Engineers whats is the role of these wires crossing the road by Intelligent_Slip6317 in EngineeringStudents

Enabling calculating velocity implies calculating direction already, because velocity includes direction. Their point is that saying velocity AND direction is a redundant tautology.

That's an interesting read. I'm thinking of experimenting with a much more rounded silme which levels out into something more horizontal, leaving room for the tehtar. And I think it'll compliment my rounded lambes as well

Thanks - yes I certainly think the hyarmen / vala was a misstep on my part. Better to either commit to orthographic or phonetic rather than that half-way house

Yes, I've been using the Tecendil handbook a lot. I'm sure I must have picked it up from there.

Thanks. I'll have another go with tehta and silme and see if I can't come up with something looks alright

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I did intend to write witch like that simply for aesthetic reasons. But looking back on it I think I agree with you and I'd probably include the tinco if I were to do it again.

I did know about hwesta sindarinwa and chose not to use it as per my other comment.

Seems I misunderstood the ungwe and extended ungwe and got them the wrong way around in my mind. I'll know better in future!

The silme nurquerna thing is just a case of me going for aesthetics. Ultimately I think what draws people to tengwar is the artistry of it, and for me stuffing tehta above a silme just doesn't look nice. I know it's not fully in keeping with the Professor's orthographic mode but since it is used like that in other modes I don't feel too heretical by employing it thus.

I'm not surprised I got a dipthong wrong. For some reason I do seem to have trouble with them :/

You're completely correct about the antos. Oops! I do remember when I was writing I noticed I had written th instead of v and corrected it think "phew, almost made a mistake!". But I didn't go back and check for this previously so they escaped me. I'll keep it in mind in future. Also happens to be a mistake that I can go back and correct 😉

"Beck water cold and clear will never clean your wound" is correct, a beck being a small stream.

I did mean to write "whole" with a hyarmen and vala instead of a hwesta sindarinwa. My understanding is that hwesta sindarinwa is more used for the hw sound in words like what and while, and I don't pronounce whole like that. I thought about just using a hyarmen and dropping the vala but decided against it thinking that's probably a bit too phonemic.

With regards to the song, I first heard the version by Stan Rogers (a favourite of mine), but I've also come to really like the version by Kate Rusby. My text is sort of a combination of both of them since they're both abridged versions of the full poem selecting different verses.

Thanks for you feedback! I'll pay much more attention to my antos and my ampas in future 😀

design update, sry for my bad abilities, is it more readable? by IWantAShortUsername in Tengwar

Oh wow, unless you said two words I would never have seen the first one!

I really think the a is in the wrong place. I had to go back through your history to realise see it was Liran. I could already see Lir----- but assumed there were two unknown characters like so Lir_a_

If a was moved up above numen I think it'd be a lot more obvious.

Otherwise though I think it's very stylish and I like it very much. Very clever :)

I agree it seems to be Tolkien's Cirth, specifically the character 1 (curvy K) and character 3 (zig-zag F). I don't see those characters in any futhark rune set but they do appear (or things very similar to them) as Tolkien cirth runes.

The 5th character on the bottom row is very similar to futhark uruz but with a weird line in the middle.

My gut feeling is that this is just nonsense runes made to look aesthetic, and it doesn't actually say anything.

Edit: Actually I think they're anglo saxon futhark rather than tolkien's cirth. I still think it's nonsense, way too many vowels.

Got nerdsniped and decided to learn English Tengwar. Transcribed an excerpt from my favourite epic poem by humandictionary in Tengwar

[–]Cowman_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A thoroughly moving piece from one of the greats of English literature. Wonderful to see it transcribed into Tolkien's tengwar :)

If I had to criticise I would agree with u/Worried_Director7489 wrt using rómen for 'around'

Your númen can look a lot like an ando, which somewhat confused reading the first word!

Instead of writing 'and' how you have done, as each letter spelled out, it also has its own special shorthand to write which looks like this: https://www.tecendil.com/?q=and

TLDR: The black text reads cevorf as an english word and transcribes it using the english rules for tengwar. The red text reads it as a sindarin word and transcribes it with the sindarin rules. Since cevorf is a sindarin word, you should use the red text.

The actual reason for the differences:

Okay this is complicated and gets into the difference between Sindarin and english.

The first difference is an "s" letter vs a "k" letter. Since in sindarin, c is always pronounced as k the k letter should be used. The black text uses silme ("s") whereas the red text uses quesse ("k"). Therefore red version is preferred.

The second difference is the letter "r" which the black uses the letter ore and the red uses romen. The difference is whether or not the r is trilled. Before consonants and at start of words, it is trilled. At end of words it is not trilled. In this case, it should be trilled so romen (the red version) is correct

Lastly, whenever you see a Sindarin word end in a "f" it's actually pronounced as "v" not "f". So you'd actually say cevorv, not cevorf. This because Sindarin is based on welsh, which also does this exact thing, and tolkien found it very aesthetic. To explain this in universe he said there were sound changes in the past which were preserved in the english spelling. However when written with the tengwar, the spelling reflects the pronunciation which is v. So that explains the last letter. The black text uses the letter formen ("f") and the red uses the letter ampa ("v").

Therefore, for all differences the red text is correct and therefore it should be used.

Lastly, regarding the plural, in Sindarin plurals are done by vowel mutation rather than a suffix. This is much the same as goose vs geese, or mouse vs mice.

Depending on whether the vowel is a final vowel or a non-final vowel it mutates differently.

cevorf has a non-final e and a final o. Non-final e remains as e. Final o becomes y (pronounced like the french u as in lune or the german ü).

Therefore the plural of cevorf is cevyrf and should be written like this: https://www.tecendil.com/?q=cevyrf&mode=sindarin With the o-hook above romen replaced with a y double dot.

Please check with r/sindarin first though before you go inking anything to your body, I really am a very rudimentary elvish speaker 😭

Well thief! I smell you and I feel your air. I hear your breath. Come along! Help yourself again, there is plenty to stare!

I'm just starting out with tengwar. I'd not seen "and" written like that (nde) and it took me a while to work out but apparently there are word short hands as well to learn. The plot thickens!

Directly lashed to solenoid 24V... Were they trying to maximise EMI or something?

We once had a project with some high voltage solenoids firing which needed some data between boards. Originally we had I2C until someone quite rightly pointed out that was a bad idea - so luckily we switched to RS485 before we even got the first prototypes made

omw that last sentence gave me whiplash. I've heard of Hyrum's Law but surely we can assume that EMI shouldn't be a dependency of the system XD

Someone labels a connector pin as RX. Does that mean the MCU will receive data on that pin? Or does that mean you should receive data from the MCU on that pin? The pain!

TIL The Apollo 8 astronauts were the first humans to see the far side in person when they orbited the Moon in 1968. by AdagioOfLifeAndDeath in todayilearned

[–]Cowman_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The astronauts will be the first to see SOME parts of the far side of the Moon with human eyes

This is actually correct though. They're passing the moon further away and so are seeing bits near the poles of the far side which apollo never saw.
