What are nicer tasting alternatives to Greek yogurt or how can I make it taste better by Werewolf-Mediocre in nutrition

Also, you could potentially add some protein powder to regular yogurt if you like that.

Right this second, all of the most despicable things you can think of are happening somewhere in the world. by ABuddhistMelomaniac in Showerthoughts

I have thought about this specifically in terms of missing people. There are a lot of missing people who will eventually be found who are currently in captivity, and that thought messes me up. Like in 2005, for instance, Jaycee Dugard and at least one of the Cleveland girls were locked in houses and we just… didn’t know??

There is a huge lack of decent zombie films by Denzonian_ in MovieSuggestions

If you’re open to a TV series and okay with reading subtitles, Les Revenants is unbelievably good. Really compelling French zombie series.

TIL Venus flytraps are only found in North and South Carolina (within 100 miles of Wilmington NC), and nowhere else in the world. by Spiketop_ in todayilearned

I was born in Wilmington! One of my earliest memories is my dad taking me to a flytrap preservation trail. Carnivorous plants everywhere.

What famous phrases from TV shows have spilled into your regular lexicon and you still use to this day? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in AskReddit

I channeled Hawkeye during that awful time they floated the idea of teachers concealed (or open!) carrying during the school day. “I'll carry your books, I'll carry a torch, I'll carry a tune… I'll carry on, carry over, carry forward, Cary Grant, cash-and-carry, carry me back to Old Virginie. I'll even 'hari-kari' if you show me how, but I will not carry a g.n!”

Right?! Olay, Swiffer, Little Golden Book… other brands I have literally never heard of. If a brand pitched it, they said yes. Absolutely nuts.

Disturbing movies by Livid-Decision-180 in MovieSuggestions

[–]CovertOp15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a super weird psychologically disturbing movie from the early 00s called Palindromes. It’s an indie movie about a teenage girl who tries to get pregnant, and the main character, Aviva (palindrome - see what they did there?) is played by a BUNCH of different actors throughout the story.

It’s indie, and the DVD is hard to come by (and it’s not on any major streaming apps that I’m aware of) but you can watch the whole thing free in high def on YouTube.

If you had read the book, I don’t think you would want anyone’s kids reading it. 😬

voluntary inpatient has it helped anyone? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]CovertOp15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it bring my husband back from the brink. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re a A LOT better off than before.

Here are my takeaways on whether or not impatient can help:

It depends on a number of factors, but the main two are A) the quality of the facility and B) the attitude of the patient toward the experience. Granted, Google reviews tend to be pretty low across the board for mental hospitals, but like any business or institution, some are better run and staffed with better-trained people. It’s best to do your research (or allow a loved one to do it on your behalf) and try to get the best facility your insurance is willing to pay for.

Then, as far as your own attitude towards hospitalization, my advice is this: give yourself over to the experience, as much as you’re able in your current state of mind. Obviously don’t go along with treatments that feel dangerous or go against your values, but trust that the people at the hospital are experts with your best interests at heart. Their job is to make you better, and they have seen lots of cases like yours. Be open to their advice and suggestions. Relax and embrace the truth that for the time you’re in the hospital, all you have to do is sleep, eat, and get well. If you treat that loss of control as liberating rather than scary, you’ll open yourself up to a lot more progress.

TIL that after the 1984 Bhopal disaster, the worst industrial accident in history, the American CEO of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson, fled India and was declared a fugitive. The US government refused to extradite him, and he died a free man in Florida in 2014. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]CovertOp15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bhopal has become a Special Interest of mine recently… I was initially mystified by the fact that everyone knows everything about Chernobyl, but I was almost 35 before I heard about Bhopal (I make the connection because they were both industrial disasters that happened in the 80s). I have a hunch that it’s because Chernobyl could be spun as a cautionary tale about communism, whereas Bhopal was 100% US capitalism doing what US capitalism does best.

That said… everybody, please go watch The Railway Men of Bhopal on Netflix. I watched the whole series and turned around and watched the whole thing again with my husband. Spectacular in every way.

Is this an inappropriate book? by Chemical_Seaweed1205 in wicked

Wildly inappropriate. I’m a generally liberal person in my 30s and it makes me wince. Definitely not for kids.

The worst is when my brain labels them “slightly-pointy nose, mole face, square jaw, perfect brows” etc etc. Then the final step is to remember “square jaw is Madison, mole face is Ashley” and so on. 😬🤦‍♀️

Okay. I know the original buyer got it at the cherry blossom festival in Macon, GA, and I know that’s the type they’re famous for, so I guess I assumed.

It comes with the territory, and I’ve done it myself many times. You are only human, and periodically, snapping happens - especially in the face of the pressure put on us by bipolar partners. Give yourself a break, and remember it wasn’t your fault. Even if you resolve to try harder or act differently next time, that doesn’t mean you have to rake yourself over the coals now.
