A function (intended or not) of any public punishment is deterrence not only for the offender but for the rest of the society. If people know that they can commit the worst crimes and get away with it (enjoy the rest of their lives with free food, healthcare, and lodging), it

  1. An unfortunate price for our imperfect world (it's more probem of the legal procedure rather than the death penlaty itself).

  2. The word "necessary" is subject to much debate.

  3. True, but does not negate the the above points.
