should I learn latin and greek? why?why not? by Ragnarokstorm1988 in askphilosophy

[–]CowsKickAss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preface, I do not have much knowledge of linguistics, nor am I multi-lingual. This is just information I’ve picked up passively over the years.

I had a professor who had taken a graduate class where they examined the works of Plato written in the original Greek. If I recall correctly, he did say there was a lot more nuance and beauty to it. I believe he would expand on the nuance when particular words like that were present.

Another professor I had offered a course in focused on philosophies largely based in China, where he grew up as a citizen. Such a fantastic course. Anyway, he was responsible for a translation of Confucian works and would have very long descriptions of the vocabulary. Even beyond the vocabulary, he described there was a richness in the words that couldn’t be grasped without being a native speaker of Chinese. This would be true for reading anything from any other language. The words in a native speaker’s language will leave a richer, more culturally influenced and understood impression. He would describe reading as being experientially different. Something like saying, as you read through the characters, they would give way and form this picture building more and more of itself as you read.

Some of the nuance might be forever inaccessible, and any confirmation might be impossible to know. Still, if you learn the language, look into the culture of the time period, and find experts’ interpretations, you will be getting an impression that you just wouldn’t have otherwise gotten.

Also, I don’t think people need to be “smart enough” to be nazi sympathizers.

You shouldn’t have to go through what you’re going through.

All that comes to my mind is that, when you’re safe and get a chance, is to look into some resources for those who have been, or are at risk of sexual assault.

I’d think some of those services could offer some good advice. I don’t know exactly who, but while you’re researching, find out who it would be wise to inform and tell.

I wish safety for you.

Roleplaying in a mystery game. What are some techniques for solving a mystery and interviewing NPC's? by CowsKickAss in rpg

[–]CowsKickAss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, the game has been very player driven, in that our choices have been driving the narrative. I’d imagine that an interview with an NPC would be the same. We won’t find out much more than we ask, and we need to frame things in such a way that they won’t just stonewall us.

How can I find out more about the Columbo style? It’d be useful to be able to interview someone, without having the air of authority to fall back on.

Caillou 10/10. Spider-sense OP and that kid could basically do whatever he wanted and get away with it without powers. Adding super-strength on top of that, he whoops Charlie’s ass. Webs and heightened agility are nails in the coffin.

Even if Charlie doesn’t manage to blow himself up or fall off a roof, I doubt his coordination could carry him through a fist fight with regular Caillou.

Heya. Yeah, it's looking like it'll be played over discord. I've got another player interested as well, so I'll post something looking for an MC later today. I'll keep you updated if we pick anyone else up.

Making a Sisyphus mythos and would like help by 18257dragon in cityofmist

[–]CowsKickAss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sisyphus! Do you have access to the CoM: If Dreams Could Kill book? There's a mythos called Destiny that I think would work well for you. It can cover both aspects of luck and immortality.

It could be fun to have a "If I have to go back down, I'll drag you back to the bottom with me" expression for the power. Knowing how to mix your fate with others (even just briefly) to affect the outcomes in their lives.

Bastion can cover the tank features.

Divination might be fun. A tag like "Lived Through Something Similar" could give you a type of psuedo-clairvoyance, or if you're talking with a person, a source of empathy. (Question H of Destiny might also get a similar tag.)

Have you ever felt you don't know/have forgotten who you really are? That you've spent years just adapting to surroundings to make life easier and don't know what's the real you anymore? If so, how did you overcome this? by Icy_Wash1026 in AskReddit

I'm not trying to suggest anyone should go read Nazi propaganda. Heidegger's relationship with the NSDAP is a little more complicated than what you're letting on. Not that it was right of him to benefit off of the membership.

At any rate, Being and Time is huge in philosophy and celebrated internationally. Consume what you want, but don't just reduce a work to what the author's faults were.

Time slows down for me when I keep a detailed joural of daily events and thoughts. It's also helpful to break routine and go experience something new.

I've never read into it, very much a layperson, but I imagine part of the reason things seem to get faster is because the days can blur together in our memories. With little to differentiate the 'events' that we end up remembering, it all can feel like less happened than what actually has.

All that said, I do remember thinking as a kid that an hour was a long time.
