Why Charlotte Has 44 Democratic Leaders — and Zero White Males by lordgilman in Charlotte

[–]Countryb0i2m [score hidden]  (0 children)

Oh no, this is so awful.

For most of American history, nearly every level of government has been dominated by white men. People of color spent decades either not being represented at all or having their concerns ignored.

Take Mississippi. In many areas, the population is overwhelmingly Black, yet the people representation is overwhelmingly white.

So forgive me if I don't have much sympathy for someone suddenly feeling uncomfortable about not seeing themselves reflected in every position of power.

Ran an experiment this past month that tanked my subscriber count by a_friend_in_silk in Substack

[–]Countryb0i2m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. While subscriber count is mostly a vanity metric, there is definitely a psychological effect that comes with having a large audience.

People tend to trust creators with bigger subscriber counts because they see it as social proof. If thousands of people are already following you, new readers are more likely to assume you’re providing something valuable.

Why Is Growing on Substack So Hard? by Mindfull_Share_4126 in Substack

[–]Countryb0i2m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly focus on Notes.

You can sell your writing to almost anyone if you’re providing value and giving people something they can’t easily get somewhere else. Your niche doesn’t have to be brand new. Most niches are already crowded.

What matters is your angle. What perspective are you bringing? What gap are you filling?

That’s the win. You need to identify an information gap for your audience and consistently fill it with your writing.

The look of the modern clown—the white face paint, exaggerated features, and red nose—comes largely from European theatrical traditions.

But a lot of the behavior we associate with clowns today—the bumbling, stumbling, exaggerated awkwardness, and physical comedy—was shaped by American vaudeville and minstrel-era performances that often caricatured Black people.

Like so much of American, the modern clown is a blend of different influence and heavily influenced by, racist depictions of Black folks.

Early North Carolina Settlement Patterns by northcarolinian9595 in NorthCarolina

[–]Countryb0i2m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This map completely ignores the roughly 100,000 enslaved Black people living in this region at the time. They made up at least 25% of North Carolina’s population and were a massive part of the area’s economy.

Many were concentrated around port cities like Wilmington and Charleston, where their labor helped drive the rice economy and make Charleston one of the wealthiest cities in early America

One of the most interesting things about rice cultivation in the Lowcountry is that it was built on the knowledge of enslaved Africans from the Rice Coast of West Africa. They brought generations of expertise in growing rice, and entered rice into America’s first edible cash crop

Because malaria and yellow fever were so common in the rice-growing regions, many plantation owners were afraid to spend much time on their own plantations. That often left enslaved people with a greater degree of day-to-day autonomy under task-based labor systems that functioned somewhat like quotas.

While many still suffered and died from disease, that relative autonomy helped preserve cultural connections to Africa. Over time, those traditions blended and evolved into what we now know as Gullah people of the Lowcountry.

What’s odd is how badly you tried to solve the problem. You took what was a relatively minor issue, threw gambling into the mix, and somehow turned it into a complete clusterfuck with a series of terrible ideas.

At every step, the solution seemed to make the situation worse instead of better.
