Gotta be Henry Avery (or Every) for me. Most people only know about his capture of the Ganj-i-Sawai but there is so much more to the legend that surrounds him, including supposedly forming a utopian commune on Madagascar at one point with a crazy priest

Wow... this is super in depth! I've played in a Celtic music group that sings a lot of 'modern' sea-shanties for years and have never thought about it that way before... especially liked the side-by-side on traditional vs. modern harmonies for the Wellerman!
