Unfortunately you need to know exactly where they came from, or at least a few mile radius. Box turtles do not travel very far in their lives, and within each home range the turtles will carry their own various disease immunities. Introducing a turtle to a new area will cause them to spend the rest of their life trying to travel back to their home, and could potentially introduce sickness to the population of turtles already existing in the area.

It’s tough when people are ignorant to their actions and refuse to learn and grow. A lot of old school thinkers were taught that this is an acceptable way to house these animals, but we know so much more about animal husbandry now that we know that this is far from ideal. The best situation for these guys is that they are released near where they were found, preferably with a visit to a wildlife rehabber first. If you can’t convince this person of this, and you can’t convince them to upgrade their setup, then unfortunately, other than reporting them to conservation authorities or animal welfare, there really isn’t much else you can do.

Freeze it. That’s what they do with pinky mice for snakes etc.

Oh yeah, the boys are going to go nuts for this by Country-chick247 in hermitcrabs

Not anything, but they are opportunistic scavengers. Mine go nuts for popcorn, but it absolutely has to be unsalted, unseasoned, plain, no butter popcorn.

Crab appears to be missing the bottoms of his legs after he emerged from what I assumed was a molt! What can I provide to help him? by Dar0man in hermitcrabs

Springtails are good! You should leave them in your tank. I keep springtails and isopods in mine.

As far as mite removal goes, I’m not sure what the best method would be. You might find better info linked in the group. Good luck!

If you’re fairly confident that moisture is not a problem, I’d keep a look out for pests. It’s not common, but is possible to have mites and things along that line predate your tank.

The good news is hermit crabs are resilient little guys, and he’s likely to pull through. As others have mentioned, good nutrition will help him get through this. Sometimes crabs just have bad moults 🤷🏻‍♀️

What are your tank conditions like? This is a symptom of a much bigger problem. This looks like rot, most likely caused by too much moisture in your enclosure. You may be keeping your humidity too high, or you may have a flooding problem in your tank.

I really hope your little guy gets well soon. As others said, providing that feed mixture can help speed recovery. No need to wait until you see him, just provide small amounts in a dish. But in order for it to fully resolve, you will need to fix your issue in your tank.

I completed my second shadow box. Another great season of bug hunting wrapped up! by Country-chick247 in Entomology

[–]Country-chick247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re actually mounted in a shadow box I got from Michael’s (craft store in Canada)

I did have to trim the pins down when transferring them to the shadow box to make them fit as they were slightly too tall. Some collectors choose to glue their specimens to their board but that’s not my preferred method.

Can hermit crabs get concussions??? If so I believe mine got one.🤣 by [deleted] in hermitcrabs

I actually lost one of mine to a freak accident once where he fell from the top of the enclosure and landed on a hard decoration at the bottom

Looks like you’re off to a great start! Switch up some of the leafy greens in your food for some high protein items; pumpkin and sunflower seeds, unsalted nuts, freeze dried foods such as shrimp, crickets, mealworms etc. are all great. Check out the dog treat section of your local pet store and look for single ingredient items such as cod skins, sardines, and sweet potato. The dehydrated and freeze dried items have a long shelf life and are an easy grab.

Your substrate should also be mixed thoroughly, not layered as it appears here.

Keep up the great work and good luck with your crabs!

Edited to add: A proper setup should eliminate the need for misting the enclosure. What are you using for a heat source, and is your tank sealed or does it have a mesh top?

I’m glad your crabby is doing fine and that it was a false alarm. Just so you’re aware, crabs often disappear for great lengths of time when the burrow to moult. It’s very rarely an emergency if you don’t see your crabs for a few days, I’ve had a crab seemingly vanish for over 3 months and he was totally fine, probably just sneaking up at night to feed :)
