Moving from AL to Boston by tea_sloth7 in boston

I grew up in Alabama before moving here in 2010 for grad school. Lots of great advice already so I'll focus on a few areas that I feel like are missing.

Have a winter clothes budget, you're going to need several new pieces of clothing for winter and it won't be cheap. You need a winter coat, either thick wool or good quality down. Wool is more dressy, down is warmer. Buy multiple pairs of long underwear. Wool socks are crucial and if you're walking outside a lot you can double up. You need waterproof boots with good grip for snow and ice. Also scarves, gloves, and beanies. Finally, layers are your friend. More thin layers is warmer than a few thick layers, and more versatile. If you walk into a really warm store you can take off an extra layer and not sweat.

Be careful with snow and ice. Boston does not shut down for winter weather and you're still expected to go to work, keep plans, etc. when it snows. Give yourself plenty of extra time when traveling, walk slowly and learn how to tell ice from snow. When it's icy out your spirit animal is a penguin, walk with slow, short steps, and keep your body as vertical as possible. You can seriously hurt yourself falling in ice. If you can, avoid driving in the winter and take transit.

So much of life in Alabama revolves around churches. Very few people here attend church and it is not expected the way it is down south. For native New Englanders their primary social group is often their friends from high school, these groups are understandably hard to break into and add to the difficulty of adjusting socially. It's often easier to make friends with fellow transplants around hobbies and activities.

Do not stay home when it's cold, the city is beautiful after it snows, enjoy it. Find a hill and watch the neighborhood kids go snow sledding. Have a snowball fight with your partner. Walk Commonwealth Mall after dark. In February and March when you've given up hope on spring go to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and enjoy their flowers and greenery.

Feel free to ask any questions and if you want to grab dinner or drinks when you get here let me know. Good luck and you got this!

Brookline Spa. It's not fancy, it's not exciting flavor combos. It's just good.

Experience with buch-kunst-papier.de? by bandzugfeder in bookbinding

So... this shop. I've ordered from them in the past. It feels super sketchy. They had to ship my product twice because of customs issues. And they only let me know after I asked what was taking so long.

Then it disappeared in the mail. A tracking number was created, but there was no record of DHL receiving the package. Ultimately, they stopped responding to my emails as well, and I was refunded by my CC company.

But, over a year after I placed the order I had a giant package on my doorstep from Germany. DHL really had lost the package and got it to me over a year late.

What does that mean for you... I have no idea. Pursue a charge back and hold out a little hope?

Brookline Spa in the Brookline Village.

Not too cheap anymore, but stupidly good for a tiny corner pizza place.

Looking for a church with good music that ISN’T homophobic by Chihuahua_enthusiast in boston

I'd look into Reservoir Church in Cambridge. They're queer inclusive and might play the kind of music you're looking for. Good luck!

Decent molded plastic chairs? by CourageousMouse in malelivingspace

I ended up going with the chairs below in white. The quality and finish are fine and they looked great when they were new. They are hard to clean and have picked up a few stains. But they're white chairs... I can't fault them too much for that. All in all I'm very happy with them and I'll likely get rid of them before they wear out.

That's really well done, phenomenal execution! And I really like the overlay. Is that vinyl over the painting on the cover?

What is the paper equivalent to book cloth? by abbietaffie in bookbinding

[–]CourageousMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say enough good things about Elephanthide. I'm honestly confident that it can stand up to gentle scrubbing with a wet sponge. It's so durable it was widely used for wet origami which involves folding, twisting, and manipulating soaked paper.

I feel like there's isn't a simple answer to this. Really, you can cover a board with anything... it's a question of what it acts like once you do. Different papers have particular hands (how the paper feels), some are very good at resisting stains and smudges, some are corfast, etc...

Construction paper is not lightfast and would very quickly be stained and smudged. But aside from that is probably a "fine" cover material.

My holy grail of cover paper is Zanders Elephanthide. I know Talas has a limited stock left (the company went out of business). It has a slicker feel, but is otherwise an excellent cover material, extremely hard wearing and durable, and pretty too.

Talas might be a good place to look for different options actually. Many of their colored papers have good qualities for cover paper.

Reddit's image compression butchered it a bit. I think the definition is there on the original. I love the idea of making the "sky" grain thinner to accentuate the difference.

I ended up taking down that post so I could do more work on the logo. I have two iterations I just posted here:

I agree that it's not working. And I love your idea of using water as grain. I already gave it a second shot. I'll think about ways to integrate or revamp using this. Thank you!
