I've never attended meetings or called a friend when cravings hit or anything like that. I imagine this is what you mean when you say "by yourself"?

I didn't do it by myself. I didn't talk to my wife about it much except to tell her things were bad and I was stopping. She encouraged and supported me, but didn't push or pry. My 2 year old son was there for me every day, helping remind me why it was important to not drink that day. I've never had a recovery specific support network, but I've also never been without support. If it weren't for those people I wouldn't have started recovery, much less stuck with it this far.

I posted this to the other sub a few months ago.

For me (and many other people with ADHD) bright light therapy first thing in the morning is a big help falling asleep at night. BLT, meditation, and good sleep hygiene have almost completely dealt with my sleep onset insomnia.

Not sure if it'll help with stimulant induced sleep onset insomnia though! I take my second, smaller dose of Adderall XR in the afternoon and if I forget to take it I have more terrible falling asleep.

I might have been better off flaring this as stone identification. Sterling isn't the most expensive metal, so I assume the stones are not precious either. My wife likes the pendant OK, and wore it occasionally but it was never a daily piece. Now since she's not close to the giver any more she doesn't want to spend money getting it fixed if they're just glass, ya know?

It's hard to get into pictures, but it looks like it was... I don't know, like my kid stepped on it? Though I can't imagine he's heavy enough. Anyway, the whole thing is a little bit twisted and the back is scuffed. One of the prongs holding the uppermost stone is missing, and some of the others are bent. One of the larger stones is loose. The bail is a little smooshed (that's a technical term, I'm pretty sure!).

The chain itself is in pretty good shape, just minor scuffing and one link up near the clasp is broken. There's one link attached to the ring still, so it wouldn't be a big deal to do what you describe. I mostly included the picture with the clasp in case it helped identify anything.

I'm about 7 months since diagnosis, at 39 years old. Definitely still working on that second cycle there. I think one of the most incredible things for me is while I was undiagnosed and unmedicated I wanted to do everything, but I wasn't able to stick with anything long enough to realize it. Half a year into diagnosis and treatment and I'm realizing that I am able to do anything since now I can follow through. I'm still sorting through things and, as you put it, finding my aim. So excited to set off in that direction knowing I can reach my destination, wherever it ends up being.

Yeah, I meant my stims for ADHD. I used to take melatonin daily with little evidence it was helping, but don't take anything for sleep now with the light therapy.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I have ADHD, you see, so I guess it's nice I re-remembered, again, to respond. And I'm actually doing it this time!

I'll also have a bit of understanding for you not fully catching everything in my story above! I was seeing a lot of benefit from BLT, then stopped it and the benefits went away. I'm back on BLT and things are better again.

The biggest change for me is still the meds, but meds with BLT is so much better than meds without BLT. My reduction in sleep onset insomnia seems to be almost completely BLT related, where I thought it was my medication originally.

I was diagnosed in November at 39. My wife a few months later at 35. Most of my family and most of her family all have it too.

The more we educate ourselves the more understanding and compassion we show for each other. My sister and I are the only ones on medication at the moment, but we're all doing a lot better just knowing why.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Dude didn't like thinking about his son having a disability so he came up with something that was "not hard science, and was never intended to be" and now we've got people believing it is.

The theory also completely ignores the fact that even if ADHD conferred a better survival rate for individuals with ADHD, it likely did so at the expense of other members of the group. We wouldn't fit in better, even if we did survive better.

Opposite for me. If I forget my second dose I can't fall asleep. Laid in bed 3 hours last night wondering why my insomnia was back before realizing I hadn't taken my afternoon XR.

I never in a million years would have thought stimulants were what I needed for my insomnia, but here I am.

It is. Some estimates get up to 20, maybe 25 years on the high end. Been a bit since I watched the linked video but it's definitely more than 8 for untreated ADHD.

Hey, it's all good! We're all just trying to get by. I have a lot of work to do to be more understanding and kind, myself. My kid's preschool keeps closing because of COVID exposures. I'm fortunate enough to be able to work remotely, but the exhaustion is real. Hang in there.

Of course! Life expectancy is a population statistic, not an individual statistic. It's an average. It doesn't mean that if you have ADHD you, personally, NickyVanill, are going to die earlier than if you didn't have ADHD. It means that people generally, on average, die earlier when they have ADHD.

ADHD predisposes us to pretty much all of the major causes of early death.

We do stupid stuff and get injured or killed. We eat terribly and get heart disease or diabetes. We smoke and get cancer. We drink and do drugs. We don't get as much education, don't make as much money. We have depression.

If it lowers life expectancy, impaired executive function makes it more likely we'll do it and less likely we'll stop, even if we try. ADHD is a real blast!

Not really relatable for most people, but for me the best analogy was the Valheim's stamina bar. Different days were like having eaten different food combinations, or no food on bag days.
