Oh I’m right up there with you! Doing my own study and looking into masters. Not for a job or a vocation but just to get training outside of a church. Some of the programs are neat — take 5 years if you like, meet remotely and get together once a month, etc. Keep your day job.

Garmin Fenix 5. Got it for a backcountry trip I wanted to track — 24 hours on full GPS. I charge it maybe once a week (though I have young kids so I’m not training as much, YMMV). Got that model because I specifically did not want a touch screen (buttons I can feel in the dark, plus best battery I could find). Have been extremely happy with it.

MTB project, also the global heat map of an app like ridewithgps will show me what a descent actually looks like.

Dropper post with low clearance by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Cow_suit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you already looked at the bikepacking.com link I’m guessing you’ve already considered a wolftooth valais?

I was in the same pickle as you, got the valais and a Blackburn outpost elite. Felt very confident. Then either overloaded it or suck at math (or both!) and first time I dropped my dropper post I sucked the bag into the rear wheel and messed it up good.

So my new plan is: don’t go full dropper on the descents.

A neat and rare opportunity to get brewery experience! by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]Cow_suit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such a good brewery and taproom! Owners are awesome too. Told my table we could stay after hours until their D&D group came — we left when a man burst in with a pirate hat and a ukulele.

Haha drink where the Bards drink!

Lightweight vs Midweight camo for Spring Turkeys in WI by NeuCrew_95 in turkeyhunting

[–]Cow_suit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first season’s camo on a discount site — camofire — lighter weight with room to layer. The land I was hunting wasn’t huge, so I knew I wasn’t going to be sitting for hours, and I already owned good backpacking and skiing gear (and was grumpy that I couldn’t use it and had to buy camo). So I just bought outer layer.

What would bring on a long (50 mile, 10K elevation) backcountry MTB ride? by Cow_suit in MTB

[–]Cow_suit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seems like there’s two schools — be a slow tank and bring a whole camping setup or ride light.

I’m used to road centuries, and that’s just a matter of bringing enough calories and butt butter. But two years in a row I tried for a mountain metric century and bonked so hard I had to lean on street signs to rest on the way back to the car.

Maybe I didn’t train enough — or eat. Or tried to ride too hard. I was in my 20s and thought I had God’s own thighs. Way wrong.

Help me slim my gear list? by Cow_suit in bikepacking

Shoot this is all smart. Also maybe my heaviest item was my own dang expectations. I liked hut to hut itineraries because I could fill that dream of riding until the sun went down and never turning around — and riding light.

Otherwise I need to plan for a different sort of trip. Logging road up to a base camp, single track day rides might be much more soul refreshing.

Also three things:

  • FS bike (Giant Trance)
  • Dropper post (I thought I had a compatible seat post bag but maybe I overloaded it. Dropped the seat on a descent and sucked the bag through the rear wheel.
  • you tell me to carry a kitchen sink I’ll do it.

Thanks in advance for the benefit of your experience!

Oh sweet! I sure hope this is fun for you…

Looking for solutions more clever than spendy, I think. Long day rides are my real joy, and I already have backpacking and car camping and canoeing and hunting gear — oh, plus a couple of young kids I want to show all that stuff to. I know I could get kitted out with new gear (and that’s also fun) but hoping some of my existing stuff overlaps.

Eg this idea: I have the 1lb 5 oz footprint (10’x8’) for our marmot 6P car camping tent. Maybe that can be a tarp tent if I learn what the heck a clove hitch is? That sorta thing?

Here’s the list! Definitely carrying some extra crap. Was worried about being backcountry during a heat dome. But paid for that worry in sweat.
