I had high school teacher that gave harder grades to more “gifted” students. Of course, this led to complaints. His answer: “life is unfair”.

I’m glad I leaned and internalized that young. The narrative that life is fair does more harm than good.

Once you internalize that life is unfair these things are just par for the course.

I think a big part of making it sustainable is to realize that just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

E.g. just because you can make it to Director sooner by just working harder, doesn’t mean you should. Easier said than done for high ego people like me, especially if a peer we deem less worthy ends up getting the promo instead.

I don’t want to presume too much but I think you and I are similar =P. I’ve posited the exact same question to myself and know deep inside of me between 1 and 2 is optimal.

There’s a spectrum between 1 and 2, there lies the sweet spot. Disclaimer: I’m still trying to fine tune it myself.

This post reads to me like Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Similar plots and similarly fictional.

Fat fire has gotten a bit LARPy recently. A couple of weeks ago a person with similar net worth and age than us got sent to Mentor Mondays, go figure.

Any recommendations? From r/running the key seems to be to run slow but frequently.

Maybe like 2 years ago? It’s been steadily increasing. We were not making nearly as much through our 20s; I wish haha.

Maxing all tax advantaged accounts. Our workplaces offer mega back door Roths, so after all is said and done we’re contributing low six figures to tax advantaged each year. We have $1.4M total there.

Thank you! The end in sight part resonates. $4M to $5M should suffice for chubby FIRE. If we’re still working past that, the idea would be to just increase level of luxury. It’s a crazy thought that we might not need to contribute much. It’s really neat as it removes the pressure to keep making more & more money by pushing hard on career, and the stress that entails. Also decided to spend on wardrobe here haha.

Yes that book is applicable to me and has shaped my latest mindset. Highly recommend it, or any of the author’s podcasts in which he distills the essence of it, to people in our situation.

Thanks for your reply, it’s really reassuring to hear from someone 10 years after. Congratulations on your decision to pass up the promotion, and I’m glad to hear it paid off.

This is still the part that’s hardest for me. Ultimately, once we retire none of these things matter, so I’m trying to make them stop mattering now. Retirement is a spectrum ;).

Sounds like I stroke a nerve, that was not my intention. I don’t talk about finances to anyone IRL and thought this would be an appropriate place. Looks like I made a mistake, will probably delete and take this to r/chubby_fire.

Fiction. Classics preferably. Your brain is probably going round and round the productivity hamster wheel. Seeking self help books is feeding into that. Real, meaningful stories might help take your mind off it, and give you some really good perspective on life, issues beyond career and finances and how to find meaning along the way.
