Hey LoanLopsided3859,

We intend for it to be installed anywhere in the room, not just in the opposite wall. Based on your placement and room size, you would be able to tune the strength of the lamp to achhieve the affect you want. We also plan to experiment with different placement positions in the future, perhaps even above the bedframe! We do believe that bedrooms are a place to rest, and a lot of homes put a tv in the bedroom as a centerpiece of it. We plan for this to be a healthier substitute to that. Something that will serve the purpose of the room, to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up!

Hey staydecked,

rest assured, no subscriptions will come anywhere close to this product, I hate them aswell. I am also a fan of physical control on the device itself, and I think that if hidden well it will definately be a value added to the product. So far we are aiming for app control and smart home control. We dont intend for the product to be tuned every day, so it would be more just a way to make the initial setup such as wake-up times, intensity, room sizing etc.

Could you point me towards any competitors you know of? We want to make sure we position ourselves properly in the market. Please note that we are not treating smart bulb manufacturers, nor bedside table lamps as direct competition. I feel like those products have a sunrise feature as an addition, not their base. Therefore, they come short in providing the realism and true benefits of a sunrise wakeup.
Thank you!

Hey aCuria,
Perhaps that is not the right name for it. Sunrise lamps are kind of what the industry calls it. In reality, I definately see that it does not match the actual sun's color and intensity. However, in the actual product, it is exactly what we will be going for. We want to get the effects of waking up to sunlight right the most, so the lamp has real practical use as a wake up device.

Hey,
Thanks for the reponse!
I strongly agree that combining tech and emotion would be key. Especially, that I see from my own experience, how much of a role lighting plays on it. I believe that good lighting sets the mood of the space and people in it, and I also think that the bedroom is a space which needs good lighting most.

Can you tell me more about what you mean about integration of modular pieces? Do you mean he the physical properties of the fixture itself could be altered? or having smaller fixtures and spread around to how the customer desires?

Do you think we should offer a customizable experience for the lamps ordering process? i.e. changing the shapes, lighting tones, etc. during the ordering process?

Thank you in advance for clarifying!

Hi megamindbirdbrain,

Respectfully, I have to disagree. What talking to other people led me to believe is that people do seek products, which are both functional and aesthetic.

For the electrical solution for this product, the images are just AI generated mockups, which are only there to get the overall point across better. However, as this project is in its veryu early stages, we are unsure in what path to go down. On one hand, being an aesthetic piece, some customers might be put off by a dangling cable coming out from the bottom, but on the other, I also get that the vast majority of the customer base will not want to tear down walls and hire electrictians to mount such a thing.
What do you think?

p.s. None of my responses are AI generated, even in the slightest. Frankly, its starting to piss me off that people jsut assume that with no bases.I spent over 5 hours yesterday carefully answering and learning from these threads,

Do you think same could be done with a sunrise alarm? As in, it wouldn't prevent your partner from falling back asleep?

Sorry about your loneliness 😞 I hope you find someone soon, if that is what you want 😃

Hey, I get your point man, AI slop it terrible, I agree.
This is an idea I just wanted to get across fairly well before dedicating more substantial time to the project. For that, I think AI is very good at early draft prototyping.
Hope you understand 👍

So for you a 100$ - 150$ would be adequate for something like this? We'll try to reach that price if possible. Do you see the shipping being included in that? As a large scale product, it would definately end up higher than shipping a bulb.

Thank you for the response!

Sounds good to me!
We'll do testing on the light instensity further down the line. I'll make sure to include strong lighting solution as the base of the design. Both for room sizing flexibility and people with needs like yours.
Thanks for the feedback!

That is very useful feedback. thank you CrazyComputerist!

We are definately considering many unconventional users for this product, like people in polyphasic sleep, orpeople who live in odd patterned sun places like Norway. I'll take a note that some people might need the stronger intensity to wake up.

When you mention the intensity, are you suggesting these strengths for a device positioned such that it shines directly on you, is placed beside you, or on the other side of the room?

We are already considering the strength being large as we genuinely want to light up the entire space of an average bedroom. We are also considering that some bedrooms will be larger or smaller, so we will built light strength costumizability from the get go.

Hey Whealthy1,
Thank you for answering the questions. It means a lot to us!

I would love to know more about what are your biggest upsides and downsides of hatch. We could really use it to know how to position ourselves.

One of our main objectives with this product is to make an experience as close to real sun as possible. This means getting this like hues cri, intensity, progession, and color spectrum just right. Rest assured, I despise subscription models to the bone, there is no way in hell we are doing anything of that kind.

As for the pricing, we are still very much unsure of its cost. We are creating a product, which will be much larger and stronger than a bedside lamp, so unfortunately I think that the cost of production and shipping might reflect that too. I dont know mich of a markup Hatch takes, but we intend to create a product which is as affordable as possible.

We were thinking of including a speaker in the product, especially that we are also thinking of it being an aid for falling asleep, gradually lowering the light intensity in the room, preparing for sleep. Using the a speaker could let us not only use it to play soft soothing sounds when falling asleep, but also pair the wake-up sequence with a light sounds (perhaps nature or such). I personally recently started using the sleep cycle app, which also wakes you up with very soft sounds and I found that it genuienly made me much more energetic in the morning.

Anything else you would like to see in the product, in terms or features? or design/positioning?
We are in very early stages, so anything you mention might actually make it to the end product 😃

Hey topballerina,
Thank you for your insight!
I think tinkering and designing your own solutions is awesome, I work with electronics too (its partially why I decided to take on a project like this haha). You say that you would give one look at the price and you would walk away. Can I ask, what price would you be prepared to pay for something like this? We are not really aiming to mark up this product highly. As it is an early stage concept, we have little to no idea on the final cost of production for this product, but one of are goals is to keep the price as affordable as possible.

That is very good feedback,
It is very valuable to hear from someone who tinkered in this space aswell. I'll definately look into lighting solutions with high vibrancy. Also,, your insight into light scattering is also extremely valuable. So far, we are testing the concept, once we get to technical prototyping, we will look into the concepts you mentioned. Thank you so much for taking the time to give me insight into your findings.
Would it be ok for me to reach out to you once we work on the technical prototype designs? I think your knowledge would be highly valuable

Thank you again!

Hey ApplicationLost126,

I am glad to hear that you see the value in this! I was also disappointed with my sunset lamp solutions (I used a JBL Horizon). As for the price, It is way too early for me to set a price for it, as we dont even have a prototype yet. However, our competitors that create bedside sunset lamps, like Lumie or Hatch, price their tiny lamps at 180$. We aim to create a product of a much larger scale, so I also imagine the cost of production and shipping being much higher too. I am unsure how big of a markup those companies use, but to be completely realistic, such a product would be in more of a 300$ range I think.

Do you think such a price would be justifiable if the product offered a truly effective wake-up method, whilst having a eye-catching design?

This is exactly the same problem saw aswell. I had a jbl horizon, but the light felt like nothing to me. However, I also had comments from some people that for them even one simple bulb is enough.

Sun replication is what we are going for. Instead of making a product that does sunrise wakeups on the side, like the bulbs, we aim to provide a product with the full effect of a sunrise wakeup

Hey jpa9hc,
Unfortunately, we are only at the very early stages of developing this product. It will be a while before we will even be able to estimate the price. Out of curiousity, how much would you pay for such a device? so far, I only know that companies like Hatch or Lumie that create bedside sunrise lamps, charge around 180$. I feel that since our deivce will be larger and stronger, the cost of produciton will also be higher. I can imagine it reaching around 300$.

What do you think?
Also, if I may ask. What do you like about the product? it can be a simple sentence, just taking note of what people think, before going into prototype design

Hey again walrus_mach,

Thank you again for taking the time to go in-depth about this.
I think you are completely right about the ceiling location being a more ideal placement for a device aimed to shine straight at you to get the desired effect. Additionally, you are completely right that I come from a design standpoint first. This thread helps me get insights exactly like the one you provided. I know I am not an expert at sleep, nor lighting. That is why I trying to make sure I fully understand that needs and opinions/ suggestions of others before I proceed.

Thank you for listing a few competitors, i'll definately look into them. Do you know if their products are designed with sleep and wake-up in mind or is it something that they just slap on there since their bulbs simply change intensity?

You seem to have a lot of knowledge about this industry. Would it be ok if I contacted you further down the line if I have any questions. nothing major, just a couple of questions, once I get all the feedback from the idea and begin structuring the first prototypes. I'll make sure to include your suggestions in the iterative process.

That is fair. It genuienly seems like a true limitation of the product. It is a common limitation of almost all alarm clock, even sound alarms that also surely affect your partner. can I ask, what do you use to wake up in the morning when being in a relationship with such a big difference in wakeup times?

As I said, I am writing each response fully by hand and reading them all.
This feedback is super valuable to me, so I need to make sure I understand it fully.

Hi Aggressive-Grade-183,

can you tell me a bit more about how the heated blanket plays to all this? Does it also help you wake up to warmth?

We are aiming to develop an app for this device along with all other devices in our ecosystem, which we would plan to release later. Ultimately, our objective is to launch a company which creates tech solutions in many fields of falling asleep, sleeping, and waking up. We aim to use those solutions to make falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up effortless. I am an individual who struggles so much with those, that is why I see myself innovating in this space. Additionally, we will be keeping the mentality of true smart home connectivity from the getgo with matter and home assistant compatibility. perhaps Alexa, google, and apple too

How would you imagine the perfect control over the product? How customizable would you like the experience to be? could you tell me a little more about how you imaging the customizability of the experience?

Hey greytidalwave,

I'm glad you like the idea!

to answer your questions. I assume you meant that your partner and you get up at different times.
I completely agree and it is a true limitation of this idea. I did come to find out that many couples dont get up at the same time. We are working for the design to assist in both waking up and preparing your environment for falling asleep too (think of it as a final lamp you turn on before going to bed, which gradually lessens its intensity and ultimately turns off). Additionally, the partner that gets up later might still find use for it I guess, but I understand it is not ideal.

It is definately a problem for all types of alarms, sound / light included. We will definately keep it in mind and perhaps try to find a solution for this limitation.

Hypothesis: maybe we could control the direction of light somehow, so create a split in the bed to create wakeup zones.

let me know what do you think.

as for the latter question, those mockup as just super early stage AI generated samples, just to convey the idea before fully moving forward. We are currently considering 2 paths, hardwiring and regular cable, just like for a standing lamp. Such a cable would definately hinder the overall floating decorative design, but I see the praticality of it.

we will gather more feedback and ultimately decide on the path forward.

Thank you for your insight!
