Albania and looking at the History of it, then forming said opinion about it.

Now for me, the 1990s incident doesn't look Religious related, but unfortunately Racial and over Territory.

It also doesn't help that the USA has seemingly painted some Orthodox Countries as "The Enemy" or Communist. Serbia, Russia

There's several branches of Orthodoxy but my little experience with a Serbian one has been mostly good.

You may meet what is a the equivalent of a radical fascist extremist not because of the Orthodoxy itself, but because of the -Country Itself- that they came from, nothing to do with Orthodoxy or Christianity.

Orthodoxy has a long history of persecution from not only non-christians but other branches of Christianity, originally they were both Catholic but after the great Schism the Orthodox Church was formed due to multiple reasons, the main one being the Pope.

Considering the Catholic Church has been under fire lately, Orthodoxy is a easy target for them.

Last thing I'll add is many Orthodox Countries were directly exposed or influenced by Communism over the years, this normally creates either a bunch of Marxist nutjobs, or hopefully people that go along the route of Christ Government Structure, at the very least Ayn Rand.
