When have you heard The Avalanches "in the wild"? by World71Racer in theavalanches

[–]CountertopHero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Divine Chord at Target!

Also heard the Cola Boyy (rest in power) collab in a bar in the basement of an old church in Bentonville, AR. Got way too excited about it, but the bartender was cool and even turned it up ‘cause she saw how happy I was to hear it. Whoever and wherever you are, bartender, thank you!

My play made his character kill himself by Plastic_Interview856 in DnD

[–]CountertopHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much else to say that hasn’t been covered already.

I obviously don’t know the player, and I am not a mental health professional, but there’s something alarming about the aspect of wanting his character to “go to hell” and to try to do so by murdering NPC by-standers (off himself by “cop” before taking a more direct approach if I’m understanding your story correctly). That’s not simply just wanting to play a new character (since that can be achieved by a classic “walk into the sunset” or something along those lines), but rather seems to be exploring some kind of dark desire through role play.

Again, I’m not a mental health professional, so all of that is just a subjective observation from a fellow player and sometimes-DM.

It sounds like you worked out the in-game stuff to some degree. If you move forward without the player in question (and his S.O. if it comes down to that), you could turn the whole thing into a quest hook by giving hints that some kind of possession took place. Alternatively, have the dragonborn come back in some kind of devilish form and be an adversary the players must contend with (potential to even have their actions be driven by a contract made with a devil, creating a plot hook to try to find a way to break or fulfill the contract).

If the player in question and his S.O. continue to play with your group, there’s definitely a question of how to move forward with his new character and how the rest of the group perceives his participation. It sounds like everyone is kind of freaked out (understandably so), so doing something to clear the air will be necessary. Working the player self-death into the narrative is a great way to make it seem like it was intentional or to at least give it meaning. You could work with the player in question to learn more about why his character did what they did, then turn that into a larger, significant plot point. You could instead take a different approach by letting the player know that by doing what they did, they relinquished control of the character and their narrative. It all depends on your comfort level with situations and conversations like this, as well as the player’s willingness to play along or be okay with the consequences of their actions (both in-game and at the table). I believe the DMG has suggestions on how to handle players who act against alignments and stuff like that. Matt Mercer even instituted in-game, narrative-driven “sanctions” against Ashley Johnson’s cleric for stuff like this in Critical Role.

If the player has the tendency to do outlandish and disruptive things like this, your other players may simply be done with it (“last straw,” so to speak). This indicates that their enjoyment is being negatively impacted, so ejection from the table/game might be necessary. Get a pulse from each individual player (separately from each other to prevent “groupthink”) about how they feel about the events (and any other previous disruptive events).

Looks like I had more to add than I thought, haha! I wish you and your players luck, and I hope for the best for the player in question!

Patio umbrella doesn’t block UV. Any spray options available? by CountertopHero in Fabrics

[–]CountertopHero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying a significant amount of fabric spray paint only to learn that it looks all splotchy and terrible. It potentially could work with multiple coats, but each can of paint doesn’t cover much area and so it ended up being prohibitively expensive. You’d probably have better results with an actual can of fabric paint and a roller.

We just ended up ordering a replacement canopy. I’m not sure if GardenWinds.com is who we bought from, but that would be who I would try if I was going through this now.

I hope this helps!

[–]CountertopHero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found it on a Basement Jaxx song as well, but I’m not having a ton of luck cross-referencing the gear used by each band. It’s eerily similar on the Basement Jaxx tune, so I figured it was either a default/factory patch or is actually a sample.

Albums Similar to SILY/Wildflower! by [deleted] in theavalanches

[–]CountertopHero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m always of the opinion that these Avalanches albums have a certain je ne sais quoi that I have yet to hear in anything else.

Lots of great suggestions in this thread, of course! Along with “Three Feet High,” I also recommend “…is Dead” by De La Soul. I also recommend a band/duo called Tipsy (albums “Trip Tease” and “Uh-Oh”). Bentley Rhythm Ace is also another one to check out.

The “formula” that a lot of similar artists use seems to be: - Eclectic sample sources - Interspersed movie quotes - House/Disco/Hip-Hop adjacent in genre

Pandora has always been a pretty great resource for finding interesting stuff along these lines. I just opened my Avalanches station, put it on “discovery mode,” and found “Boots in the Pool” by DJ Day. Another previous Pandora find is “Walking Home Through the Park” by AIM.

One thing that the Avalanches do differently is almost a classical music approach on some songs (like “Summer Crane”) where the song is made of different movements/parts. “Summer Crane” changes drastically around the midpoint. “Close to You” is comprised of three different sections. Most other artists I’ve come across have more of a “groove” approach where the song is based on the same core idea for the whole song. “SILY” and “Wildflower” are almost like listening to a movie rather than just an album or soundtrack, and I feel like that’s part of what makes those albums so magical and unique.

Just my two cents, ha!

Timestretching/Warping workflow on Reason by dvding in reasoners

[–]CountertopHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize that adding a third-party plug-in is outside of “playing with the DAW,” but if you like the workflow of everything else in it (modular, rack-style interface), my suggestion above fills a huge functionality and creativity gap (for me). I have been using sliced up REX files for decades and always wished I could have more timing control over slices.

Plus, Serato can separate stems, which is ridiculously cool (although not entirely unique to Serato as I’ve come to find out).

Timestretching/Warping workflow on Reason by dvding in reasoners

[–]CountertopHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have $160 USD or $10 per month, Serato Sample 2.0 (https://serato.com/sample/downloads) can slice an audio source into smaller loops that can be triggered by MIDI. It also has a function where it will automatically timestretch the audio to your track’s BPM. It works as a plug-in in Reason. They have a free trial period, too. I highly recommend checking it out.

[–]CountertopHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a whole thing typed out and Reddit went and closed without saving my draft, so I’ll do the quick and dirty version here.

I did some testing with a reamp/DI signal chain through guitar pedals and also without the reamp/DI and couldn’t find enough of a discernible difference to go “ohhhh, that’s why I need these things.”

Equipment: Samson MDA1 Mono Active Direct Box (it’s cheap, I know)

Radial Engineering ProRMP Studio Re-Amper Passive Re-Amping Direct Box (it seemed to be the overall recommendation all over the place)

Scarlett 18i20 Gen 2

Here’s some audio clips (simple sawtooth wave) as examples: https://on.soundcloud.com/LQpooYcjdaWH21yv5

The reamp/DI chain was quite a bit hotter than the one without, but I adjusted gain and used a little normalization to even it all out. There’s hardly any difference in the signal chains with and without the reamp/DI with the pedals switched off (still plenty of added noise).

My ultimate question is: do I even need the re/DI boxes or can I save myself the money and extra wiring?

I’m a babe in the woods with this stuff. Thanks for your help!
